First real bad day at the office and effectively 3 gifted goals. I can accept Konate being shown to yellows for holding, but the same should have been applied to Gabriel. Why does Havertz place his hand on his head where there was no injury inflicted.
Jorginho was a tough nut and credit to him. Jota right in the first minute should have shot on sight and we could have been in front. He was kept quiet. We had nothing really to offer after Gakpo coming off.
Van Dijk goes back to his casual self and this is my problem with him. Alisson had his confidence knocked out of him today. We could go 1 point behind by Saturday lunch time to Man City.
The positive to take from this is that there is still plenty of football to be played and lots of twists and turns. We didn’t do too badly to register this as a first league defeat since Tottenham some 18 weeks back.

4th February 2024 at 6:42 pm #212480No neither of those sides are good enough to win the league Mikus. This season is City’s without doubt.

4th February 2024 at 6:44 pm #212481Yes why does Havertz hold his head?

4th February 2024 at 6:44 pm #212482Ed, Van Dijk plays with a bit too much arrogance for me and is too casual at times. But like last season the root cause today for me was a lack of protection in midfield and being poor up top.
I agree it’s City’s to lose. We have an outside chance but need everyone fit and probably then some.

4th February 2024 at 6:45 pm #212483We play Brentford tomorrow. We lost twice to them last year

4th February 2024 at 6:46 pm #212484What I will say, whether people say we’re not good enough to win the league, we’re still occupying 1st position. and have been for several weeks and for months we were only 1 defeated. That speaks volumes and what else speaks volumes is that players virtually every week in every competition have delivered.
They can be forgiven for one bad day. It’s not the end of the world. Just need to regroup and get back on track to winning ways.

4th February 2024 at 6:48 pm #212485Adlab, what would you say to people to fans saying City will win it comfortably?
That would be showing disrespect to both Arsenal and Liverpool.
Winning it realistically, yes over 38 games, but winning by a large margin of points?

4th February 2024 at 6:49 pm #212486Agree about VVD Mikus. That’s why I don’t buy this excuse that he’s not been the same since his injury. A lack of desire and concentration has nothing to do with a previous injury. His jogging back for the last goal was embarrassing.

4th February 2024 at 7:07 pm #212489Haha Mikus. Mourinho back to Chelsea? I wonder if Poch will get another big job if he gets the sack there? He’ll probably have to work his way back up again. Maybe at an Everton, West Ham level of team.

4th February 2024 at 7:24 pm #212490Wouldn’t surprise me to Mourinho back in the Premier league. There are so few proven big club managers with personality, someone will take a punt on him. Why not Chelsea?

4th February 2024 at 7:51 pm #212491Ed/mikuis, liverpool and Arsenal are bery good sides. Its not that they arent good enough yo challenge, its just city are on an absolute different level. You meed to be hitting mad number’s to beat city. Over the last few years, they have probably been the beat side we have ever seen. Itβs nearly impossible to challenge them.
Liverpool have lost 2 games in 40 matches. You just cant draw games never-mind lose them in the 2nd part of the season as city just go up a gear.

4th February 2024 at 8:51 pm #212492They’re easily the best of the rest Sean but I don’t think either are anywhere near City. No shame in that, as you suggest.

4th February 2024 at 9:14 pm #212493Social Media vitriol once again rears it’s ugly head. On X for example, Klopp has been called a bottler for not going 8 points clear. You really please people. So called Liverpool supporters too. We don’t need fans like that. Okay so in hindsight, he may have got his selection wrong, but that’s life. We played Arsenal and a Top Team.
I’m not interested in what people say. What ever people’s opinions are Man City have the experience and have been their and done that, but with 22 games in, I don’t see them 15 points clear.
Liverpool back in 2022 were I think 2nd chasing a 14 point lead and right to the final day, Matty Cash gave hope and we were very close to winning it. I don’t recall after 2018 any other team in frequency challenging Man City the way Liverpool have done.

5th February 2024 at 11:23 am #212497I never considered us to be contenders this season nor did I see Arsenal being contenders either. As Sean says, we are top because of Klopp’s ability to squeeze everything he can out of a group of players. With players coming back it’s possible in theory we can maintain that siege type mentality Klopp installs but there would pretty much have to be no more mistakes. As for Arsenal, yes they played well, but they lack world class players up top to sustain any title challenge for me. I’m actually with Carragher on their celebrations, I think they were a bit embarrassing acting as though they’d won the league yesterday. I can’t see them winning anything this season.
As for City, for all of the money they’ve spent on players over the years, they’re still dependent (as all top clubs are) on a very few players to get them over the line. I think Aguero was the difference some years ago. And I think De Bruyne is the difference now.

5th February 2024 at 12:32 pm #212498Just the highlights from the Everton game… certainly 2 points dropped… and we need to toughen up out goalie a bit… I’ve often thought goalies have been somewhat over protected for a year or two now… but I think the very deliberate targeting and obstruction of the goalies lately is a a step too far…
Pity, both Everton goals had an element of fortune about them… we need to cut out those sort of mistakes…
