2nd February 2023 at 1:41 pm #203556By all accounts “we” had a chat with his agents in Jan, got the “not right now, top of the table and all that, we’ll chat again in the summer when he’s only got a year left” reply… (according to the cyber rags)

2nd February 2023 at 1:48 pm #203558Fair points lucky but my point is coukd Newcastle do what Chelsea are doing now if they wanted? Chelsea have a lot of players to sell but what if they don’t get the money back they think they will?
I k ow it’s not affecting fffp but I thought we would never see spending like this. Yes it’s spread over years but aren’t most transfer?
If utd and Liverpool got new owners in tomorrow…could they follow tgis process?
It doesn’t matter how long contracts/repayments take. Chelsea have now stolen a huge march on other teams as they have brought about 15 players in since the summer. Again absolutely FairPlay to them. They are not breaking rules but I’m just trying to understand that all tgis was supposed to stop. How can any club match what Chelsea are doing? It’s makes it more difficult to compete. It’s not very very fair play is it is my concern.
They haven’t sold any players yet but can bring 15 + in.

2nd February 2023 at 1:56 pm #203559Be interesting to see how it’s pans out lucky. I get what you are saying. It’s investing all at once.
It be difficult not to get exited as a chelsea fan but few summers ago they brought loads of players in and most of them flopped. Best signing was silva who was free. You just never know how it’s going to work out. Not sure if any of the summer aug ings have worked out either. Cucerlla, kouilbaly and sterling have being poor.
You just never know which way it work out and it’s a risk but it Is it xciting tines for Chelsea
I’m not sure about potter having as much say lucky. I think ted had a huge say in who they sign with direction from a few people. I think potter be gone soon to be honest but that’s just my opinion

2nd February 2023 at 1:59 pm #203560I really don’t see how they could stop teams from pulling a “Chelsea II”, can they? We know they’ve changed the rules already (so regardless of length it can only be a max of 5 years in the FFP “rules”), but the precedent has already been set.
Of course, maybe that’s behind the splurge, going nuts now knowing they would very likely force a rule change, and hope it works out for them (obviously “they” hope it works for them, I personally hope it all goes tits up! 🙂 ).
Could be a very brave/clever move in their part or they could end up with some egg on their face.

Sean, people often get this mixed up. Yes, transfer payments are very often spread over several years. Sometimes they are paid up front. It doesn’t matter one bit which of those you do with a transfer in regards of FFP. What is ALWAYS the case (however the terms of the payment are spread) is that from an accounting perspective, the entire fee is spread evenly over the length of the player’s contract. All Chelsea have done is said “Let’s give him an 8 Yr contract instead of 5/6 so it has less effect on our FFP outgoings”. So they may still actually pay, for example, the Mudryk fee over 3 years or instantly, even. It doesn’t matter. From an FFP standpoint, it’s the length of contract that matters. Hence why I don’t buy the loophole terminology. Every club has always known they can give 10yr contracts if they want. If that is seen as a loophole within boardrooms around the country, I would have huge concerns around the abilities of those concerned who are now moaning about this.

2nd February 2023 at 2:19 pm #203563Sean, when Newcastle were taken over Simon Jordan broke down how they could sound 500m and comply with FFP if they wanted too, but they chose a different approach.
It certainly is high risk and I hope we are not banking on top 4 this season.
“Yes it’s spread over years but aren’t most transfer?” – exactly mate, chelsea doing nothing new except extending contracts to reduce annual cost.
And you are right, most owners, especially venture capitalists, don’t invest this much so soon in football, it is a benefit almost exclusive to us. I understand why it’s seen as unfair just as Southampton fans would think its unfair thst pool can pay 80m for a VVD or a Nunez and they can’t. But, chelsea like every other club going forward will need annual expenditure to be within 70% of revenue and so will be playing with same rules as everyone else.
We just got lucky again with the timing of the forced sale relative to changes upcoming to governance of football clubs and the stipulation for investment Roman demanded.
FSG could have taken the same opportunity but didn’t, if that’s not fair I am not sure what to say about it or why I should care honestly.
It no coincidence my chosen name is lucky mate, I can’t believe the luck we have had as a club throughout my life and fully acknowledge it. Can’t believe it is continuing and if we get stung further down the line I can accept it.

2nd February 2023 at 2:26 pm #203564No doubt about it I’m jealous, who wouldn’t be ? What’s the score on Joao Felix HTF can you get a player like him on loan, is there an option or obligation to buy??

2nd February 2023 at 2:32 pm #203566Shiney, no one else would pay the loan fee we did mate, and there is no obligation to buy, if he does well we would only increase his market value should we want to buy him.
However, he has a really long contract with atletico so my feeling is if he does well we will pay for a 1 or 2 year loan with a option to buy.

2nd February 2023 at 2:36 pm #203568P.s shiney as to why they let him go, he not enjoying football under simeone and they not getting best out of him but are paying a lot of money in terms of transfer installments and wages.
It’s rumoured simeone is going in summer so this way they get chelsea to cover the outstanding liability on felix for rest of season and allow simeone to focus for last 6 months.
Whether we can loan him again or negotiate a transfer will largely depend on who the new manager is and whether he seems more value in building a team around felix or selling and rebuilding with the money received.

2nd February 2023 at 2:52 pm #203572“We just got lucky again with the timing of the forced sale relative to changes upcoming to governance of football clubs and the stipulation for investment Roman demanded.”
Spot on Lucky and Roman’s terms for the sale of the Club was £4.25 billion £2.5 billion of which went to the Government and the balance of £1.75m according to Roman’s requirement to be ring fenced for Transfers and Stadium development etc so the money for these transfers this season has been sitting ring fenced ready to spend.
So the money was there without any further investment from the owners and as you and the Ed has said there’s no loophole with FFP, contracts have always been spread over the length of the contract for FFP purposes and to do what Chelsea have done was open to every Club, only 2 players are on 8 year contracts and of course that doesn’t mean they will be on the same money for the length of that contract there will I’m sure be increases built in to the contracts based on performance etc over the period of the contract.

2nd February 2023 at 3:19 pm #203574I’m not moaning about it one bit Ed. I’m just trying to understand it as no other club did it. I just thought we wouldn’t see spending like this again that’s why I thought it was a bit unfair but the lads have explained it.
So other clubs had the options but they didn’t do it so that’s their fault. Now the guys have explained it fair enough.
Spending 100s of millions doesn’t always work out as shown over the years with many clubs. Be certainly interesting to see how it all pans out

2nd February 2023 at 3:26 pm #203575Can’t say I am not as equally nervous as I am excited Sean.
If it was down to me I wouldnt have the balls or intelligence to go this big so soon but I can only have faith they are mitigating for all circumstances accounting wise re FFP, its then down to how good our new players are and how good a team Potter can shape.

2nd February 2023 at 4:02 pm #203582Wasn’t meaning you were moaning Sean. I meant if any other clubs were moaning, which they seemingly were, hence the new 5yr can by Uefa.
