That was a bit weird, HK as MOM… but who would you have picked? I’m struggling…

18th November 2018 at 3:52 pm #28277The Spain match the other week, and that match today…I’m in danger of enjoying watching England again!

18th November 2018 at 3:54 pm #28278Think I would have had Rashford or Chilwell as m-o-m

18th November 2018 at 4:03 pm #28279So definitely Portugal and England in the finals. Other 2 places either Belgium or Switzerland and either Holland or France.
If we won it would that mean that 50+ years of hurt are over?

18th November 2018 at 4:04 pm #28280I think we were all a bit derisory about this new Nations League competition devised by UEFA by it’s been highly entertaining. Well done to England on getting to the Semi Finals in Portugal thoroughly deserved. Southgate has done A very good job since his appointment.

18th November 2018 at 4:13 pm #28281AnonymousEnjoyed that. Cracking finish and you can see the players wanted it. The tournament is doing what it set out to do.

18th November 2018 at 4:14 pm #28282Wow, whoever said this Nations League would be boring. Great game to watch and thoroughly deserved England win – should have been three up in the first 20 mins and thus game over.
HK only got MoM for assist and his goal but that’s not a criticism, his overall contribution, although not spectacular was still solid.
I may be a bit biased but a big shout for Delph, who had a very good first half. I think he’s a better option than both Dier and Henderson – quicker of thought and pass. You can really see the influence Pep has had on his overall game these last 18 months.
Also thought Stones did well – his reading of the game is excellent and never looks flustered._____________________________

18th November 2018 at 4:16 pm #28284AnonymousStones wasn’t that great for the Croatian goal though, couldn’t get close and ended up on his arse. Thought his passing was off today, too.

18th November 2018 at 4:32 pm #28285Gjblues – would agree about Delph. Thought he had a fine game. I’d play him alongside Henderson rather than Dier. Think Stones and Gomez look the part at the back so where does Maguire fit in, or doesn’t he? Would be tough on him after his summer but I do think Gomez and Stones should be first choice

18th November 2018 at 5:02 pm #28288Perhaps I watched a different game to you, Alfie 🙂 but can’t recall any misplaced passes at all from Stones. Not sure he was to blame to their goal – if anything Dier didn’t step up quick enough to block the effort, he just half turned his back.
Agree with you HH, they look very comfortable together. Re Maguire, he’ll fit into a back three, if GS elects to play that formation. Gives us plenty of options, which can only be a good thing._____________________________

18th November 2018 at 5:06 pm #28289Also HH, agree about Henderson instead of Dier (bit too slow), probably in a 3-4-3, where we need a bit more solidarity in the middle if we play with wing backs.

18th November 2018 at 5:33 pm #28290Brilliant finish to the game. I, too, though Delph had a good game. Against the big sides, I’d definitely have him in alongside Henderson. I’m not sure we need them both against smaller sides where someone like Alli or Lingard migt give us more going forward.
I really like the look of this front three with Sterling, Kane and Rashford. Rashford had one of those games today where he must just terrify defenders when he’s running at them. Sterling always a threat and Kane can never be written to nick a goal despite him being some way off top form.

19th November 2018 at 6:51 am #28293Anonymousgj – Stones was definitely at fault for the goal, he was the player marking the goal scorer, let him turn, couldn’t get close to him and ended up on his arse. Dier didn’t cover himself in glory either, but if Stones did his job he wouldn’t have had to.
Regarding the passing comment, I meant it was off in that it was always the easy ball. Sideways or backwards. A few times there was a man free further forward but Stones never attempted to find him and would turn and pass backwards instead.

19th November 2018 at 9:42 am #28296Hightown..think you are tight Stones/Gomez partnership looks good, early day but very promising. Rashford is a different player when he plays like this, I can only think he knows what he has to do with England and does it. Sterling will always miss chances but he does more than make up for that with his work and assist. This young team can only improve

England at all levels showing bags of promise. Bright future ahead I think. I think this next Euros is still a tad early but by the next World Cup, it wouldn’t surprise me if we enter as favourites with the players we have coming through.

20th November 2018 at 7:38 pm #28302Well a 5-1 win for the U21s which takes them to 22 games unbeaten. Is there a nation with better youth teams than England at the moment? I’m not sure there is. We’ve seen plenty of hopeful young players before but I think we have every reason to be hopeful for the next few years

21st November 2018 at 12:45 am #28303AnonymousI’m one of the few Liverpool supporters who rates Solanke.. TBH I think even Klopp has lost faith in him though. This won’t hurt but I doubt it’ll make a huge difference.
recently I considered posing the question on TT about bringing Solanke in , instead of Firmino but I thought better of it since I’d only have ended up 5 pages deep into a bitter and twisted argument with the usuals. I imagine that even the reasonable posters wouldn’t agree with that move but it’s something that is at least worth thinking about.
I remember before the season kicked off, I said I wanted to see Gomez at CB and that was generally disagreed with also. I’m not saying “hey look at me, I was right, they were wrong”… but more that these players can take a while to breakthrough. What convinces me about Solanke, is that he does a lot right , when Origi doesn’t. They are like opposites of eachother. Origi has the composure to score once everything has been done. Solanke does a lot right until that final moment and you can see the pressure gets to him. He had a few games at the end of last season where he looked like he was playing without a weight on his shoulders.
With Firmino playing so poorly, it’s worth starting to give Solanke time from the bench at least.

21st November 2018 at 3:33 pm #28311Must admit Mak, I don’t really agree with about Solanke. Admittedly, i haven’t seen anything of him this season, so I am basing my opinion simply on what I saw last season, and in that time I thought he looked completely out of his depth. We all know how difficult it is for young players to break through at the biggest clubs, and the worst thing that could happen to Solanke was Liverpool getting knocked out of the League Cup so early, thereby restricting his possibilities of gametime even more. And even to put him on the bench is a risk for me. Could you see Solanke coming up with a wonder goal like Sturridge did at Chelsea? When you are chasing City at the top, and Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal are not far behind you, there is little or no margin for error. I’d rather see Studge coming on with 15 minutes to go when we’re chasing a game, than Solanke.
It is also even more difficult for attacking players than defenders as their success or otherwise is more measurable, and one goal in 27 appearances last season, albeit most as a sub, are not the stats that demand inclusion. His, or Liverpool’s, biggest mistake in the summer was not sending him out on loan, though I guess uncertainty over Sturridge’s fitness dictated that. I think he should go on loan like Wilson has, and let’s see if he pulls up trees elsewhere. Even Foden at City, who everyone says is the best of his generation, is a long way from being in any City starting eleven, certainly in the big games.
