Nine, he hasn’t got a point at all. I am sure United spent loads more the last two seasons than Liverpool and they didn’t exactly challenge for the title did they. He needs to look in the mirror and sort his own issues out first. But true to form and like a broken rather tedious record he attempting his feeble mind games again.

26th July 2018 at 8:42 pm #24472But nine, you abd Jose forgot we sold our best player in Jan??? Everyone was saying couthino was our best player yet we sold him in Jan
We have to sell to buy for years. This season we hopefully wonβt sell our best players
He said we have to win the league lol. Thatβs crazy. City are the best team by far
Iβll agree now the excuses have to stop. We need to start challenging for the league and winning something but selling our so called best player meant we could buy some players. We also made big money from our cl run and the new stand brings in around 20m extra revenue a season
Itβs taken years of zero net spend to get here. Now we can spend because we are ran very well

26th July 2018 at 9:16 pm #24475Sean, Liverpool “need to start challenging for the league and winning something” is basically what Jose said bit of mind games imo.

26th July 2018 at 9:21 pm #24476Jim, like you I think it was mind games from Jose.
Liverpool are in a much better position than United have been under Jose and with the signings they’ve made imo they should be winning silverware this season at least one of the domestic Cups and they should be a credible challenger to City this season for the title.
I hope so anyway because to have two teams going for the title is to the betterment of the PL.

26th July 2018 at 9:39 pm #24478It amazes me that Jose still riles people. Even I’m bored of reading about his moaning now!
This season is one last roll of the dice for Jose at Utd. He took on an enormous rebuilding job and has so far come up short. For all the money spent by Utd in recent years, I still think we’ve only about the 4th or 5th best starting XI in the league so, purely based on that, I think he did very well to finish second last season.
If you get to a CL final and are most people’s pick as second best behind City last season, expectations rise and Liverpool are quite rightly under massive pressure to win something this coming season. Nobody cares how much or little they spent 3/4 years ago. If you go from what they achieved last season and spend as much as they have, the pressure is on. The bookies quite rightly have Liverpool as second favourites.
Liverpool have strengthened from being second best. City, too, arguably and will no doubt continue. Utd have really not done anything special in this window. Fred, I really don’t know enough about.

26th July 2018 at 10:01 pm #24483Sean, I’m sure Jose was aware of the Coutinho sale but it didn’t suit his agenda. I understand his concerns he’s struggling to keep up with City and now he might struggle to keep up with Liverpool too.

27th July 2018 at 7:39 am #24488AnonymousJose didn’t have much of a point no, as said above. Ya, take Utds previous windows and of course the matter of how we sell to buy.. yep all good.
The fact is, Jose is trying to set the excuses of finishing 3rd or lower. he talks about what we should win, well he’s spent Β£50m+ already this window and they are set for late spending, so how much closer to our figure will he get? I’d say he’ll easily break Β£120m. regardless though, Ed is right, expectations are there and I agree with them.
We’ve improved so much under Klopp and as we head into the 4th season of him in charge, the media will (and already are) build up those expectations. Klopp himself said that in 4 years at the club he’d expect to have won 1 title. The thing is, although I’ve no problem with that, I wouldn’t call for his head if we finish 2nd or 3rd. It’s a tough league and Man City are probably the best ever PL team.
I think with the progress that we made as last season went on, combined with our transfers this summer, Liverpool will challenge for the title.
Yes, luck will need to be involved and we’ve got so much ground to gain on City. Our transfers will have to work out really well for us to have a genuine chance and as said above, we’ll need luck with injuries.
I really believe that Klopp is the man who will bring us back to title winning ways. Will it be this season? I think we’ve got a really decent chance.

27th July 2018 at 8:09 am #24489Guys,
Anything can happen this seasonSo many surprises are always around the corner. Liverpool have spent huge money in the past and some nothing
Utd finished 2nd yet people are writing them off
No discussion about Chelsea either or spurs or even aresnal
Itβs going to be a storming season and Iβm
Looking forward to it nowUtd are going to spend more and so will chelsea
Not sure whatβs going on at spurs but they have kept everyone and usually spend late in the window

27th July 2018 at 8:33 am #24491Sean, Chelsea will do well to finish in the top 4 this season and that should be the major objective.
New Manager, completely different way of playing and etill massive uncertainty as to whether all of Courtois, Hazard, Willian , Morata and Kante will even be at the Club.
City still look to be the team to finish above and although I wouldn’t write United off Liverpool do look like City’s most likely challengers and the bookmakers odds refelect that.
Arsenal are in transition too with a new Manager and some unconvincing signings imo, top 4 would be an achievement for them. Spurs shoukd finish in the top 4 again but are still too thin squad wise to win the title imo.
Reality is that it’s going to take a very very good team to finish above City and Liverpool are a very good team and likeky to be the closest challenger to City and with limited injuries they’ve got a real chance but squad wise they still look a bit thin to me v City and that’s what just might cost them the title from City.
But I agree for all sorts of reasons it looks like being a really exciting PL Season and I hope from a PL perspective we don’t see City running away with it again and Liverpool really do mount a realistic title challenge.
Another season like last season and we’ll begin to look like the SPL and we don’t want that.?

