Tough game and the penultimate game prior to England’s World Cup starts.
Lose tonight and England will be embarrassingly relegated to Nations League B and realistically England will probably need all 6 points away to Italy and home to Germany to avoid relegation which currently looks more than a tad optimistic.

23rd September 2022 at 11:49 am #199191Is anybody really bothered, though?
Worst case, Engerland might have it slightly tougher to qualify for the next Euro’s, a comp that I believe has 32 teams in the “Finals”… do not think for one second Engerland will be in trouble qualifying for that!
Only two hopes for tonight… 1) Any Spuds players don’t get injured and B) No Spuds players embarress themselves… that’s it!!!

23rd September 2022 at 7:04 pm #199193England will huff and puff and Italy do what they usually do. My only interest is the City players come through without injury

23rd September 2022 at 10:21 pm #199194We were very poor tonight. One game before the WC and not looking good.

23rd September 2022 at 10:43 pm #199195Got back from the Pub/Snooker Club and even the Bar guys were fallen asleep lol.
Oh my god, such snooze-fest. Why is Southgate still our Manager?
More to the point, this League is such an insult; nobody cares. The facet in Presenters, Punditry is so dumbed down like we never seen or played football matches.
Mancini had us in his pocket from scratch because he knows what he’s doing. He won’t let England play the game they want to play which then just renders Southgate to be more cat and mouse and cautious.
Forget this nonsense; wasting so much time we’ll soon go off the entire sport at this rate.

23rd September 2022 at 10:45 pm #199196Adlab, of course we’re poor mate, because the truth is that when we come up and measure against better opposition, we get found out for what we are.
We’re boredom.

24th September 2022 at 7:07 am #199197Why select Maguire and Dier when you have younger and better centre halves available. Southgate never makes sense, he got lucky to make the Euro finals and that’s about the best it’s going to get while his in charge. No English manager has ever won the EPL so why put one in charge of the national team.

24th September 2022 at 8:19 am #199198Blueson, I am not English, but the argument you make regards never appointing an English manager is ridiculous. So only former prem league winners should be in contention yeah?
Daglish, wenger, fergie, mourinho, ancelotti, mancini, pellegrini, conte, klopp, pep. Oh and ranieri too. They are the only people qualified and none are English…is that your argument?
Don’t get wrong, I don’t think Southgate is a top manager but his has nothing to do with the fact he is English.

24th September 2022 at 8:26 am #199199Can’t remember the last time I saw Italy play and could only recognise a few names on team sheet. Usually recognise all of them and be able to say which club they play for too.

24th September 2022 at 8:47 am #199200“We were very poor tonight. One game before the WC and not looking good.”
The perfect summary from Adlab above realistically we were never going to win the World Cup but I was hopeful of progress in the competition but based on our current form and Southgate’s tactics that looks unlikely now.
I don’t understand the point of calling up Toney and then not even putting him on the bench or when we’re chasing the game only making 2 substitutions bring on Abraham play with 2 strikers and see what happens Southgate is too risk adverse.
I can’t see Southgate going past this World Cup we have enough good players to play better than we are.

24th September 2022 at 8:54 am #199201Nil, the Nations League replaces friendlies if there wasn’t a Nations League we would still be playing friendlies on the same dates.

24th September 2022 at 10:01 am #199202Nine, but what difference or value has it added? Very little people that I have come across show an interest. When England play in my eyes, it’s boredom. Unless a major tournament into the second phase at the very least, I personally can’t be bothered with this.
The players half the time don’t come across showing the same desire as they do when they play for their domestic team.
Had enough of this mate and I want the premier league back.

24th September 2022 at 10:03 am #199203Personally, I don’t particularly care who manages England, but someone with charisma and at least fire in his belly than Southgate exerts! Get this guy out! He’s had his chance!!!!!

24th September 2022 at 10:19 am #199204Selecting Toney and Chillwill then sending them back home again makes no sense. May as well not select those additional 5 players. By the way we rather have a competitive competition like this one than
meaningless friendlies, does actually make a reasonable good difference in interest._____________________________

24th September 2022 at 10:44 am #199206Didn’t realise that as well as Toney, Guehi, Henderson and Chilwell were all left behind. Down to a maximum squad of 23, hopefully Toney features v Germany.

24th September 2022 at 11:36 am #199207Only watched the first half, and to be honest, I didn’t think Engerland were that bad. They weren’t brilliant, and Italy weren’t exactly pulling up trees…
I think the problem I have (and I suspect many of you too, but I’m being polite today!) is we’re used to rough and tumble of Premiership football which is a bit more faster paced than international football which always seems to be a bit more like a chess match.

24th September 2022 at 12:04 pm #199208Nil, the Nations League was conceived as a step up from friendlies and it fulfills that objective imo.
Your only interest in international football is to watch England in a major tournament into the second phase but that can’t be achieved be it England or anyone else without there are games to prepare for that. Before the Nations League it was friendlies now it’s the Nations League.
International football existed even before the Football League did and it’s not going to go away and players want to play for their Countries and play in the World Cup. You need to come to terms with that.
Anyway look on the bright side the PL is back next week with Arsenal v Spurs and City v United both live on TV .😊

24th September 2022 at 7:58 pm #199210Nine, we clearly have different attitudes towards International Football and that’s cool, we can agree to disagree.
My whole sentiment and attitude in recent years has changed; I just can’t get excited about it the way I used to even though I have respect for our national teams as an identity representing the country.
Before, friendlies would be accommodated midweek and domestic football would resume. Now, it’s almost as if 2 weeks are needed.
What I am more mindful of is how much domestic football and time is at the cost of what we see in absenteeism. During Covid as well, it makes you feel more appreciative of what’s taken for granted, not to mental sport in general being missed affecting mental health for those essentially dependent.
That’s just my personal take above all mate. And yes, rightly so, I shall make the most of next week with it being my Saturday off 🙂
Cheers
