Agree with both of you guy Nine and CM.
I rate Henderson as he’s matured over the last few years. In fairness to him he does have that presence about him and a good decent pro. We have some good technical players, but we don’t really have a lot of characters or leaders.
Not sure why Henderson is on the brunt of the blame in England not really having an array of top quality since the ‘Golden Generation’ has trickled away. That’s a different talking point altogether.

4th March 2018 at 11:38 pm #17205PPT Winks Cork and Davies are all good shouts but sadly won’t get a look in with company yes man Southgate in charge. Also comparing Henderson and Fernandinho is frankly laughable or did I just miss a wind up moment?? Lalana offers much more than Henderson when it comes to reading the game and he isn’t great imho. If Klopp manages to buy a decent defensive midfielder and keeper Liverpool will be real challengers next season. Henderson isn’t good enough so let’s hope he stays. ? Jim

5th March 2018 at 12:25 am #17208AnonymousKlopp seems to really like Henderson, so I’m worried that we won’t try and improve on him. Keita coming in is likely a replacement for Can but we won’t know for sure until next season. If you look at our midfield options right now and pretend they were all fit and all in peak form, do you see anyone keeping Henderson out of the team? Wijnaldum is a Klopp signing and he sits on the bench when Henderson plays. Milner has been brilliant for us this season and he struggles to get into the team. Henderson often has to sit matches out but is it to protect him from his injury, or is it because Klopp is finally starting to think past him?
Right now I’d have the following setups before I’d include Henderson:
Lallana – Milner – Wijnaldum
or
Lallana – Can – OxladeI’m not saying he’s useless, the lad has skill but my biggest problem with him is that he’s captain. We need a real leader and someone of top notch quality to lead our team. I’m not sure Keita is the leader we’re looking for either. He has poor discipline.
In my mind we’ve got the rest of the season to work out who is able for the armband. I’d be looking over at Van Dijk and hoping that he is up to it but we haven’t seen enough of him yet.

5th March 2018 at 12:31 am #17209No Jim, Henderson has proven what he can do when you have brilliant attacking talent ahead of him i.e. 2014 and most recently under Klopp. They missed him against West Brom and Swansea recently. Funny enough Liverpools results picked up when Henderson came back in to the side against Huddersfield.
City have shown they do not really need Fernandinho considering their recent results without him. I can add the record of how many games City have won without De Bruyne has not started or played in this season in 90 minutes worth of football, but obviously do not want to come across as a wind up. ?

5th March 2018 at 6:39 am #17213CM. Your Argument would have some weight if you had seen City’s last couple of games without Ferna. But clearly you haven’t otherwise you would realise his replacement Gundogwan was put under no pressure what so ever by either Arsenal or Chelsea. Hes a good player but does not have the speed and ability to break up play like Fernandinho. Fernadiniho is the one position that City do not have a good no. 2. Ask any City fan and I am pretty sure the majority will tell you he’s the player we potentially miss the most. Just a shame he’s not English. Henderson may have improved the last season or two but hes still the weak link in my opinion and clearly many Liverpool fans aswell including some on this forum. Cheers Jim.

5th March 2018 at 8:46 am #17215AnonymousI’m hoping I dont split too many of your sides with my next comment… But Big Jim… England do have talented midfielders. But it’s about what you want in midfield and how you expect the team to play. Henderson shouldnt get near the england side.
Bare with me on this, but I would be looking at the likes of Jack Cork or a midfielder who has the capability of buzzing about a midfield.. Think of him as a poor man’s Verratti.
My ideal pairing would actually be Jack Wilshire and Nathan Chalobah… *People falling off chairs laughing hysterically*
Here’s why… Keep ball. Yesterday Arsenal played a horor game, the only player who came out of it with any credit was Jack. Not the player he was when he burst onto the scene, but I was mesmerised. His close control and distribution was first class, I didnt see him give the ball away from what I saw.
Chalobah is an industrially busy player. Only issue is he is not fit and out with a knee injury. He doesnt give the ball away and has a terrific range of passing and vision to go with the talent. Those two in the middle for england would offer creativity and bite. I’d possibly add a third to that mix, a more creative force… But the aim of our midfielders should be to retain, win and give the ball easily. Who too in the rest of the pitch tbc. But I honestly think there is talent for the midfield positions, it’s just who you pick. I get that the players mentioned will not be everyones pick, but if you want to retain the ball, you need players who have a bit of guile and technical ability. Those two have it, and would be interesting to hear your thoughts ladies and gents. I just think try something different than lumps who block channels.

5th March 2018 at 10:32 am #17221Jim-
I missed yesterdays game, but still stand by what I have said. Fernandinho has played 800 more minutes than Henderson, yet on average they both intercept the round about same according to Squawka. I am not saying Henderson is on par with Fernandinho, reason why I said Henderson is slightly inferior. But De Bruyne is one of the best all round midfielders the PL has seen, when he has not started or played, City have only won 1 game out of 6 in 90 minutes. Fernandinho I believe played in 3 of those. The difference between the 2 is Henderson has not had the luxury of playing alongside 2 of the current most creative players in the league in Silva and De Bruyne.
Liverpools most recent games against Swansea and West Brom, they lost them both without Henderson, yet they still had the likes of Salah. As soon as Henderson returns against Hudderfield, they are back to winning ways. Henderson is that link between defence and attack for Liverpool. Problem is, he is not flamboyant, so people do not notice what he offers.
People who believe Keita is the answer have not seen him play. He is box to box, covers a lot of ground, a bit like Dembele. If he replaces Henderson, then there will be a fair bit of gaps left for opposition teams to attack. Kampl and Demme have been Red Stars defensive midfield/deep lying players.

10th March 2018 at 7:45 pm #17669As soon as I saw Henderson was not in the starting 11, I genuinely thought United would have this. Henderson and Can are 2 different players. Can likes to drive forward, but his positioning in front of the back is off. Henderson does the simple things well and reads the game well. The first game Henderson is dropped, Liverpool do not look themselves. He is battery of the team, without him the team just do not tick.