27th July 2018 at 1:34 pm #24508AnonymousWARNING – LONG POST
i know everyone wants to talk up liverpool at the moment because thats what is fashionable but i just want to see how their squad compares with spurs (who finished above them last season) following liverpools recent signings. will give the players a mark out of 10 based on their recent form (and what i know about them if i havent seen much). feel free to completely disagree with me.
Keepers
Liverpool – Allison (6) Karius (5) – personally i had never heard of allison before he was linked with liverpool and thought he was pretty poor in the world cup. stated this on the 6th july when people thought the deal was dead.Spurs – Lloris (8) Vorm (5) – Lloris is still top class. Vorm worries me.
Spurs keepers win.
Right back
Liverpool – Alexander-Arnold (6) Clyne (6) – Alexander-arnold is more potential than finished product but looks decent so far. Never been a huge fan of clyne but happy to be proven wrong.Spurs – Trippier (6) Aurier (4) – Trippier had a briliant world cup, but there was a full season before that in which he was very average. Aurier – no comment.
Liverpool right backs win based on back up.
Left back
Liverpool – Robertson (7) Moreno (4) – Robertson was the surprise package last year i think. Proved to be an astute purchase and at 24, he will improve still. Moreno is shit.
Spurs – Davies (6) Rose (6) – Davies is just your bang average left back. does nothing great but makes few mistakes. dependable. Rose is definitely better than a 6 but needs to prove that. If he can get back to his best i’d be very happy. For now though a 6 he shall remain.
Spurs left backs win based on depth – just.
Centre backs
Liverpool – Van Dijk (8) Lovren (6) Klavan (5) Matip (6) – Van dijk has come in and really stabilised things at the back. HE improves who ever he is alongside. Lovren also has a big mistake in him and wouldnt trust him to lead the line without VVD next to him. Klavan just isnt very good. Matip has disappointed since he joined liverpool. Think he had a long injury though so will give benefit of the doubt.
Spurs – Vertonghen (8) Alderweireld (9) Sanchez (7) Foyth (5) – Vertonghen continues to improve all time and did a brilliant job in alderweirelds absence last season. Toby for me is the best centre back in the league. If him and poch can sort their issues out then it would be very beneficial for spurs. Sanchez is brilliant for a 21 year old but still has some mistakes in him which is to be expected. Foyth i dont know anything about. Barely seen him play.
Spurs centre backs win convincingly.
Centre midfield
Liverpool – keita (7) fabinho (7) oxlade-chamberlain (7) milner (7) lallana (7) henderson (7) wignaldum (7) – dont know a huge amount about the new boys. i know keita has a bit of a mean streak (5 red cards last season) but i’ve read god things. never seen him play though. fabinho i’ve seen a couple of times, never really stood out but seemed to do everything well without much fuss. dont need to say much about the others. all very decent, dependable players.Spurs – Dier (6) Wanyama (6) Dembele (7) Winks (6) – much less depth in the spurs middle. no creativity.
Liverpool midfield win easily.
Forwards
Comparing the forward players is a lot more difficult. Personally i think liverpool have the better attacking players and as a team they work together brilliantly. spurs players are more individuals and all capable of brilliance at any time. ideally i’d go with a mix of mane, salah, eriksen and kane. dont get me wrong firmino is great but kane is better. i’d say liverpool edge it though given the teamwork and bit more depth they currently possess with the addition of shaqiriSo i would say in the vital areas liverpool are better but with a few decent signings spurs will be with them. Defensively spurs are better i think but midfield and attack are crucial and liverpool have more depth and quality in those areas at the moment.
In summary yes liverpool probably will prove more of a threat than spurs but i dont think the gap is anywhere near what people are making out.

27th July 2018 at 1:43 pm #24509One to eleven Spurs are a very good team and can beat anyone their problem imo is that their squad isn’t quite deep enough. Sorting Toby out would be a step in the right direction.
I would describe Liverpool in the same way both Spurs and Liverpool will be City’s biggest challengers this Season but City still have the best team one to eleven and still have the strongest squad.

27th July 2018 at 2:43 pm #24512Agree with 27,Spurs lacks strength in depth, something Liverpool lacked last season. If all the major players remain fit for the entire season then Spurs can beat anyone on the day.

28th July 2018 at 1:40 pm #24566AnonymousNine, Jose also said this : βThatβs OK. But maybe this season finally you demand they win. Now you have to demand and say the team β with the investments you are making last season and you make now, that will probably be the record of the Premier League this season, a team that was a finalist in the Champions League β you have to say you are a big candidate, you have to win.β
That’s a world away from the “start challenging” stance. I don’t demand that Liverpool win the league and you’ll have to hire a PI to find a sane LFC fan who would demand it. To demand is to suggest that there are consequences for not delivering and Mourinho isn’t using this wording accidentally. Honestly, he should focus on what he himself can deliver because there absolutely will be consequences for him if he doesn’t improve.
