Is Koulibaly as good as everyone thought he was these last few seasons. I know he has to be given time but I’ve not been that impressed by him at all. He’s been so hyped up for years now. I said when he came in, I would be a bit wary as I found it strange that nobody had come in for him until now and Rafa Benitez was a bit critical of him too ahead of his move to Chelsea.

4th September 2022 at 8:19 am #198634Mikuis, another good example is James kicking out on Antonio yday. Antonio goes off then James be sent off. He should have been sent off either way for kicking out.
Totally agree about Crucrella aswell. Free out all day but because he doesnβt make a meal of it then itβs fine.

4th September 2022 at 8:45 am #198635Going to play devil’s advacote here…
Comments have been made that if a player “doesn’t go down”, then a peno isn’t given… I’m going to suggest if a player “doesn’t go down” then perhaps there wasn’t enough in the “tackle” to warrent a penalty anyway? (Don’t know if your talking about a specific incident here or not, mind you).
Having players, managers, pundits, and even us fans, all suggest that a player should take a “dive” the minute he feel’s contact to ensure a pen, is actually making the game worse.
Just because there’s contact, doesn’t mean it’s a peno, it’s a contact sport chaps!
I still say peno’s should only be given when a goal-scoring oppotunity is denied, not because if just happened to be in the box, and I also think peno’s should be give for those “taking one for the team” fouls that occur on breakaways…. we had two when Spuds were breaking and brought to an immediate halt. With the way we play, you would fancy a decent goal scoring opptunity at the end of it… but just got a couple of yellows..

4th September 2022 at 9:49 am #198636Ed City twice backed out of Koulibali. Once because the fee was stupid and second doubts about his ability.

4th September 2022 at 10:01 am #198637Yeah Adlab, I think every top 6 club has been linked with Koulibaly at some point or another over the last 5 years. I’ve never really understood the hype from when I’ve seen him in the CL.

4th September 2022 at 10:27 am #198639I get you banjo, Iβm talking about absolutely clear found that are not given as the player has stayed on his feet.
Ridiculous decisions yesterday. Really crazy stuff

4th September 2022 at 10:41 am #198641VAR I feel with this in particular is going to be imperative and highly influential.
The way the itinerary is set now to accommodate this seasons domestic games and europe, plus of course the world cup means Managers are going to feel the pressure game in game out. You can’t afford a second rate VAR system that’s unreliable and getting wrong calls. The Managers need to all rally together and exercise this properly with the Referees.

4th September 2022 at 10:41 am #198640VAR is just exposing how poor the officials in the English Premier League are.

4th September 2022 at 1:01 pm #198646Chucky, I think the Cucurella hair pull incident sums up the dilemma in this whole thing. The ref should have given the foul but they didnβt. So you could forgive Cucurella for making a meal of it next time so he does get the foul. He shouldn’t have to do that but this is a problem that people thought VAR would solve but it can’t, ultimately because the VAR refs are still subjective. But the players know that if they feign injury they will tend to get the decision they want because no referee wants to risk overlooking a serious injury to a player – particularly on a goalkeeper with regards to Mendy yesterday. But it works both ways, some players will feel justified in making a meal of something, like Cucurella to ensure they rightly get the free kick, or a penalty, if say, unfairly barged off the ball but able to stay on their feet. But then you can also abuse the system to feign injury to get a foul given.
I really don’t know what the solution to that is. All you can hope is the refs judge things as best they can taking everything into account. In an ideal world the referees probably need a bit of time to make the best decision. But then the fans and viewing public don’t want long decision making which disturbs the flow of the game.

4th September 2022 at 1:12 pm #198647I think the biggest problem is everybody is assuming VAR will suddenly make everything black and white, and with certain things it will certainly make them a lot clearer (off-sides, in/out the box, etc…) but when it comes down to whether certain insances are fouls or not, then there’s always going to be a grey area. VAR wil be enable to determine whether contact was made, but how on earth is a machine (and the ref for that matter!) ever going to detect whether it was a foul or not…
I haven’t actually seen the Mendy incident so I’m not in a position to judge one way or the other, but Tommy Tickle has come out and said it was the correct call, Moyes said it wasn’t (and most of you are suggesting it was “soft” at best, and despite most of you being mental and supporting stupid teams, you lot do sometimes know what you’re talking about! π ) But in VAR land, contact was made, so is Tommy Tickle wrong in suggesting it was the right decision in the end? Or is Tommy Tickle just defending his team no matter what and making himslef look a prat in the process?
Oh, and yes, Cuti should have been pulled up for the hair-tug… no defending that for one second.

4th September 2022 at 3:12 pm #198650And another dodgy offside there… Seagull player was abrely and inch offside, Foxy Lady headed it out anyway… and anther Seagull smacked it in from 22 yards…. bit harsh to blow that for offside, the argument for “interferring with play”, which I guess is the only “excuse” here, is thinner than a pair of Buffy’s favorite pants.

4th September 2022 at 3:22 pm #198652Chuky, my view of the Mendy incident was the ball was there to be won and the attacker had quicker intentions than the keeper. This opens up a whole set of new potential rules on incidents like this and it is then down to interpretation off the pitch by suits. I said at the very outset of Var, this is one step from corruption. Nothing wrong with VAR but it is governed by humans and that is where the problem will continue to grow. Of course , they will continue to change rules etc…for what? Just leave it as goal line technology and let the players and officials get on with the job.

4th September 2022 at 3:29 pm #198653When you watch the Italian league and Spanish league , along with international tournaments such as the world cup and the euros, there’s very little errors amongst referee’s when using VAR. Yet in the PL, they seem to get it wrong. Officiating in the PL is extremely poor and has been for years, VAR has just made that more evident.

4th September 2022 at 3:32 pm #198654Double B, like I said, I haven’t actually seen it, but judging from commments everywhere, it seems it was minimal contact was maed at best, and Mendy rolled around and made a 3 course dinner of it, highlighting the fact there was contact… some would call it simulation, some would call it play acting, some would say it was cheating…
I think they ended up calling it a “foul” because the other option was to book Mendy for cheating…

4th September 2022 at 3:35 pm #198655Unfortunately, this is now essentially a stand out statistic of 1 point from the first 6 matches. Brendan will be relieved of his duties from tomorrow. I don’t know who comes in.
Gerrard is hanging by the thread, however, an encouraging display yester evening from the claret and blue against the reigning champions so maybe a corner is turned.
Brighton meanwhile are flying!
