Lucky, no nothing bad mate but back in those days it could all kick off and you would have to run from the Old Bill or the opposition fans to ensure you didn’t get tangled up in it.?️

30th August 2019 at 2:12 pm #46717Considering I was born in Sydney, no real idea who I should be supporting… 🙂

30th August 2019 at 2:30 pm #46718Good job things have improved considerably in that regard nine, but no wonder the match day experience and football fans developed such a bad reputation when you look at the history of it all. My choice was Cardiff and being amongst idiot drunk cardiff fans like my uncle, or following my heart and watching Gianfranco on the box, you think that was a close call? I have been teased since a teen for supporting chelsea, even my nans boyfriend from sunderland who was an old timer would not shut up about it, so I had every motivation to try to support cardiff and be more respected by traditional fans, but when it came down to it my love for chelsea far out weighed any concern I had for the opinions of others and always will.
BTW, my uncle attended every home game for cardiff, but I knew more about the club and squad than he did and I wasnt a Cardiff fan! He would be seen as a “proper” fan by many, but what attracted him to cardiff city was the opportunity to be part of a violent tribe and get sloshed, not to love football, and my feeling is that goes for many of the fans you would have classed as “proper fans” of years gone by simply because they attended every game.

30th August 2019 at 3:20 pm #46726Lucky, it’s not all black and white mate and I’m speaking generally and can completely understand your situation.
I would have been disappointed though had my Grandsons not supported Bristol City and chosen to support Manchester City instead..
But they are in the fortunate position of being able to have Season tickets and I recognise not every family can afford that.
My eldest Son was always Chelsea my youngest started out supporting Liverpool because at the time they were winning everything but the threat of just bread and water and sleeping in the shed soon took care of that.?

30th August 2019 at 3:28 pm #46727Ha,
I agree nine, when you have a local team that are in the football league that you could see regularly but you decide to instead go glory hunting, you are completely missing the point of what being a football fan is about.

30th August 2019 at 3:35 pm #46728Well I’m a Blackburn fan although I am Bolton born and bred (Blackburn is a 20 min car journey from me). None of my family liked football so I didn’t have a team until my mate and his dad took me to a Rovers match when I was about 10. Luckily for me we were really good and ended up finishing 2nd that season and won the league the season after! Not been quite so plain sailing from there but had some great times (winning the Worthington cup and Hughes’ team 04-07) and some dreadful times over the last 8 years under the Venkeys. Things are starting to look up a bit now though.
I cannot see how anyone can just say “oh well I don’t like this manager we have got so I’m not going to really support them now” That is completely wrong in my opinion. You stick with your team through thick and thin. I hated Steve Kean and Paul Ince with a passion but I would still support the boys on the pitch and go to every game I could.

30th August 2019 at 3:54 pm #46730Nine, just listening to a kid up the road playing footie with his little friend in garden and commentating while he plays. He just shouted “AND NEYMAR JUNIOR SCORES FOR WALES” ! His names Jack, next time I see him when walking my dog I’ll ask him if he knows who Gareth bleeding Bale is 🙂
Thought it was funny considering where this thread has gone.

30th August 2019 at 5:10 pm #46736Tugay, I remember jose celebrating a 1-0 victory at ewood park like he had won the world cup, I think Blackburn are a club that can re-establish themselves in the prem with good ownership. I am not up to date with whats going on with you, you said things were starting to look up a bit now, whats happening with rovers now mate, what has you most optimistic?

30th August 2019 at 8:07 pm #46743Seems like the ‘Real Fan’ debate has crept in here and some of kind search for validation of their chosen team and the background into how to show justification.
As they say, you can’t help who you fall in love with. The measure of somebody half-decent though is sticking with someone through the good and the bad.

30th August 2019 at 8:47 pm #46745Football and what is called fan base has changed considerably in recent times. Fan base did not exist years ago The good old days will never return and there are aspects of the game back in the 40/50s I would not want to see again. Progress has been made and a price is being paid.
As to how to describe a “fan” I believe if your heart tells you “X” is my team, so be it, no matter where you live. It is impossible for many fans who live near of far to get season tickets, afford them with travel cost, hence the TV supporter…and why not? After all many clubs derive more income from shirt sales from far and wide and TV viewing which is more than any gate money, even at Utd, where one of the Board members actually admitted if they loose home crowd fan base it will be covered by merchandise…words to that effect I am not critical of that statement it is the way the game is to day. My conclusion then is let your heart pick your team and support them best you can.
Last for Chuky..you dissapointed me, Spurs had a wonderful team which won the league more than once i believe…Blanchflower, Mackay etc in th 50’s if my memory is right after that I am sure they had some good teams as well. However, just so you can throw a brick at me, it would have made me happy to be at WHL…City 3 down at HT and down to 10 men and won 4-3 now that is what I call a happy day…that was not a good Spurs team. I can also remember you spanking us_____________________________

30th August 2019 at 8:55 pm #46746Nice thoughts Brian and you’ve seen more than most.
As I said earlier it’s not all black and white and not everyone can afford to go to football regularly and some choose to spend their money on other things too which is their choice.
But there’s nothing like the excitement of a Saturday and going to a live game that’s football imo.

30th August 2019 at 9:04 pm #46749Some people have money at their disposal, but don’t want to feel they have to jump through X,Y,Z hoops, knowing they still won’t probably get a Ticket anyway. Some people to me just boast, but don’t seem to want to support others.
Best thing: just for once, everyone (instead of pouncing and being condescending or point blank awkward) try showing Kindness and Understand putting aside (oh the Forum would be boring if we all agreed blah blah blah).
Let people who work all week who look forward to the Weekend Football be Happy.

30th August 2019 at 9:17 pm #46751I hope you are not getting all personal again Nil with the insults.
You do realise how all this started don’t you. If not track back to Stevo’s posts earlier this morning.
I’ve acknowledged and understand that not everyone can afford to go to live games and that it’s not all black and white ie Lucky’s example but there’s nothing better than watching a live game that’s just my opinion Nil!

30th August 2019 at 9:33 pm #46756Nine, everybody is at it. That is the cut and blow dry of it. There’s digs, unsavoury messages and everything else.
Only kind message or some sort of a saviour is Mav. That is it. There’s the same ‘residential’ posters on here god knows, 8-20 hours a day. Sometimes, I just feel it’s all too much trouble just to either have fun or put forward something meaningful.
Anyway, never an insult towards you Nine – just don’t see the need as I’ve never met you, nor anybody else for that matter.
