7th February 2020 at 2:24 pm #67965Sean, world class gets thrown around far too easily imo.
Maradona didn’t have a great time at Barca but he was a world class player as is Messi imo.
Maradona’s big plus over Messi as you touched on is that he won the World Cup whilst Messi hasn’t and isn’t likely to now but football is a team game and Argentina were clearly a better team in 1986. Cheers 9’s

7th February 2020 at 2:28 pm #67967Yet Ronaldo managed to play in four different European leagues. Ronaldo has also led his country to a major trophy. He’d also be an easier fit into teams because he’s more robust and athletic. Messi I think needs more of a setup to operate best in. In that sense, perhaps Messi is the better team player in a certain set up, but Ronaldo the better individual who can lift things more single-handedly.
Where exactly was Messi at Anfield last season?? I would have been more fearful of a Ronaldo in such circumstances.

7th February 2020 at 2:29 pm #67968That’s a good rumour doing the rounds Mak and Lallana on a free in the Summer would be a good signing for most Clubs.
It fits for both the player and Spurs where I think Jose might have to be clever in the transfer market in the Summer and Lallana hails from St Alban’s too.

7th February 2020 at 2:35 pm #67973Where were Barca as a team at Anfield last season Mikus criminal to throw away a three goal lead like that as it was v Roma the previous season. But I’m sure you’re not complaining about that and you can’t judge Messi’s career on the debacle at Anfield Liverpool had a bit of a say in that too.
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder Mikus, Ronaldo is perhaps a more dynamic player but I’ve seen few players with the level of natural ability as Messi who throughout his career has done ridiculous things with a football.

I brought this up somewhere else was told even by many Liverpool fans that Messi had an excellent game. Thanks for the incorrection lads 😀
Nine, Barca didn’t have the mentality to do anything except lose heavily that night. TBH, they shouldn’t have won the first game, never-mind by 3-0. They are not as good as people think they are Í’m much more worried about Atletico than I am of Barca.

7th February 2020 at 2:48 pm #67982No transfer fee, a fantastic commercial kick back, Chelsea’s young players learning from the Master even on £600k a week it would be a great investment by Chelsea over a couple of seasons.?
But I really can’t see Messi playing for anyone but Barca in that famous red and blue shirt u til he decides to go back to Argentina.

7th February 2020 at 2:53 pm #67984Barca clearly aren’t the team that they were Mak they wouldn’t have lost a 3 goal lead in consecutive seasons in the CL if they were.

7th February 2020 at 2:56 pm #67986Anonymouswhere was VVD in the first leg against Barca when Messi was tearing Liverpool a new one? using one game to beat Messi with is wrong.
also, Ronaldo didn’t lead Portugal to anything. he had a pretty poor tournament overall. Portugal were rubbish throughout but actually looked at their best after he went off in the final which I was lucky enough to go to and shamefully supported France but that was more hoping for a ridiculous party in the streets through the night which didn’t happen.
although this isn’t a Messi v Ronaldo debate. Messi for me is still the best in the world. if he wants to leave Barca then whoever gets him is very very lucky.

7th February 2020 at 3:01 pm #67988AnonymousShould Van Dijk saved the freekick? He did well enough against Barca away from what I recall. You’re right about Ronaldo though. He was carried in that tournament.

7th February 2020 at 3:01 pm #67991Waspy-Maradona was out of this world, but Messi is too,has been for nearly 15 years.Cannot see another players like Messi being born for a very long time.
CR7 does only one thing, scoring goals, which of course wins you games & trophies, but Messi tears teams to shreds.Shame that nobody can fight the nature and time.We all get old & have to retire._____________________________

7th February 2020 at 3:26 pm #68000No doubt Nine, but the real best players and managers can adapt to every circumstance and every league. If you look for example at Klopp, he may have a taken a year or two, but he’s adapted to the premier league by targeting more physical defenders like Van Dijk and he’s started pressing more intelligently rather than for the full 90 minutes. And the results are there for all to see. And it’s this adaptability that I think gives a lot more weight as an attribute. I agree Messi is probably the more talented out the two in terms of his boxes of tricks. And he may well have proved to be successful elsewhere. But it’s Ronaldo’s ability to be so widely successful and have such big game influence that I think gives a lot of weight to him, when weighing the two up.

7th February 2020 at 3:40 pm #68006Anonymousmak – fair point. should Messi have stopped TAA taking a quick corner? or stopped ter stegen letting one squirm underneath him? I just watched the highlights and Messi created three great chances for Coutinho, Suarez and alba. he wasn’t as bad as you’ve made out. he was still by far Barca’s best player, just didn’t have the support.

7th February 2020 at 4:51 pm #68025Mikus, If Messi is not one of the “real best players” then I’m a Dutchman.
I really don’t get why some want to try and downgrade the brilliance of one of the best players the world has seen if not the best and if we’re going to criticise a player for showing loyalty to his Club by not wanting to jump from one Club to another there’s something badly wrong.

7th February 2020 at 5:15 pm #68034AnonymousPaxton you’ve absolutely smashed the nail on the head there regards my point on Messi’s performance in that game.
He created chances but his work-rate through the match was poor. He’s the best player in the world, yet he didn’t work to influence the game properly. He had some decent moments but a match is about 90 minutes, especially when everything is at stake. especially when your team are starting to wilt.
“he wasn’t as bad as you’ve made out. he was still by far Barca’s best player”.
I guess it depends on who’s opinion you’re talking about because many think he had a brilliant game, which is absolutely untrue. Was he shocking? No, as I said he had good moments and you’re right, he was by far Barca’s best player but the rest of the team were dogshit. Well, if there was a good performance in there from anyone else, I can’t remember it anyway.
I think most people consider Messi the greatest player ever. On that night he was the 12th best player on the pitch. That’s all I’m saying.

7th February 2020 at 5:19 pm #680379, I’m not sure why they try to belittle his achievements either, it’s a bit unfair to say He never played in the premier league, why would he want to? Barcelona gave him everything a domestic club could, domestic league cups and titles, Champions League titles and shed loads of cash. The only way he’d have come to the premier league would have been if he’d developed an allergy to sunshine…..Pagan

7th February 2020 at 5:23 pm #68039AnonymousNine, you’re dramatizing things here a tad.
To question why Messi hasn’t gone somewhere else is not the same as criticizing him for it.
“I really don’t get why some want to try and downgrade the brilliance of one of the best players the world”
Are you suggesting that we not rate performances from match to match? Messi is great so we must say he’s always great, or else we’re impugning upon his majesty’s honour?
Can we drop the negativity a bit?
