As regards Werner, did a similar thing not happen with another German striker, Podolski at Arsenal? Was he not used on the left whereas he was better up top as a no.9? The modern manager seems to like their forward players to be both wingers and strikers all in one and be fluid players. If you try adapting some players to be like this, I think it struggles to work. Players like Salah and ManΓ© are more fluid players but they are rare and hard to find, so I think this is why other players try to be changed. I remember Aspas, a striker, coming to Liverpool and then being used as part of a front 3 and it didn’t work. He then went back to Spain I think and scored a hatful again. This problem seems to happen quite a few times.

10th January 2024 at 5:22 pm #211909A good question Ed, I am not sure how Klopp planned to use him.
I didn’t know enough about him before he made the move to Chelsea. I almost said that I had no idea that he had issues with finishing before he joined but I had read a few remarks about it but his stats were alright I think and the highlight videos showed someone who could score goals. I think I was happy enough with the idea that he might miss some, given the ones he was able to score.
Having seen him now, I guess my mindset on him is a bit different but Chelsea have a weird ability to get the worst out of some attacking players.
I wasn’t that wild on us paying what I felt was a lot for Salah, based on his failure at Chelsea but was I wrong there or what? Klopp also had to be convinced by Edwards BTW. Salah was not a Klopp signing. Good on him for being open to the idea that others might know better though.Klopp is obviously not the entire package but whatever people think about him, he does seem to find a way to get the best out of the vast majority of players. If people think back to his first 2 or so years here, I don’t think he was getting the best out of our defence and it was looking kinda bleak at one stage2 but then we signed Van Dijk, Alisson, Robertson, Fabinho etc and things were just clicking into place and there we had it, he was getting the best out of the defensive players too.
So, maybe he would have seen something in Werner that he could develop. You might find that Werner finds his shooting boots and actually is a proper 9. I guess the closest thing that I can think of to this is how Rafa pushed to sign Torres because he knew that he wasn’t just a talented player but could be lethal if he just started his runs in different places.
It’s been a long long time but Torres spoke about this once. I think Rafa had been telling him that he he started his runs a little further back that he would do a lot better and sure enough, Torres blew the PL away in his first season. We aren’;t talking Haaland or Salah’s first season numbers but they are freaks._____________________________

19th January 2024 at 9:27 am #212080How sully does henderson look. Absolutely laughable now. The absolute bullshit he has spoken since he went. This will all die down in a few years and he will always be remembered as our legendary captain but what bollix
He would have played this season. He sidnt want to fight for his place and he ran for the money. No way was it worth the damage done to his reputation. Its a real head scratcher
He had loads of money, the dollar isnt worth ruining your reputation. No will believe a word he says. Very disappointing as loved him as our captain.

19th January 2024 at 11:40 pm #212088Sean, what I don’t understand is that we have since been told that he was on Β£ 300-something K a week. I thought that 750k a week with very low taxes was definitely worth it and I said as much at the time but I don’t understand his move if that is “all” he was getting. He was on 220k a week here or so? If I’m wrong, I don’t think it will be by much.
I feel a bit foolish now because after he moved, he kept saying BS every time he spoke to the media. It was getting really awkward. I mean he needed to stop the nonsense and admit that he went for the money but it wasn’t much more than he was already on.
So, after all of this… He has now left after 6 months and is back in Europe…
I feel so foolish for sticking up for him, because he’s made a complete tool of himself and not only was his payday not what we thought, but he isn’t even going to stick around for it. He’s trashed his name and for no benefit._____________________________

20th January 2024 at 8:47 pm #212092Berrada as CEO is a big coup for us. I wonder if he is leaving City due to the 115 charges? It canβt be for football reasons!

21st January 2024 at 8:42 am #212093Looking at the job titles that he had at City, it’s safe to assume that he was heavily involved in their rule-breaking.

21st January 2024 at 9:05 am #212094So if the 115 win, we can expect to see YooUtd break the same rules? Inflated chicken noodle spondership, anyone?
Seriously, that is a weird one, the only thing I can think of is simply that the 115 are so far ahead now the chap fncies a new challenge.

