In addition to the above, clubs that bought players that they knew would probably be selected for the Africa Cup of Nations, which was held mid season every two years didn’t get any special treatment, despite losing players for three or four weeks. I personally see that as no different to this, however the ACN is now held in June so no longer has the same impact………..Pagan

8th September 2021 at 6:15 pm #184655Anonymous“It’s a FIFA rule Brazil are within the rights to enact it. ”
I never said it wasnt a rule Nine and it being one, doesnt mean it is the way things should be, especially given the circumstances. The rule wasnt drafted with covid in mind. It is there to make sure that teams don’t force players to skip international matches but what’s happening is countries are forcing players to skip club matches. So, you’re having a rule that is going against the very reason it was created, only reversing institutions.
“Playing a game of footy isn’t really a good enough reason to bypass the quarantine rules.”
No but a compromise can be made, especially given how you’re not talking about some average Joes, but mega-rich entities, who have long been operating under stronger than normal covid testing and prevention practices. Nobody is asking that players be allowed to skirt through willy-nilly.
Liverpool should play the banned players. Let them give us a 3-0 if they want to. None of this should be happening now and to say “thems the rules’, well you could apply that to a lot of other things that covid came wading in and changed.
Alisson and Fabinho will cheer us on from the stands I guess. lovely.

8th September 2021 at 6:37 pm #184656They have no extra prevention practices in reality, they do have testing but so do other professions and they wouldn’t be exempt.
And unfortunately Mak, being able to sometimes kick a bag of wind into 24 x 8 frame doesn’t elevate them above being an everyday Joe.
Whilst the rules were written pre COVID, we can’t re write them retrospectively for the top teams to benefit.
This should have been thought about ages ago, but then again the same people didn’t realise it was hot in the summer in Qatar……Pagan

8th September 2021 at 6:46 pm #184657I think you hit the nail on the head earlier Pagan the 10 day quarantine rules applies to everyone there are no exceptions the British and Irish Lions had to isolate for 10 days on their return to the UK and rightly so imo given the seriousness of Covid still in the UK there should be no exceptions.
As you touched on given the above rule I think Clubs/the PL chose not to release players and take their chances on the 5 day penalty because it was a better choice than the 10 day isolation rule for visiting a red listed country.
There’s also still a chance that there might yet be a negotiated settlement between now and the weekend.
If not all the Club’s knew the potential consequences of not sending their players and everyone is still better off than having their players isolate for 10 days.

8th September 2021 at 6:57 pm #1846589, but if they relax the rules then those that played by them and now have to quarantine are being penalised for doing so, that’s really unfair………Pagan

Ok, then the players don’t go. There should be no exceptions for petty banning then?

8th September 2021 at 7:26 pm #184661Mak, it’s a no win situation, you either comply with the law or with FIFA rules, it’s lose, lose not quite as badly for clubs……….Pagan

As i said above, fine they dont go but you’re right, they arent like everyday Joe. They were legally obligated to play through the covid crisis and face punishment, regardless of what they do here. There is no ,correct action that doesnt lead to them missing games. One of those avenues is that they must quarantine, which is understandable, even though I think there is an argument there but, its not important. The other avenue has them banned from playing, through no fault of their own. since it’s fairness that we’re interested in here…

8th September 2021 at 7:30 pm #184664AnonymousThat’s my point though Pagan, it’s a lose lose but it doesnt have to be and shouldnt be that way. The rule that Brazil are going by here is being miss-used. Covid came in and changed so much of everything else but this is the time we choose to say “no more!”?
Brazil are exploiting the rules to punish players who were put into an impossible situation. I guess we’re going to have to agree to disagree but it is my team who is most-shafted by it, of course I’d be the loudest voice on the matter 😛

8th September 2021 at 7:35 pm #184666Sorry Mak,but I’ve seen the mental health issues and fatigue issues with the lads that work for me and it’s been really difficult to manage as I’ve really had to cover to keep them in the best health I can, and to be honest footballers had a really easy ride………Pagan

8th September 2021 at 7:56 pm #184668Mak, I’m genuinely sorry if I came across rude, but the last 18 months or so have been really stressful. Only recently I’ve had someone at a cricket club tell me how hard done to they are in that they’re going to have to go back to work after being on furlough, and that because they’re on piece work they could be slightly worse off. Hope you accept my apologies ………Pagan

8th September 2021 at 8:24 pm #184669Pagan, it’s down to FIFA to decide whether to implement the 5 day ban or not that’s a football rule which FIFA could possibly overturn.
The players who went to play for their countries who were on the red list knew they would have to quarantine for 10 days that’s is a British Government rule and can’t be overturned.

I didnt think you were being rude to me, so no worries there at all. It’s a stressful time and a stressful old life in general anyway isnt it. I also didnt mean to suggest that footballers had it tougher than others, more that they just had no option but to expose themselves, even though they weren’t essential. I should have stated it clearer.
No need to apologize at all mate 😉
Sean, fair enough man. We all have our own take on things, hopefully it won’t matter in the end.
