29th October 2021 at 5:10 pm #187567Ole looks what he is a dead man walking. Even if United win on Saturday and go on a winning run of games at the next defeat the problems will all re-emerge again.

29th October 2021 at 5:18 pm #187568Not only is Mendy the UEFA Goalkeeper of 2021 but he’s also statistically the best in the business.
“Mendy has saved 25 of the 28 shots on target heβs faced
He has the best save percentage (89%) of any regular goalkeeper this season.”
Best Β£22m Chelsea have ever spent imo.

29th October 2021 at 5:41 pm #187572AnonymousI do feel bad for Ole alright, especially because I think he’s more like a normal guy than your standard PL manager is. You can see that the pressure on him is a lot. I will say that were it me, I’d not be able to be asked live on TV if I think I’m going to get fired etc. The awkwardness of it would be too much.
they get paid a lot sure but they’ve got to be tough enough to not make a fool of themselves in front of so many cameras, by answering something poorly whilst the adrenaline is up. You gotta be made of pretty stern stuff for that. Some of the top managers make it look easy but these lads are not like the rest of us.

29th October 2021 at 5:43 pm #187573I think it’s probably harder for people like ole and lamps because they really love the clubs too.

29th October 2021 at 5:51 pm #187574My last say on utd as the Ed is on here on his own getting the backlash.
No worries at all Sean. We deserve being torn apart after the last weekend. I’ve said all season long we wouldn’t be winning anything this season and likely not at all under Ole.
He’ll always be a cult hero at Utd. Legend is a bit of a stretch but he’ll always be adored by the Utd fans. It’s not his fault he was given a job which was beyond his capability.

29th October 2021 at 6:18 pm #187575Chelsea have only conceded one goal from open play in the league. Thatβs a crazy stat. They are so organized and are going to be right up there in may.

29th October 2021 at 9:04 pm #187579I had Mendy in my Fantasy Team playing a Free Hit last week. Something good no doubt. Naturally from my point of view however I want him to start conceding as with Man City. These teams essentially to drop points.

29th October 2021 at 10:19 pm #187580I think there’s a degree of shock at play here. Although they finished 2nd last season, it was a very weak league. And the record away run was largely achieved without any fans in the stadia. This season Man Utd have barely played any big teams yet up until last week. But now reality has finally bitten. I think this has caught the board like a rabbit finally in the headlights and for the moment, and I don’t think they want to face it just yet and are probably in a degree of shock. And then to boot, Ole has had to deal with rising expectations.
But most people want to turn away from reality, particularly when they’ve kidded themselves for a long time that everything was fine.

30th October 2021 at 7:10 am #187583Mikus,I think there’s also this nostalgic idea amongst the clueless board that “Utd are different”. They genuinely look back at the fact Ferguson was on the brink of losing his job and, well, the rest is history. They hold desperately onto this hope that we will find another 20+ year manager and that one day they’ll all get a pat on the back for supporting him when no other club would. It’s just so naive.
I think the fact they haven’t pulled the trigger yet re Ole is all based on the Mourinho appointment and its aftermath. Utd have, rightly, been accused of jumping from one style to another due to the huge differences in the type of manager we’ve been appointing. There are massive costs involved in that scattergun approach as different styles need different players.
I think somewhere down the line, they realise they sacrificed too much of what they want Utd to be about by appointing Mourinho and have since made a big deal about this cultural reboot. “Winning; playing attacking football with players that have an ‘x-factor’; and giving youth a chance”. We’re not currently getting that first point with Ole, Winning. With Conte, we’d probably get the first one but none of the others. So, in many ways, I admire their reluctance to just abandon this new philosophy at the first sign of trouble and bring in someone else who, like Ole, delivers on some of the criteria but not the others.
I am starting to see a lot of logic in Conte coming in but for the reasons above, I don’t think it will happen. I think a lot of the board, especially Ferguson, have admired Poch for a long time. Ferguson has always spoken glowingly about him. I personally think Rodgers and Poch are the primary candidates amongst the board as they’re seen to deliver on more of the criteria, rightly or wrongly. That would certainly explain their reluctance to act as neither seem gettable right now.
So, I actually admire their persistence someewhat in sticking to this ideal candidate criteria albeit I think it’s misguided in the first place.
Another aspect of it all is if you consider those three criteria;
– Winning things
– Attacking football
– Giving youth a chanceWe were making progress on the first, doing well on the third but not really playing very attacking football. Utd have tried to dominate games more this season rather than play on the counter, which I think is an acceptance that Ole wasn’t really delivering on that particular aspect. Last season, we weren’t getting torn apart like this season. I think it’s quite simple. The coaching setup stumbled upon something that worked with the counter last season and are simply incapable of adapting to a style where we dominate the ball more. We also don’t have the midfield to do that, as I said from the very first game.

30th October 2021 at 7:57 am #187584I agree with everything you say Ed but the problem is winning games is the most important criteria.
Ole might beat Spurs and go on a bit of a winning run but the next defeat will put him back to where he is now.
Realistically right now Conte is the only realistic answer and I get why United might be frightened of him so United might well muddle on with Ole or a temporary internal appointment until the Summer and then see who they can snare then.

30th October 2021 at 8:25 am #187585Good post Ed mate. Has Ferguson not got to much of a pull there if reports are to be believed? He wanted Moyes. His comments about playing your best players after Ronaldo was dropped v Everton. His name seems to be always mentioned.
Utd looked much more solid last season. They were very difficult to beat. It was a season like no other with fans. I think mikuis predicted we would see a different utd when fans returned.
Opposing fans be worried if conte came in. Absolute winner who takes no shite. As nine says, utd win the next 5 games then lose the 6th, the vultures be back out
Get pogba out for a start.5 years of people hoping he comes good. What do you make of Ronaldos impact? Is it negative on the team, style of play etc.
He was mocking ole last week on the pitch. You can see from his offside goal that he still has it. Heβs still lethal player in front of goal but is it enough chum?

30th October 2021 at 8:40 am #187586Sean, by all accounts Ronaldo was the one holding everything together in the dressing room.
Cristiano Ronaldo's leadership has been key in the fallout from the Liverpool debacle #mufc https://t.co/1gZEzdRpUY

A true winner amongst a team full of underachievers. He has definitely upset the style and I think Threeps was spot on re needing to play a different way and with fewer luxury players to see both Ronaldo and the team thrive. A good coach would realise that and adapt.
Ferguson definitely has way too much influence still. He should be no more than an ambassador these days.
Nine, no I agree. I’m not saying they’re right to turn their noses up at Conte, just that I kind of get it and part of me finds it admirable considering the so called cultural reboot. All considered, I’d edge towards appointing Conte myself anyway but I understand their reluctance. As you say, those three criteria, whilst all important are not equal. There’s a reason winning comes first in that list.

30th October 2021 at 10:25 am #187587π¨ Antonio Conte will not take charge of a team mid-season and wants to have decision-making power at any job he does take.
The Italian has turned down both offers from Newcastle and Manchester United.

30th October 2021 at 10:29 am #187588AnonymousThat article is kinda damning really. He’s given Van De Beek 5 minutes in the PL? And he’s meant to be impressing people in training? WTF. Ole hasn’t got a clue. Woodward is still in his position, but doesn’t attend matches… What a shock! No wonder nothing is being done, the guy is blissfully unaware of the problems. He’s probably doing lines off his new contract proposal as I write this.
