You’re right Sean this isn’t a brilliant BM team like we’ve had in the past. Not a great Dortmund either yet we could end up with an all German final! Although I think it will be Madrid vs PSG with all thr talk of Mbappe winning it against his new employers.

18th April 2024 at 11:39 am #213969If as expected Mbappe joins then Real with have a front line consisting of Vini Jr, Mbappe, Rodrygo and the much acclaimed Brazilian youngster Endrick. Coupled with what they already have in midfield with Bellingham, Tchouameni and Carmavinga they are developing some team that could dominate for years.

18th April 2024 at 12:16 pm #213970Haaland & Nunez have made City & Liverpool worse. Discuss.

18th April 2024 at 1:41 pm #213971I think you all know what I think of Nunez, but before Haaland kicked a ball for City I said he would make them worse. Maybe Sean can remember when I said he doesn’t get involved in build up play, not good at passing and not the best first touch.
Great goal scorer no denying but yes City would be a better team with an Aguero style player at peak Aguero level. Won’t score as many individual but who cares, its a team sport and the team would be better.

18th April 2024 at 3:09 pm #213973There were some great comments from Micheal Owen on a recent pod-cast I found myself nodding along too. He was saying something along the lines of footballers today is all about pace and power, running stronger and further than the opposition and many players from his era wouldn’t get a look in today…. I think Haaland and Nunez are a good reflection of that… they’re both very quick and very strong players, quicker and stronger than the vast majority of strikers from 10/15 years ago… but I don’t think many of us would struggle to think of quite a few strikers who were considerably better ballers than Haaland/Nunez.

18th April 2024 at 3:50 pm #213974Kylie -I would, because they are crap,a one -man team, and more importantly, would be fighting each other for every pen, corner, and free kick 😆😆😆😆

18th April 2024 at 5:36 pm #213975Nunez is frustrating in a sense that for his attributes, he’s missing chances you would expect him to score and doesn’t really show for any predatory instincts. He made me really happy against Newcastle and Forest ⚽️🙂

18th April 2024 at 5:41 pm #213976Can we include ‘ways of working’ and style? KDB credit to him and Odegaard 2 of effectively few plus Rodri with the nous to shoot from central outside the box and work the keeper. There’s a lot of dilly-dally, but also very few natural dribblers. Are the Manager’s telling the players to play in a certain way?

I reckon Rooney, Tevez, Torres, Aguero, Villa, Henry would have flourished in todays era. But 10-15 years ago teams played 4-4-2, you had 1 forward who scored the goals and another who held up play. Now the front 3 are expected to do the hold up play and score the goals and traditional wingers have been made redundant.
I wonder how wide players back then would do in today’s game playing 4-3-3 and as wide forwards. Players like Giggs would have benefited from it imo. Whilst I believe players like Salah would struggle playing in a midfield 4 back then.

18th April 2024 at 6:22 pm #213979CM… Top Draw players, like the ones you’ve listed, for sure, but all those little magical players, the Rebrov’s, Zola’s, Kinkladize, Le-Tessier, even the Sheringham type, you know what I mean, 5″8 or 5″9, couldn’t wrestle their way out a wet paper bag… most managers today would set ’em on the bench, play a 6″4 lump up top, and use as a superub as best when chasing a game.

18th April 2024 at 6:47 pm #213980Yes this is indeed a problem. I think Werner is also in the category of maybe being a good no.9 but someone who struggles to play in a front 3 system. I actually think Nunez is the opposite of that in that he has the power and pace to fit well into a front 3 but struggles to finish. Diaz I think is more of a traditional winger who can play quite well in a front 3 but will only bag the odd goal here and there.
Salah and Mane were unique in their ability to be both great wingers AND great goal scorers. But finding such players is difficult.

An interesting topic. I also believe refereeing has changed and influenced how the game is being played. Zola I could see flourishing in today’s era because he would most likely be more protected. Some challenges that were allowed back in the 90s, will be punished today.

18th April 2024 at 10:20 pm #213987Sean, I don’t feel despondent as I should except Jota really should start and we’ve just become predictable for opposing teams to set up against.
Clean sheet for the first time, and an Away win. We need to change it going into Fulham this Sat.

19th April 2024 at 7:29 am #213988CM… true, the little “wizards” might get a bit more protection, and certainly the “top-draw” ones will somehow make a mark, but I would think a lot of managers of the smaller teams in the Prem still wouldn’t take the gamble and would stick a “lump” up there instead…
Speaking of lumps, who’s that new lad at Palace? I was watching the Pool/Palace game thinking he was making almost everybody else on the pitch look like a school kid… what was he, 6″5/6″6 or something and built like an out-house..

19th April 2024 at 7:38 am #213989Peters is one thing but abuse towards Klopp on other platforms quite frankly is uncalled for. Yes he is in ‘closed down’ and our ideas seemed to have dried up but no doubt he will leave a legacy 💯⚽️🍾