21st January 2024 at 9:27 am #212095The corruption was coming from the ownership and people were playing ball, I’d imagine. If the Glazers don’t break the law then I doubt he will, I just wouldn’t want him at Liverpool.
Him bailing is potentially pretty telling though alright. I mean, it’s at least a red flag.

21st January 2024 at 10:16 am #212097It concerned me initially re the charges but the indications are that he is personally in the clear. I’m sure Utd have done their homework here. Going out and bringing in best in class appointments is something Utd have failed massively at in recent years and this, to me, suggests Ineos are taking a step in the right direction
π¨ BREAKING!!
Omar Berrada did NOT play any role in the sponsorship and salary deals that have led to Manchester City being charged with 115 alleged rule breaches by the Premier League! #MUFC [@TimesSport] pic.twitter.com/rTFb5cxPa4

22nd January 2024 at 12:45 pm #212127Looks like the Bone Saw Boyz could be heading into choppy waters… Trippier half packing, Joelinton out till April, Almarion going to Saudi… do they have any players left? Top 10 looks optimistic, let alone Euro footy next season… Howe out, Maureen in, over summer?
Of course, sounds like they don’t have a pot to piss in right now, so maybe Maureen won’t fancy it (or Conte!)… Potter anyone? Sounds like they need a manager who is both depserate and capable of building a side for relative peanuts…

22nd January 2024 at 3:52 pm #212128I can’t help but think Potter is waiting around for the call from Ineos in the event Ten Hag doesn’t sort this season out. He’s supposed to be pally with them from previous meetings about one of their other clubs. I hope I’m wrong though as I don’t think Potter is particularly great.
I think where Newcastle are as a club, he’d be a much better fit for them. Their signings so far suggest to me that Mourinho/Conte would not be the type of managers they’d be after. They have so far resisted the urge to bring in ageing superstars at the end of their careers for a bit of star quality, instead focusing on progressive signings for the future. A Conte/Mourinho appointment would be a shift away from that IMO.

24th January 2024 at 9:06 am #212135Don’t believe it for one second, Mak, just a slow day in the office wherever it started, and now all the usually useless cyber rags are “reporting” it with their own spin… Chinese Whispers at its finest.

26th January 2024 at 10:46 am #212159It’s the examples of Sky and like for like trying to spark a frenzy with rumours etc.
Whether there’s any foundation what so ever, I’ve personally accepted from LFC POV it’s not the end of the world if we don’t sign anybody. I’m really looking forward to Bajectic returning. The substantial amount of injuries we’ve endured you appreciate your ‘existing stock’.
I’d much rather we invest properly in the summer should we need to but strictly take on board the rules and ensuring the club don’t breach them.

1st February 2024 at 9:15 am #212408Last day and everybody seems to have short arms and deep pockets…
Any final wishes for the rest of the season?
Not sure where to strengthen, once we’ve got Sonny, Sarr and Bissouma back, I think we’re looking quite good for the run-in!!
Save the pot for the summer I reckon.

1st February 2024 at 12:19 pm #212410I won’t speak for my homies but I am pleased to see us not sign anyone this January.
I think a few games ago and pre-Klopp news, that might have been different but we appear to have stepped up a gear, Mac Allister is probably laying claim to the 6 role, with some amazing performances and Trent now has probably better backup for other RB role than any other team in the PL. Bradley is a revelation. I can’t believe he’s that good, I really can’t. It’s been a shock.Of course with Klopp leaving, the club have got to put whatever money and room for spending within FFP rules as they can. The new man coming in is going to want to bring in some of his own signings and the ones here are going to have to know that whilst Klopp might be leaving, that the ambition to win remains. So, a big signing or 2?
So ya, I guess this is me signing off of the January transfer thread by saying that I’m very confident in the team that we have. Whether it gets us there or not who knows but I think we’ll be close either way, injuries permitting.
