Thinking about it for a second.. Quite a few former players became good or even great managers. Dalgliesh was mentioned. Others are Ancelotti, Conte, Heynckes, Zidane, Blanc, Olsen (title with Ajax and 16 years as Denmark manager, just if some wondered who the hell I was taking about), Guardiola, Del Bosque, Vogts, Cruyff, Rijkaard, Beckenbauer, .. I could mention more.
Perhaps good players turning crap managers are a bit of a myth? Or is it only because not many English players have been able to take the step?

very true point.
If the ex-English players aren’t taking it upon them to see through their ambition irrespective of set-backs, then that potentially doesn’t do our National team any favours because we are in great need of young English Managers for the future.

28th April 2018 at 5:03 pm #21108Be an absolutely crazy decision. Rangers are a big club but they are all over the place on and off the field.
They donβt have much money. I agree with nine. He should go somewhere else for his 1st job

28th April 2018 at 8:54 pm #21115If he really wants to be a manager, he has to start somewhere. Personally, I would have thought he would have been better with a Champinship on Div 1 club to start. He will be a risk for any club but it works both ways as well. He does have experience on his side but other experienced players have also tried and failed. I thought Stuart Pearce would be a cracking manager for any club…then…what do I know

28th April 2018 at 9:48 pm #21119Brian, totally agree in essence.
Just feel in this modern society, there’s just an overwhelming people that are detractors of Steven Gerrard than ones that are of sincere in support.

28th April 2018 at 10:59 pm #21121Yet more nonsense Nil.
” I would like to see Gerrard become a great Manager heβs always been one of my favourite opposition players and I wish him every success in his managerial career but itβs a matter of historical fact that great players donβt always make great Managers and I would like to see Gerrard give himself the best chance of becoming a great Manager but joining Rangers who still have their own problems in a League completely dominated by Celtic imo is not the best way of him doing that.”

28th April 2018 at 11:20 pm #21122“Yet”
Nine, not really sure I can take you seriously from now on. If you can’t respect my points of view, I’m happy to let it be.
You’re playing the nonsense card, then you parallel with “life would be boring if everybody had the same point of view”.
I’ll jog on and keep my distance from now onwards. There are plenty of decent persons evidently that I can exchange my points of view and share my values.

29th April 2018 at 5:36 am #21126Right now, I reckon he’d be better off hanging around with Klopp for another year or two, he’d long a lot more that way.

29th April 2018 at 6:55 am #21127AnonymousNil, I think Nine’s original post regards Gerrard’s potential choice was a good one. He was (in my opinion) being objective and honest. I am inclined to agree with him about the whole thing and think that not only are the odds stacked against Gerrard becoming a top manager (going by our vast experience of witnessing top players trying to becoming managers), the Scottish league is a complete joke. Rodgers won an invincible treble and not one top club came in for him. That says it all.
Also Nil, if you did mean to call Nine a rival , why didn’t you? Maybe Nine misconstrued it but this was easily avoidable by using a better choice of words. Does Gerrard get more stick than he should? often, he does but you cant counter that by expecting other fans to adore him the way Liverpool fans do.
This could have all been avoid though by just not being so sensitive and picking a fairly tame comment up as if it were offensive in some way.

29th April 2018 at 10:53 am #21131Mak, I think my posts demonstrate I’ve got absolutely nothing against Steven Gerrard whatsover in fact the reverse as my post above confirms.
Like you I think it’s the wrong move for Gerrard for exactly the same reason you do it looks like happening and if it does I can only wish Gerrsrd all the very best it would be good to see some of our previoysly best players going into management and succeeding and I hope Steven Gerrard achieves that. Cheers 999

29th April 2018 at 11:00 am #21132Gerrard would want this as a stepping stone back to Liverpool. He is English and we dont have many English managers at the top.
My only doubt is whether he has the personality. I only know what I see on TV.
If he goes then wish him the best of luck.
Brendon Rogers has had it far too easy. Competition is needed._____________________________

29th April 2018 at 11:14 am #21133Adlab, couldn’t agree more with that – spot on.
As mentioned on here, I also agree that a club in the lower leagues may prove to be better in terms of learning his trade, properly.
He’s grounded and level-headed though and won’t take any prisoners.

29th April 2018 at 11:16 am #21134AnonymousThe only thing that could convince me that it’s the right move is if there is major investment waiting for him. I don’t know Rangers situation and I’m honestly not that interested. Why would you leave Liverpool as a stepping stone to Liverpool though? If the under 18 job isnt good enough for you fair enough but the SPL sn’t a respected one because it’s not competitive. What’s worse than being in a single league team? A : You’re not the single team.

29th April 2018 at 11:29 am #21137The only thing I would say about Brendan Rodgers is..yes..he has it easy , however it is hardly his fault if the rest of football in Scotland is not competative

29th April 2018 at 11:51 am #21138Brian, Rodgers knew the pitfalls when he joined Celtic it was always going to be success without any competition.
Rodgers has to move on now and challenge himself in a competitive environment imo if he’s going to take his managerial career forwards if he stays at Celtic he is just treading water in a one club league.
His problem though certainly as far as the PL is concerned is who is going to give him an opportunity despite the links to some top jobs I still think Rodgers will struggle to get a PL job in a top 6 club although I could see him getting an opportunity at a club like Leicester for instance. Cheers 999

30th April 2018 at 4:34 pm #21179Don’t know why, but a feeling in my Finnish Fire water tells me Brenda is going to end up at Newcastle before too long… maybe not this summer, but some time in the future…

30th April 2018 at 6:25 pm #21184Brian, management’s not for everyone so I don’t think we should be too harsh on the pundits and some of them have had a go in fact Souness won 4 SPL titles and 5 Scottish FA Cups in his 5 years managing Rangers which was his most successful managerial role.
At least Gerrsrd knows the size of the task now should he decide to take the Rangers role on.?

30th April 2018 at 6:46 pm #21185AnonymousChucky, i’d like to see Rodgers back in the PL. Look, he REALLY can’t stop putting his foot in his mouth but he’s a decent manager. A good call also with Newcastle because Rafa is clearly too good for them. They won’t be able to match his ambition and he’ll be taken on by a better club this or next summer, I think.
