Chuky…I would not worry about it…they will probably change it again soon!!! I do not understand it either…play goes on for ages and they retro it. What if an injury occurred in those wasted minutes. Another mystery. the ball hits the ref, the advantage is given to the passing player….hoe does he know the ball will go where intended. For me, it is the same as hitting the post and if a player cannot pass around him he should take some extra lessons!! All daft to me but they will carry on doing all these changes regardless. Keep the game simple. nothing wrong with it since year dot except if you are a media Company.

9th October 2022 at 9:13 am #199580That’s what really worries me too, BB, some poor sod is likley to get an ankle snapped from a last ditch tackle that didn’t need to happen… if the Lino thinks it’s offside, then flag it… don’t wait and see what happens…

9th October 2022 at 9:28 am #199581Banjo, there are some flags raised when off side is so clear that there is no point allowing play to go on, I give you that, but they are doing what they are told by letting play run on as it will stop goals being ruled out by incorrect flags.
I am all for that but again sometimes the offside is so clear it makes it look stupid.

9th October 2022 at 10:09 am #199582That’s the thing, Nepolean, VAR wasn’t even involved. I’ll try to descirbe it… π
Brighton pushing high, loose ball in the middle, but it was obvious a Spud player was going to get to it first, Son sets off… at the moment the ball was played I did think to myself “hmmm.. that’s close!”… Son gets the ball, has a little dance was a couple of Brighton defenders who had closed him down, and then curls it in from 20 yeards (you know the drill, he’s done it enough times now!)… ball hits the the back of the net and before the ball even hits the floor, the lino decides to put his flag up, knowing Son was offside about 5 seconds ago… but thought he would jog back and see what happens… no VAR involved at all.
Now, what if one of the Brighton players lunges in a bit depserate, injures Son (or himself for that matter)? All during a passage of play that shouldn’t have been going on? We’ve wasted how much time watching the passage play out, all move back up the pitch, re-start the game etc…
If the Lino knew it was offside, he should have flagged the moment he knew… end of!

9th October 2022 at 10:16 am #199583What was the point in signing Melo?
More to the point, we need to implement 4-2-3-1 to stand any chance today of getting anything at the Emirates.
First time I’ve felt like the underdog probably since 2017 (the Coutinho free-kick)
We need to start with Jota, Nunez and Firmino. Salah, I’m not so sure. Tough tough game to try and keep out their quality.

9th October 2022 at 10:42 am #199584Looking forward to it, get to wind-up either Buffy MacBuffpants or yourself… can’t lose, really! π
Shame about Melo, you don’t wish that on any player, reckon you’ll send him back in Jan. Lots of chatter about Bellingham going to Madrid next summer now. Where does that leave LiVARberoOol?

9th October 2022 at 10:48 am #199585Banjo, spurs scored a goal that was disallowed after linesman flag and it wasn’t checked with VAR?
My thinking is it was better to let Son score and then decide if he was offside than to flag and whistle before he strikes the ball but that only makes sense if it’s done to allow VAR to check.

9th October 2022 at 10:52 am #199586If VAR was consulted, as it was “close”, then it was the quickest VAR check in the history of everything ever… to me, it was like the Lino knew it was offside, but didn’t bother flagging until it was a goal… (would have liked to see the “lines” anyway, like I said, it looked very close indeed from the freeze frame I saw on my TV!)

9th October 2022 at 10:52 am #199587Chucks, it takes the mick mate to say the least. We need a 30 day money back guarantee or some form of an insurance policy, because it’s ludicrous.
We seem to be at times in a trend of signing injury prone players!

9th October 2022 at 10:52 am #199588“If the Lino knew it was offside, he should have flagged the moment he knewβ¦ end of!”
But it’s what they think, not necessarily what they “know”. Many a good goal has been either ruled out or made impossible by incorrect flags over the years.

9th October 2022 at 10:54 am #199589That’s definitely a grey area with that ruling, but players have to treat it as ‘real time’ so challenges etc are likely to prevent a goal.
I don’t like it personally and we should go back to how it was.

9th October 2022 at 10:54 am #199590If it was close it surely would have been checked banjo and also its the close ones that really need to be allowed to play on a bit. He could have been onside.

9th October 2022 at 10:58 am #199591Exactly, but there was no check… the lino played “advantage”, and then flagged the moment the ball when in the net… there were barely inches in it, depending on where the lines might have appeared… it just all seemed a bit “make it up as we go along”…

9th October 2022 at 11:00 am #199592If the lino isn’t sure, fine, let it play out and go to VAR… but don’t let it play out and then go “back” depending on how it plays out… if it’s “clear” enough, then flag it when it happens…

9th October 2022 at 11:07 am #199594I can’t believe it wasn’t checked banjo
In this incident as you described, it seems perfectly right for the linesman to delay raising his flag. If a goal is scored he then raises it if he thought it was offside or doesn’t if he didn’t. All goals are checked by VAR and if he was wrong the goal could have stood.
Struggling to see your point on this one bud, especially since you describe it as close and therefore it couldn’t possibly have been clear enough in real time.

9th October 2022 at 11:12 am #199595When will VAR be used in Premier League matches?
“The VAR is constantly monitoring the match.
VAR is used only for “clear and obvious errors” or “serious missed incidents” in four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity.
But factual decisions such as offsides, and the issue of whether a player is inside or outside the penalty area, are not subject to the “clear and obvious” test.
If the VAR sees an error has been made in such a situation they will intervene, regardless of how marginal the decision is.”
VAR would have checked for sure Banio, the broadcaster you were watching must not have highlighted it.

9th October 2022 at 12:15 pm #199596True enough, I’ll give the commentary/channel angle, (don’t understand a bloody word they say! π ) but, to me, it looked like the lino wasn’t fussed about it until the ball hit the net, and if VAR did check it, then it was the quickest VAR check in history… π

9th October 2022 at 12:18 pm #199597On a very different note, I’ve just noticed LiVARberoOol have Haaland FC next week… lose these 2 and it’s going to be a long season for the Micky Mousers…

9th October 2022 at 12:34 pm #199598Why would Juventus take Melo back when Liverpool are paying his wages? They would be daft to do that.

9th October 2022 at 12:35 pm #199599Yeah massive games banjo, both. Wouldn’t rule them out winning both to be fair but though but extremely tough games.
