I think Spurs and Arsenal look sound bets for a top 4 place this season. City and Liverpool still look the most likely bets for the title though.

29th August 2022 at 10:16 am #198336There’s genuinely a good mix of teams on this evidence of what has unfolded so far that are going to give the so-called big boys a game. No fear.
Football though seems more like end to end basketball, so it seems more fashionable to now go out and attack than to park a bus. The fear factor refreshingly broken.

29th August 2022 at 11:29 am #198337Maybe optimistic that Nil, as the season wears on Parking the bus will become the status again when point are more important but I do welcome the new found confidence of teams outside the top 4 to take the game on the attack as the first principle. Good luck to them

29th August 2022 at 2:51 pm #198344I know I will get broken record stick from Ed but United have spent Β£128m before Β£84m on Antony, so north of Β£200m and yet not a word anywhere about this being excessive when you are half a billion in debt, no CL and paying Ronaldo half a million a week.
FFP so called is clearly for some but not others.
Ed as a sensible and thoughtful United supporter and ignoring each others obvious bias, how is this level of spending OK? Ln addition look at the United share price. $17 a year ago $13 today. A 24% decline

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-united/transfers/verein/985Please don’t have a go as I am genuinely interested in your unbiased view. I just think of the demise Barca are in. Perhaps it will get too expensive to put the floodlights on (everywhere)

29th August 2022 at 4:17 pm #198348Adlab, United are rebuilding, the City squad is so strong City are just topping up.
City have still spent more than United over the last 5 years 505m by City v 378m by United.
I think United will have more than enough to fund the lights going forwards question is will we.π

29th August 2022 at 5:21 pm #198354Adlab, if you haven’t heard criticism of Utd for spending so much on Casemiro because of his age and Martinez because of his height then I don’t know what media you consume. It’s been absolutely everywhere. Antony isn’t even completed yet so obviously little has been said of that so far. I think this summer has been an awful one from Utd and it shows how badly run we are that we’ll be spending over 200mil and still didn’t land the top target in De Jong.
I’m not sure what you mean regarding debt and FFP. Utd easily earn enough to afford these transfers. As for debt, there’s nobody less critical of the debt than our own fans so we’re on the same page regarding that debt being ridiculous. If you’ve missed the fact there have been loads of protests against the owners recently, again, I’m not sure how π.
Utd, like everyone else, bar Liverpool are miles behind City and need to do what City have been doing for years and that’s spending silly money to catch up. It’s easy to sit there at the top with bottomless pots of money and say how great you are but if clubs don’t continue to spend to catch up, this league will very quickly become very boring and will turn into the Bundesliga which would be a real shame for the neutrals.
To be honest, the only signings I’m really happy about so far at Utd are Eriksen and Malacia who together cost less than 20mil. I have a feeling Antony will flop and Casemiro I’m not sure about. For that money, he wasn’t really what we need.

29th August 2022 at 5:24 pm #198355Nine…very selective time span…why not go for 10 or 15 or 20 whatever I understand Utd wanting to spend, they have to improve and I think they will, at a cost, just like City. I would like to see a cap on the lot but there will always be ways around Caps

29th August 2022 at 5:34 pm #198356MoneyBags spend a billion and hoover up all the trophies (except the CL!! LOL!!!), which is why everybody hates them (that, and their evil owners!)
YooUtd spend a billion on garbage, winn chuff-all, and their owners are just morons, not evil morons, hence it’s more amusing than annoying, so long may it continue… π

29th August 2022 at 6:14 pm #198359I still fancy chelsea for top 4. Lets see were arsenal are after 15 games. Done well so far and big test Sunday. Letβs see if they have the balls for old Trafford. Very early days but city will walk the league
Chelsea should be cruising into the top 4 with the money they have spent. Great manager but he be sacked if they donβt get top 4.

