Chucky, I can’t see wages being a problem by expanding the squad to 30 considering the extra revenues a midweek Super League would bring in. But we’re all wildly speculating.?

23rd August 2019 at 11:47 am #46121But we’re all wildly speculating… nice and politely!! 🙂
Totally agree about the clubs being able to afford it, no issue there.
It’s chicken and the egg to me… 25 man squad for those extra games means the manager has more games time to play with to keep the players happy, more minutes to share around. But, get those extra players for those extra games and you’re back to square one, except now you have to keep 30 players happy (for example) and that will take a lot of effort, mixed in with those extra games to plan/train/play.
If I was a manager, I’d rather have the extra minutes to share around with the players I’ve got, than have to deal with even more pampered primadonnas.

23rd August 2019 at 12:11 pm #46122I really do think that managers would loathe the idea of such a big squad. One compromise that could be touted that may keep the managers and broadcasters happy (in the shorter term anyway) would be to start abolishing the idea of a drawn game and replacing it with a high drama “run up” penalty shootout. Indeed this has been touted for the 2026 World Cup.

23rd August 2019 at 12:25 pm #46123I won’t shoot the messenger for the message, 🙂 , but that is a ridiculous idea. If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it…
(On a side note, what happens if the goalie fouls the defender in the run-up, when the attacker fall’s over at the merest hint of contact? Start again or a “proper” penalty?)

23rd August 2019 at 12:33 pm #46124Perhaps so Banjo, but I do worry that this is the way the game is evolving. If not this, could there be powerplays where teams have to remove a defender for a period of the game to promote attacking play? I can see more things like this touted to try and force results so you have a winner and loser, rather than a “boring” draw from the broadcasters point of view.
And to answer your question what happens if a goalie fouls the player running up, it lead to a “proper” penalty in the MLS, as seen here at 2:35

23rd August 2019 at 12:41 pm #46125So, I’m now thinking goalies, the moment they sense being beaten are now going to flatten the attacking player to get a second bite of the cherry (i.e. a “proper” penalty). We all know everybody plays to the maximum “twisting” of the rules these days.
Maybe I’m just old school, leave the games as it is, it seems pretty popular now. If one team fancies it’s chances on a penalty shoot-out then let them set up defensively and play for it. Not much difference in my mind than when a team shut’s up shop when the 1-0 up… both teams are trying to keep the score the same as it is and kill the game off.

23rd August 2019 at 1:01 pm #46126They’d probably have to adapt it somewhat, but as I say, if Brian is right that the broadcasters will be the ones increasingly calling the shots, I’d expect to start seeing gimmicks like powerplays and run up penalties creeping into the game. Anything that helps increase the drama. That’s what TV ratings are all about.

23rd August 2019 at 1:20 pm #46127I don’t know if it would… it would annoy me and I’d more likely turn it off. Why not make the goals bigger, maybe add some posts like rugby so you get half a goal for over the crossbar, give the manager the option of a “bonus player” one time per match so they can have an extra player for 10 minutes, double goals for shots from outside the box, triple goals if it’s from your own half, 12 players on the bench and as many subs as you want, roll-on-roll-off style like ice-hockey, bonus goal for winning the toss… 🙂
I could play this game for ages!!

23rd August 2019 at 1:32 pm #46128Mikus, might be a bit more exciting but what does it fix? There are now no replays in English football.
It’s just an alternative to penalty shoot outs which are already quite dramatic and exciting ie ESC shoot out for instance.
I wouldn’t be significantly against it but broadly speaking on the field of play as banjo says if it’s not broken don’t try and fix it.
We’ve already got enough problems trying to come to terms with VAR and the current ridiculous handball rules which imo need amending for next season.

23rd August 2019 at 2:32 pm #46129Nine, not so much advocating it as saying I fear these are the sorts of thing we might see come in at some point if TV increasingly call the shots. At the moment, if a standard league game ends in a draw, you can almost sense a tone of disappointment in the commentator’s voice (unless there’s a late equaliser). Indeed in America, which is very influential on culture, the concept of a draw in sport is basically unheard of. There has to be a winner. Always. That’s what TV thrives on. So even some of Banjo’s wild suggestions above, might not actually look so wild to the TV people. Indeed one wonders if VAR was brought in more for the drama (like last week) rather than for righting supposed wrongs. And look at the online traffic it generates whether fans are angry or not. It’s somewhat win win for the broadcasters regardless.

23rd August 2019 at 2:51 pm #46130Mikus, hear where you are coming from mate but I really can’t see it the TV companies have had no input on any of the recent rule changes and I can’t see that ever changing and once TV companies start setting the rules in football that’s it for me.
Football without crowds doesn’t work the fans at the Etihad were bemused by what happened last Saturday too much interference with the rules that changes the enjoyment of watching the games live in the Stadiums will drive the crowds away from football and completely change the atmosphere in the grounds which will filter through to the players.
Look at the decline in attendances in Serie A. Massive teams often playing in half empty Stadiums.
Time for the FA to get involved they have a duty of care to the beautiful game and the first thing they should do is kick this stupid offensive handball rule into the long grass!

23rd August 2019 at 4:48 pm #46136Nine…I would agree with that, as you say it happened in Italy, France never had full house apart from odd situations, Spain is wavering that way I think, Germany for all the lower prices I think they will suffer as well. I am not so interested in them. I want to preserve and improve our historic leagues position but unless the FA pulls it finger out we will get nowhere. Fans will not want to deviate too much from the game we have been brought up on. The alternative is to have empty grounds and watch on the box or in my case listen on radio
We all know there is lots of money in the game, a lot of it could be divided upa little more fairly, big clubs get sponsors, smaller clubs do not get as much. I would certainly put the brakes on Transfer fees and salaries, reduce ticket prices , significantly kick the agents role out and give money to grass root future development of the gameA dream that will never happen because of the four letter word GREED

23rd August 2019 at 4:51 pm #46137Nine…I was at the Etihad and “bemused” is very understated.. You could see and hear the silence from everyone, even the Spurs contingent. This experience, for whatever reason was very damaging to spector watching fans
