“Liverpool and Chelsea are set to be two of the sides to compete in the revamped FIFA Club World Cup which has been awarded to China.
The extended competition is heading for the Far East from 2021 and will replace the Confederations Cup in the football calendar, report the New York Times.
It will see an end to the Club World Cup as an annual competition following the conclusion of next year’s edition.
Europe will reportedly boast eight of the 24 teams to compete in the revamped tournament, with six coming from South America and the remained coming from other regional confederations.
The eight places are expected to be awarded to the winners of Europe’s two flagship club competitions – the Champions League and the Europa League – over a four-year period.
That would see Liverpool – who won last season’s Champions League – and Chelsea – who won the Europa League – take part in the competition in 2021.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid would also compete as the winners of the two tournaments in the 2017-18 campaign.
It is reported FIFA chief Gianni Infantino had initially wanted 12 of the 24 spots to be allocated to European teams, but backed down after opposition from UEFA.” Daily Mirror

21st October 2019 at 1:50 pm #50658Brilliant, more games for everybody to complain about having to take part in…
Is it mid-season to help create fixture congestion or in the summer to really kill the players??
What a load of bullocks, this goes in the VAR idea folder, or the “What a load of shite!” ideas….

21st October 2019 at 2:02 pm #50660China is set to be awarded the inaugural version of the expanded Club World Cup, a controversial and lucrative new football competition designed to feature many of the worldβs biggest club teams.
The Asian country will be proposed as the host nation for the new tournament during a meeting of the ruling council of Fifa, international footballβs governing body, in Shanghai on Friday.
Fifa declined to comment, but one of the organisationβs executives said the council will vote on the matter next week.
However, no other countries are in the running to host the international club tournament, which will begin in the summer of 2021, according to two people with direct knowledge of the deliberations.
The New York Times was first to report that China was likely to be awarded the competition.
The format will replace the current eight-team annual Club World Cup with a 24-team contest featuring at least eight European teams that takes place every four years.
The proposals are vastly different to Fifa president Gianni Infantinoβs original concept, which was backed by an international consortium including Japanβs SoftBank and London-based Centricus. That would have guaranteed $25bn for an expanded Club World Cup, along with a new league contest for national teams.
In March, Fifa said it would press ahead with a βpilotβ version of the expanded club competition but scrapped the national team contest altogether.
A person close to the recent talks said commercial considerations for the new club tournament would be decided at a later date, though it is expected to become a valuable revenue source for Fifa, which is reliant on income from the World Cup.
The expanded club tournament has proved controversial, however. Uefa, European footballβs governing body, and the European Club Association, a trade body that represents more than 200 of the continentβs biggest clubs, have previously said they would boycott the concept.
It appears that a consensus to press ahead with the expanded competition will be reached on Friday (and is scheduled to take place in June /July 2021) and take place every 4 years.
Appealing to Chinese fans is priority of many of Europeβs biggest clubs, while Chinaβs President Xi Jinping has unveiled plans for a sporting revolution that would turn the worldβs most populous nation from a football backwater into a powerhouse. Financial Times Magazine.

21st October 2019 at 2:13 pm #50661If this happens and happens as reported then based on the recommended timings I can’t see it being to strenuous for whoever is selected to participate in it. Clubs would normally take part in pre season games broadly speaking at this time.

21st October 2019 at 2:46 pm #50664You’re forgetting Puppy, clubs don’t piss and moan about pre-season tours because that’s a good thing, that’s about the “money”… π

21st October 2019 at 5:15 pm #50673Chucky, as I said all the top Clubs go far and wide on pre season tours this is just a more competitive version of that. Also its a FIFA competition and Clubs are obliged to compete if they’ve won one of the two major European trophies in the preceding seasons.

21st October 2019 at 5:25 pm #50678Joking aside, was there any gossip about the format? 24 clubs isn’t a straight knockout, so I can only assume some sort of round-robin mini-league to kick things off (to weed out the “shitty” teams more like!), and then maybe a final 16 or even 8 (my money, because if the money is 16!).
8 x 3 team mini-leagues, so everybody gets cash for at least two games, then knock-out from 16 onwards, the finalists (and semi-finalists, as I’m sure there’s a 3rd/4th place playoff!) so the “big” teams get to play 6 games… that should keep the accountants happy! π

21st October 2019 at 6:14 pm #50682Taking up Chuckles point, it will probably be in addition to post and pre season tours, you still have to keep sponsors happy and grow the global fan base…Pagan

21st October 2019 at 8:11 pm #50694It’s once every 4 years Pagan and you have to win one of the two European trophies in that previous 4 years to participate
I’m sure the top European Clubs that get to compete in the World Club Cup can cope with that and the sponsors will be happy with the additional worldwide coverage they will get from any participation and given that China is one of the most important markets for football I don’t think the Club’s will be too disappointed if one season in 4 that the regular qualifiers miss too much the chance for a full pre season tour given the extra exposure that a Club World Cup would do for growing the worldwide fan base especially in locations like China.
Personally I think it sounds like a very exciting competition whether Chelsea get to participate in the anugral Club World Cup or not and PL Club involvement will always be limited by our success in European Competitions.
Seemingly the World Club Cup is coming though whether we like it or not and we’ll all have to adapt to it but as I said it sounds good to me!

21st October 2019 at 8:18 pm #506979s, I get China is a booming market, but the next one could be held in Europe, which may not tick all the boxes. Yep probably a good tournament, but weβre slowly heading for a 12 month season…Pagan

21st October 2019 at 8:18 pm #50698The itinerary seems to be the knuckle-dragger.
Liverpool being European Cup Champions agreed to participate in the tournament as it’s a prestigious Silverware occasion to boot. Effectively, you only get to ‘do it once’ or once in a life-time.
It shouldn’t be turned down as it’s another opportunity.
With this year being the England qualifiers, they practically take up 2 weeks each month which I don’t agree with. The very top teams to some degree have to take a ‘hit’ and compromise utilizing the depth of the squad.
Even with this in mind, there is travelling and playing matches with barely 48 hours of rest. It’s the people at the top that will look at the Pound signs, but nobody thinking about conditions and the impact of stress imposed on Players.

21st October 2019 at 8:21 pm #50699I think going forward, the season will carry right the way through to June.
I’m with Chucks. These guys need to take 2 steps back on the Pre-season and stick with ‘in house’ matches like in tradition rather than these lucrative tours around the world.
