Agree fully with HH and Pax. I see awards like this or the Ballon as how much influence a player has had with their team having a successful season. Not the most skillful, most assists or goals or whatever, but overall influence in many aspects that HH has already mentioned. Its why I thought VvD should of won the Ballon last year over Messi. With Hendersons drive, leadership, off field actions and overall contribution he deservedly wins the writers POTY.

25th July 2020 at 10:50 am #134201Anonymous“Love it that Hendo won 100% deserved. Love it that it winds so many people up too. Not going to get into why I think he deserves it, think Hendo debates have been done to death now. ”
It doesn’t wind me up in the way that you think it does. I just feel that I know better and I’m right or I’m wrong.
Given the option, you and many others would apparently prefer to go without Van Dijk, instead of Henderson. The thing is, I don’t actually believe any of you.
I think if it came to the cold hard choice (in the hypothetical scenario), you would all abandon this silliness and rightfully admit that Van Dijk is absolutely vital to our chances of winning anything.
“I think Liverpool fans aside everyone should give Henderson a break heβs lead his side to an unbelievable season put in some tremendous displays and has proved himself an inspirational Captain.”
Give Hendo a break, from what? All the praise I’ve lavished him with? That’s it though, i have actually. I just don’t buy into this ridiculous over-compensation.
“I know KDB is a better footballer than Hendo, and so is Mane, VVD, Silva, and many others, but have they had as much influence on their team as Hendo?”
HH, I appreciate you restating your position, which I get but the answer to your question is still a resounding yes. Again (and I shouldnt have to qualify this but I clearly need to) henderson has improved markedly, he’s been an excellent model for the club and the sport in general. he’s a consummate professional and I now look forward to seeing him start or come off the bench, as he often has more to add than others… but if people really think Van Dijk hasn’t offered more then we need to see what this club is like without Van Dijk. Some day he’ll leave, or be over the hill and then all the appreciation will come out of the woodwork. Then he’ll be the reason we started winning things again, again.
This team couldn’t win a thing before Van Dijk and some others arrived, Hendo was there beforehand. Absolute silliness.

me too, I clapped him the most enthusiastically of all the players going up for their medals. Seriously, it struck me at the time and I thought of all you lads who think I hate him and what ye’d say if you knew… but you do now.
Nine asked that I ease off on Hendo and a few here are again taking it like Im attacking him but Im not. The thing is though, I have very little respect for this insanity and you lads know it. So, it’s like Im attacking you then. That’s how it feels.
So I’ll leave you lads to maintain your delusions. We can drop this hot topic and return to me talking about how good Wijnaldum is right?

25th July 2020 at 11:58 am #134220Liverpool turned from a top 4 side to champions of Europe, the World and England as soon as Van Dijk and Alisson came in. Van Dijk in particular pretty much turned around our defence single-handedly. If that isnβt influence, I donβt know what is. Henderson as I say undoubtedly has many admirable qualities. But they are not at the same level or order as what the other two have brought in. I think some have simply felt they had to reward Henderson because he is an English captain of a World, European & English league champion. And bear in mind the Football writers have never awarded Van Dijk their trophy in previous seasons. Thatβs just bizarre, particularly if influence is the key factor here.

25th July 2020 at 1:28 pm #134244Mak, “Nine asked that I ease off on Hendo”
That was never my intention mate what which is why I said “Liverpool fans aside” in my post as per the para below from my post.
“I think Liverpool fans aside everyone should give Henderson a break heβs lead his side to an unbelievable season put in some tremendous displays and has proved himself an inspirational Captain.”
All Liverpool fans on here have every right to air their views on their own players on here.
Hope that clears up the misunderstanding. Cheers 9’s

25th July 2020 at 1:49 pm #134254AnonymousMak – you arenβt wrong, that is literally the idea behind the award. It isnβt about being the best footballer, itβs about everything they do on and off the pitch. Itβs all part of the agenda When voting. Any award that is decided by a vote is a popularity contest.
If you were To take in to consideration everything on and off the pitch, who would you go for?

25th July 2020 at 2:02 pm #134259If thatβs so Paxton about behaviour off the pitch why did Vardy win the award after using a racial slur earlier in the season he won it? Also why did Suarez win the award after previously biting Ivanovic the season before?, of which he actually served a ban in the season he won it.

25th July 2020 at 2:48 pm #134270AnonymousI see Nine, I misread it! Even then I wasn’t offended, I just thought it was kinda in line with a lot of other things with regards to certain players. Anyway apologies, I should read a little closer π
Paxton, I think it’s great that some footballers are self-aware enough to know that they are incredibly lucky, well off and idolized. They can use their positions to give back, or help those that they feel.
How much of a factor are their off the field elements going to take up here though? There are plenty of footballers out there who give a lot of money and time to charities. I think Balotelli gave an awful lot, perhaps he should win this award?
I would vote for the player who I think has either been the outstanding best / had the most impact on results. I guess I don’t get this whole football thing.
That’s a screenshot of previous winners. Looks to me like they were largely the outstanding players of the season, on the pitch. Also, the first sentence about it in wikipedia states :
“… is an annual award given to the player who is adjudged to have been the best of the season in English football.”
Sterling won it last season, ahead of 2nd placed Van Dijk. i guess his off the field charitable donations and leadership qualities were just better than VVD?

25th July 2020 at 2:52 pm #134271AnonymousMikus, I was going to say it earlier, that there are elements of this “leadership and off the field activities etc etc” that are more like excuses. Looking at the list of winners, I see a load of top top players but I would say that most are not renowned for their leadership or off the field activities. TOP TOP level players, almost to a man.

25th July 2020 at 3:23 pm #134282Mak no worries mate I misread posts regularly.
My take on all this is whichever way you view it is it’s all a bit of a beauty contest and beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder hence the diverse views.
Deserved or not for Henderson and I get where you’re coming from there are very few Captains who have led their teams to the CL, European Super Cup,World Club Cup and the PL in a little over 12 months.
Its been a helluva a run.

25th July 2020 at 3:36 pm #134285AnonymousAbsolutely Nine but although van Dijk hasn’t got the armband, he’s lead that defence all the way there. Anyway I’m not arguing your point, was only a quick counter but Mikus already stated that above and in a better way, so I’ll stop there for now.

25th July 2020 at 4:38 pm #134303Hightown….no. it was my view of what they do, not just in awards, it has nothing to do with agreeing with me or not, what is important to them is the headline not the fact, that what i was trying to convey.

25th July 2020 at 4:40 pm #134304Mak, I also love it that you automatically think my comment was directed at you. It wasn’t.
No Henderson shouldn’t win the Ballon D’or, there isn’t one this year. Thought someone that knows better would of known that.
Mak fotball is all about opinions but you’ve gone off all aggressive again because a few of us disagree. Maybe you should pipe down a little and take a break?

25th July 2020 at 4:45 pm #134307Mak, you’re preaching to the converted mate.
I think Van Dijk, Alisson and perhaps to a lesser extent Fabiniho were the key to winning the CL and the PL.
