Just came across this, knew he was good, but didn’t know he was this good, he won the treble on the back of a -£40000 net spend

29th April 2024 at 9:54 am #214240Wow, look at the scale back then! I’m sure big money signings existed, and Liverpool lacked the spending power they had in the 80s.
I would go back to this in a heartbeat! Mo Salah etc doesn’t need 400,000 a week. It’s ridiculous.
Lots of variables to factor in and the number one thought being the population/fan base increase in scale impacting Tv Audiences and Revenue. Remember back then, not many households could afford Sky Sports, etc.

29th April 2024 at 1:15 pm #214246Where is this from? What Source? These figures are completely wrong. I have had a look and i get it at a net spend of £26.95m Still not loads considering what they won. I would question the other figures of the other teams if the United one is so wildly wrong!
The major signings for United were (over £500,000):
1992 – Dublin £1m
1992- Cantona £1.2m
1993- Keane £3.75m
1994- May – £1.4m
1995- Cole £7m
1996- Van Der Gouw £500,000
1996- Johnsen £1.2m
1996- Solskjaer £1.5m
1996- Poborsky £3.5m
1996- Cruyff £1.5m
1997- Sheringham £3.5m
1997- Nevland £1.5m
1997- Berg £5m
1998- Greening £750,000
1998- Stam £10.75m
1998- Yorke £12.6mTotal £56.65m (plus around £600,000 in other signings) so £57.25m
Major Outgoings Over £500,000:
1992- Robins £800,000
1992- Webb £800,000
1994- Dublin £1.95m
1995- Gillespie £1m
1995- Hughes £1.5m
1995- Ince £7m
1995- Kanchelskis £5.8m
1996- Sharpe £4.5m
1997- Poborsky £2m
1998- Pallister £2mTOTAL: £27.35m (plus around £2.95m other signings £30.3m
This gives is a net spend of £26.95m
Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet…
(Yes I was bored)

I believe the figures go up to the players bought in before the 98-99 season. So from seasons 92-93 to 97-98.

29th April 2024 at 2:16 pm #214250Ok, even using those transfers it is still £10.2m so it is still wrong.

29th April 2024 at 3:11 pm #214253The Newcastle one is £7m out and is £34.5m
The Arsenal one is £7m out and is £24m
The Liverpool one is £4m out and is £25.7m
The Chelsea one is bang on at £27.7
The Spurs one is £11m out and is £29.8m
The City one is £1m out at £13m
Aston Villa were £22m
Everton were £18.3
West Ham were £3.5m
Leeds were £22.7Just to add another one in there, Blackburn who were seen as big spenders actually were in profit by £100,000!
In conclusion, Man United didn’t spend as much as other clubs in those years. They then went on to spend a lot more.
Very quiet at work today so spent an hour looking this up haha.

29th April 2024 at 6:25 pm #214260Not sure why my response to Tugay was not posted.
Looking at the below website, the fees mentioned in my original post are pretty accurate. United’s was -£40000
Blackburn net spend within that time was £30m.

29th April 2024 at 6:47 pm #214261Apologies Blackburn spent £3m net. Massive fire sale after Jack Walker left.
But leading up to their title win, they spent £19m net. United spent -£900,000.

A bad season? Extremely generous there. A bad decade is more accurate.
Theres nothing good to say about this United side, so I have to go back a number of decades.

30th April 2024 at 7:58 am #214268Fergie hit the jackpot in 1992 with the core team for the next decade and more all graduating from the academy at once. It was a youth intake that has never been seen since and meant he was in the position to fine tune the squad rather than overhaul like others.

Far from wrong bud.
92-93- £215.000 net
93-94- £285.000 net
94-95- minus £3.9m net
95-96- £2.9m
96-97- £500,000 net
97-98 – minus £2.5mSo the figures is roughly-£40000
https://www.transferleague.co.uk/manchester-united/english-football-teams/manchester-united-transfersBlackburn spent £30m net
https://www.transferleague.co.uk/blackburn-rovers/english-football-teams/blackburn-rovers-transfersNewcastle is pretty accurate too https://www.transferleague.co.uk/newcastle-united/english-football-teams/newcastle-united-transfers
Liverpool is £29m net between those times

30th April 2024 at 10:55 am #214270I used Soccer base and added them up season by season. I’m pretty confident this is more accurate.
https://www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=1724&teamTabs=transfers
You can also look up every team and every season going back as far as you like.
Anyway, I apologise for being a boring bastard haha.

30th April 2024 at 11:00 am #214271One example that is completely wrong on the website that you are looking at is that is says Jon Macken sighed for Preston for £1.75 Million. That is complete rubbish and a made up figure.

30th April 2024 at 11:03 am #214272I think the main difference is that my site has Stam coming technically in the 1997/98 season and signing for £10.75m but the other has him coming in the 98/99 season. I think its a technicality as Stam was signed in 1998 on July 1st haha.
