Is part of the problem here also not that sportswear technology generally is moving towards thinner and lighter materials to help athletes stay cool and light? Same with boots. And arenβt some trainers used by athletes now almost disposable. Alright if youβre a highly paid athlete given these things, not so much when everyone else want such things to last and endure many washes in the washing machine.

28th September 2019 at 8:42 pm #48743Mikus, I know someone who works in the development of the material used in sports shirts, the material used in the actual players shirts is different to the ones we buy, when they pitch new materials they include coefficient of friction through air…..Pagan

28th September 2019 at 9:00 pm #48744Pagan…interesting. I was going to say be an idea if the fan shirts be different to the players shirts so they last longer. Maybe they do – but then they are still quite thin.
As regards the coefficient of friction – I do wonder if some players have been asked to trim their hair to boost aerodynamics if weβre going down to such fine details!

28th September 2019 at 9:09 pm #48745Obviously some sports need different things, drag is more relevant to sprinting etc, at one time they were trying to develop a material that changed colour when stretched, the idea being based on shirt pulling….Pagan

28th September 2019 at 10:19 pm #48751Definitely on the point of Material, Boots et al Lightweight.
I wear for Goodness Sake, Lightweight Footwear for Work.
I am aware there are in the proximity, Shirts ‘Extra’ priced Β£85, that the actual players wear re my own. So my logic in nature is too basically squeeze more money from the Consumer.
The Joys Of Marketing.

29th September 2019 at 11:28 am #48777The three things that determine a fabrics performance are
1.The type of material used, e.g cotton, polyester etc
2 The type of structure employed (Mostly knitted these days but the type of knit and type of yarn crucial)
3. Type of finishWhat may right for one player may not be right for another.
Mostly hype from manufacturers for football use_____________________________

29th September 2019 at 11:35 am #48778Apparently, the one worn by actual players themselves, New Balance price this at Β£85. There is no way I’m shelling out all that even as a ‘collectors’ item.
I am largely in my work clothes these days to have any remote time in wearing anything else!

29th September 2019 at 12:43 pm #48785Very expensive Nil and footie shirts other than copies are just as costly over here. I think most people skimp it and get the copies these days off the back of trucks π

29th September 2019 at 2:23 pm #48789To be fair to the Club’s and the Sporting Goods Companies they produce two shirts the actual shirt worn by the players with all the technology in it which is very expensive and nobody really needs that technology and a shirt for the fans with out the technology which is about two thirds of the price.
As fans we can’t clamour for new signings from our Clubs and then complain about who produces the kits and how much they cost given the kind of money the Sporting Goods Companies pay the Club’s in sponsorship money that’s the price we have to pay.
Obviously child labour needs to be avoided at all costs but few of the Sporting Goods Companies are producing that much in their domestic factories. I bought a PRS Guitar recently which is one of the top USA Guitar brands but it was made in Korea and then shipped to the PRS US factory for a US factory check prior to shipping for sale the quality is still very high though.
In terms of China I’ve been there and dealt with their factories the workers come from all over China and are housed in basic dormitories with their food provided but paid a low wage most of which has to be sent back home to help their families.
In terms of the major Japanese Consumer Electronic brands who I’ve worked for very little of what gets shipped comes out of Japan they come out of off shore factories often in the far East although for political and excise purposes TV’s for instance come from European or UK based factories.
My personal gripe on replica kit is there shouldn’t be a need to change both the home and away shirts every season previously it was the home shirt changed in one season and the away shirt changed the next which seems a fairer way to treat the fans. But of course that doesn’t help the Sporting Goods Companies sell more shirts and justify the sponsorship money they pay.

29th September 2019 at 4:38 pm #48802Nine…I believe the sponsorship Roi comes from there forecasted sales generated outside the club remit. E.G Chevvy are not going to sell 75000 vehicles to Utd fans and not everyone will fly Etihad from City so they have to look at the larger market, which they will profit from if they have done there forecasting right, this is then not so much at the expense of the local fan
You are right about the Chinese factory workers but you also have to remember the Chinese labour market is surprisingly fluid, so much so, for good engineers to stay they have to offer Western level wages Up to my retirement I worked extensively in China, Korea,Malaysia, Thailand and Japan for 13 years so know something about daily working life. However, the main industries such as electronics, car mfg and textile production have a methodology to labour useage and as you say many do come from the “country” and do send money home. One of the good features in China I found was there was a responsibility to family. I hope that does not change in time for them
In general terms, China has been very smart, other countries were allowed to set up in China, in that period from the mid 80’s they have learned a lot, quicklyApologies to posters not interested in this, it does deviate a little from the subject but I think Nine and myself have tried to put things in perspective PLUS…it makes a change from VAR!!!!

29th September 2019 at 5:14 pm #48810Brian,I think you have to separate Kit sponsorship ie Adidas, Nike, New Balance and Puma etc which is about selling replica around the world as much as anything else from named sponsorship on shirts ie Chevy/Yokohama etc which is about brand awareness etc.
As a Marketing man I would never have proposed that because very few City fans would buy Chevy Cars and very few United fans would look to fly on Etihad.?

30th September 2019 at 1:57 am #48820Adding to my example of Man United, clubs generally over 2 decades ago allowed 2 proper seasons before changing their strip. Plus it was something to look forward to and it would save consumers money.
I’d credit Arsenal as another good example in lasting out their 2nd or 3rd jersey – the yellowy one with the JVC sponsor, early 90s. Plus they did this when they had the SEGA sponsorship and Fly Emirates. Rather than change it, they just carried over their 3rd strip.

30th September 2019 at 9:58 am #48830Nine…my grown up children often ask me to write my experiences down, I have tried but I am no writer and now memory begins to fade. As to China, I did catch some of the China TV but this was made, like most programmes, just for TV and misses a lot of real life.Maybe I will give it another go, most of my time in China was very good although my first visit in 88, I think, scared me because the plane then landed at a military base , as it was then, lots of armed guards and Mig fighters!!!! However, , this stay, the Chinese people were wonderful

30th September 2019 at 10:56 am #48837Brian, the documentary in question is a 3 parter (1 hour each) and follows chine only within the last 7 years since Ji Xing Ping took power, how china has moved forward, raised its people, tackled crime and terroorism, spent money in countries around the world and incrwased militarily adn basically how powerful as a nation the truly are in world terms now, it was a very interesting item to watch and i learned much, i would recomend and would also like to get your thoughts on this having lived and worked their and having a more rounded opinion maybe

30th September 2019 at 2:50 pm #48848I will catch up with the programme, as I said , I did see one of them. It has been extrodary growth. The young people in the factory’s i was working spoke good English, they learned from BBC World service not school!!! Of course, just like BBC they have now axed I think
The numbers re Chevolret/Etihad I was not really meaning City fans would not buy a Chevy or Utd fans would not fly with Etihad I only discounted them to view the wider global opportunityI think you will also find in to days China manufacturing they are moving more quickly to automation in a way we have not done
Back to shirts…after all our assumptions and points made the band wagon will still roll and we will see shirts for every opportunity. Apart from Blue, I also think Prestons colours look smart, once watched City play a home game in Prestons colours, minus the advertising!!!
