I have absolutely no idea who I’d take Ed. No would not take Jose as he is finished but I’d take conte all day long.
4 elite managers for me and anyone after they is a huge step down.
The problem is we have it so good at the moment as we really were in the shite until Klopp came. I really think we are screwed when he leaves. Anyone who comes in is a step down. Absolutely love the way we play but it won’t last forever.

11th January 2022 at 2:53 pm #193253No I get that Sean. Given a choice, I’d always take a tough, winning ugly manager (Conte, Mourinho) over a soft, losing beautifully (Poch, Wenger) manager. Had we not been through that with Mourinho, I’d have probably been all over Conte and I think the club would have been also. But he left such a dark cloud hanging over the club, that I think they (and many fans) were reluctant to go down that route again. I can totally understand their reluctance.
Obviously, someone like Ten Hag is a massive gamble, but so is risking another scenario like the one we had with Mourinho where we had to pay him off and were left to pick up the pieces, despite a couple of trophies. But if, and it’s a massive IF, Ten Hag could work, with the right setup he could be very good. He might also be terrible. But we’ll never know unless we take a gamble. With someone like Conte, we know we’d be decent and competitive for a couple of years then looking for another Conte type of manager. It’s unsustainable unless you have the kind of structure Chelsea have, where they function very well despite a revolving door of managers.

11th January 2022 at 3:08 pm #193255I think a Ten Hag figure would work best after a period of turmoil at a club where expectations drop off and the job almost becomes a free hit for a manager. A bit like when Rodgers came into Liverpool. The problem is we’re now closing in on 10 years since Utd won the title, so the pressure in the background is increasing. And the money is still there to throw at it. It’s almost like the club need a crisis off the pitch to reset things on it. They’re just drifting at the moment between two tracks of being patient on one hand and impatient on the other. It would actually make better sense for Utd to have gone down the Conte route because that would better match their business in the transfer market. Should have blown the bank with Conte, then got Ten Hag to pick up the pieces 😁

That’s arguably what we’re witnessing right now under Rangnick to be fair! Would probably not be the worst thing in the world (for Utd) if we stumble to 7/8th and the big egos all decide they’re not up for the Conference League. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Lingard, Martial, Pogba, Ronaldo, Cavani, Bailly, Henderson all leave in the summer.
Arguably a blessing in disguise. The last thing a new longer term manager would want is players not up for the fight who don’t want to be there. There’s some serious wages to come off the wage bill with the aforementioned players, too.

11th January 2022 at 3:27 pm #193257So Rangnick’s gone in to turn things upside down? I could have done that Ed. Not bad work if you can get it 😆

12th January 2022 at 7:07 am #193270Wouldn’t be too surprised to see a few games resheduled though, what with all the Kloop-varient COVID postponements etc… 🙂 …don’t like it when there’s no footy on the weekend! I have to read a book or something… or maybe just color it in…

12th January 2022 at 7:26 am #193271According to reports the FA will block any attempts to play postponed games during the Winter break.
Sean, the Winter break has been around for a couple of years but it didn’t happen last season due to the disruption of the season by Covid.

12th January 2022 at 7:38 am #193272That’s just silly… I reckon just about every team in the Prem has had a “mini” winter break of some sort over the last month or so… then we stop for a couple of weeks… and then everybody complains about have a fixture pile up when it all starts up again…

12th January 2022 at 7:45 am #193273“When does the 2021-22 Premier League winter break take place?
The 2021-22 Premier League winter break will take place between January 23–February 7, 2022.
There was no Premier League winter break in 2020-21 due to the compressed season caused by Covid-19.
Will all Premier League players get a break?
Though the break applies to all Premier League clubs and players, there are several who won’t get a full break as it takes place during several international windows.Because of Covid-19 impacting the World Cup Qualifying schedules, there will also be double round of fixtures in the South American (CONMEBOL), North and Central American (CONCACAF), Asian (AFC) and Oceanic (OFC) confederations to take place in January and early February–during the Premier League winter break.
The likes of Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah will be participating in AFCON during the break, while Alisson will be on duty with Brazil.” Goal.com

12th January 2022 at 7:51 am #193274“The FA will block any attempts to reschedule postponed Premier League games during this month’s winter break.
The governing body were forced to scrap the break last year due to the compressed fixture list but fought hard for it to be re-introduced this season. As a result, there are no top-flight matches scheduled to take place between January 23 and February 7.
The postponement of 19 Premier League matches over the last month due to Covid outbreaks means some clubs now have multiple games in hand on their rivals.
The FA will not allow Premier League teams to play postponed games during the winter break
The blank weekend on January 29-30 would be an obvious time on which to play, but the FA are reluctant to give ground as they want England’s players to be rested ahead of next winter’s World Cup in Qatar.
FA sources have pointed out that they have already shown flexibility by scrapping FA Cup third and fourth-round replays for the second successive season to free up two midweek dates.
The governing body is keen for the hiatus – from January 23 to Feburary 7 – to be respected

The Premier League have no plans to use the winter break to clear the fixture backlog, but that could change if more games are postponed — or if some of this weekend’s FA Cup third-round ties are called off.Four Premier League games have now been rearranged for the midweek nights of January 18 and 19.
But the FA have a prior claim on those dates if third-round matches are called off, so some may have to be moved again.” Daily Mail
