I see there is no thread dedicated to the legend retiring?! What a servant to the club and country! A player that served with such dedication and commitment rarely seen these days! Shame the likes of him,Rio,Gerrard,Lampard,Beckham,Owen,Scholes,Neville,Campbell,Cole,never got to win a major tournament.

Perhaps Terry,Rio,Gerrard,Lampard,Beckham,Owen,Scholes,Neville,Campbell,Cole,never got to win a major tournament… because they weren’t anywhere near as good as people like to keep saying?

That was Englands best side in decades and it was ruined by a incompetent manager who just wanted to make Gerrard and Lampard work. It probably would have worked if there was some balance in there. Rather than pick a 11 for a good system, they just picked the best 11. If England had Xavi, Iniesta, Busquet, Fabregas, Alonso as midield options, Sven would have tried to play most of them in his starting 11. We had Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Hargreaves and all 4 were playing in the side, when it should have been 3 at most. Scholes got shoved outwide, Hargreaves played various positions and Gerrard played in various different positions. Yet he stuck with 4-4-2.