29th August 2022 at 7:27 pm #198361Brian, the 5 year time span was the one available and analysed and I would suggest the most relevant if we were to go back 20 years that would be before City were owned by sovereign state with unlimited spending power.
By the way my post was in response to your fellow City fan digging out United.
Here’s a quote from Pep below following Lampard’s sacking he’s always been consistent with his views re results although Pep could take a bad run of results as he’s got so much credit in the Bank.
“Young and old managers, here you have to win,” Guardiola said. “When the people talk about projects and ideas, they don’t exist. You have to win; if not, you will be sacked.”

Tell you what Brian if City only finish 3rd I will run around Stamford Bridge naked.π

29th August 2022 at 8:38 pm #198365OK. Nine…I still make my point….if you are going to make comparisons then logically you have to go back to the year DOT. There is a limit to City spend, I would also disagree with my City friend, pointless bringing up comparisons like this. As I have said before, Utd will always find a way to fund whatever they want. good luck to them. but to keep harping on about City wealth serves no purpose either. In various era’s of football since I have been following the game there has always been clubs that have considerable wealth more than others but the game evolves and these thing do not last forever, next we will have clubs with owners paying 100 million for 16/7 yr olds
I have said before City have been extremely lucky in getting these owners who are doing more than just build a football club for the City of Manchester, other clubs will follow. Then I wonder why all the wealthy clubs of years ago did not plan better, mostly because they were seduced into buying players at high costs to charm there ego….I remember city signing a Wolves player for a Million, Rodney Marsh who costs us the league. etc. It is noticeable as well that the majority of EPL clubs are owned byInvestments from outside the country, where have all our wealthy people gone? Probably had a reality check in investing in football!! All points of view Nine, not saying I am right, just what I think_____________________________

30th August 2022 at 6:43 am #198366“There is a limit to City spend”
There’s also a limit to the Universe but it’s still pretty big!
Thing is Brian, and I mean this with respect, is that you are clearly a man with a lot of football memories and I think has a fondness towards “the good ol days”. Yet in many peoples eyes including my own your team City has done more in the country than any other in the history of football to move the sport away from those traditions and turn it into a rich state’s vanity play thing. Other teams have spent a lot in the past and even now but they do that from their own success on and off the pitch, City are a lower Premier League level club that should normally be seeing mid table as a success yet have effectively won the lottery and are looking to make the league a formality every season like in France or Germany.
You could argue Chelsea have done the same and to a point I’d agree and hence why I believe there is resentment towards them also from other fans but at least they were on their way to the top at the time.
City have done some great things for the area I am sure. They are incredibly well run, from the boardroom to the coaching staff to some very clever and no doubt well paid lawyers. They also have owners with a more than dubious reputation when it comes to human rights and are using the club as a form of sportswashing yet when mentioned you conveniently decide sport and politics shouldn’t mix. Well to a lot of fans that does matter.
As for Adlab going on about Utd’s spending and debt, well I don’t know their finances but I am sure the signings are not putting on more debt, they will come from the revenue they generate. Do you think teams that don’t have a sugardaddy like your’s shouldn’t be allowed to make big signings no matter how they control their finances and remain within the legal parameters?
I thought about this a bit recently and I say it partially in jest but fans of other teams should be thanking Liverpool for at least making the league semi-interesting. Without us City would steamroll every season and turn it into a formallity like the aforementioned French and German leagues, how boring would that be? It’s already what 4/5? 5/6? I cannot remember, but without Liverpool it would be a clean sweep. I hope the likes of Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea can close the gap by speeding however and make the league competitive again.

30th August 2022 at 7:45 am #198369Brian. I’ve got nothing against City in fact the reverse I enjoy the football City play and always try to watch them in their live games on TV and I have a high regard for the City posters on here too even Adlab (although he can be testing at times) and especially you.π
My original post was in response to Adlab’s post criticising United I don’t think Chelsea fans and City fans are in a position to question anyone elses spending.
Adlab comes over with such posts as a Poacher turned Gamekeeper with his regular criticism of other Clubs transfer expenditure which is unhelpful and is always likely to create a string of responses on here. Peace and Love 9’s

30th August 2022 at 9:08 am #198370Never has Manager’s being judged by results been more ably demonstrated than by the sacking of Scott Parker after just 4 games on the back of 3 heavy consecutive defeats.
