Brilliant result playing with 10 men against 12.
Ref let way too much go for Arsenal (how long they took taking set pieces, their players going down too easily, the soft penalty that shouldn’t have been given, Saliba fouling one of our players in a build up with no card received, Bruno being mugged from behind and not getting a free kick on the edge of their box, many of our players receiving soft yellows whilst the same doesn’t go the other way).

It was ridiculous from the ref not to clamp down on. If a keeper takes his time taking a goal kick or a player takes his time taking a throwing at the end of the game, they are rightfully booked for time wasting.
This Arsenal side are like a Jose side.

12th January 2025 at 8:10 pm #217281Anyone except Arteta sees that Arsenal are in dire need of a prolific striker. Havetz and Jesus are not the answer to their goal-scoring problems. They are crating enough chances but are only lacking finishing touches. You can’t rely on Saka, Odergard, and Martinelli. They are facing the same problem that Chelsea is facing, and worse, they have lost their best player to injury.
Hats off to Amorem and United; they have been superb in the last two games; maybe United have not turned the corner? a bit too early, but the signs are there. they are finding their feet defensively, and the way they defended today, was master class.

12th January 2025 at 9:21 pm #217282Martinelli’s definitely a forward. Sterling in example and Havertz are wingers me believes as their natural playing position. Goals elsewhere have a little bit dried up along with confidence and swagger and no doubt, the absence of Saka is felt.
I never liked the notion “false number 9”. When I watched football for example in the 90s, there was actual Strikers set up to purely focus on putting the ball in the net. Granted, there was some the would place themselves deep and go out of their way to make things happen, but this subject repeatedly comes up when Arsenal struggle.

12th January 2025 at 9:24 pm #217283Always preferred personally some of Wenger’s teams of previous more than Arteta’s. Imagine if Wenger had players like Odegaard, Gabriel, Rice, and Saliba in one of his teams? Santi Carzola missed. Remember Giroud too?!

12th January 2025 at 9:48 pm #217284I don’t think Havetz primary position is a winger; I think his best position is where Odergard is playing, which is the no. 10 that floats behind the striker. That is where he was deadly when he was at Leverkusen. Since he joined the Premier League, he was turned into a false nine, which he is not. If you were Arteta, would you have sacrifaced Odergard and played Havertz in the 1O? I don’t think so, and he is trying to prove that Havertz is a success. Time will tell, though.

12th January 2025 at 10:18 pm #217285You will be able to judge from a Chelsea perspective better than me, re Havertz. Personally, I thought he was better suited as the ‘last man’ and with the link up of Mason Mount.
I would play him right up top, but of course, he needs to be getting the service which obviously is down to the style/patterns of play and those around him able to deliver.
For me, you have to form a bit of a partnership/telepathy at least between 2 players; Striker and the guy that’s going to spot his runs and feed him at the right time.
It helps if you play a formation with 2 Strikers together, but these days, hardly any teams employ that and tend to go with a 3.

13th January 2025 at 9:04 am #217286Unfortunately the villain Havertz resurfaced. Of all the Arsenal players you would expect to bottle it in a penalty shoot out it’s Havertz. No idea why they would put him under that sort of pressure. He fails more often than not. He will always be remembered for that 2021 CL Final goal and fortunately he came up trumps on his biggest day as a Chelsea player. He is not a Centre Forward so why keep playing him there. Chelsea did it, Arsenal do it. Another that fails constantly is his mate Werner. They both need to venture back to the Bundesliga and resurrect their careers where they are much more successful.

13th January 2025 at 9:45 am #217287Everytime I watch the Goonies play, they seem to be set up to a) win free-kicks so they can go with one of their “rugby” style set peices… 5 men run towards to the ball, 4 to block and 1 to head… (amazed they get away with it as often as they do!) or b) keep it tight and rely on a little piece of magic from one of their “better” players…
It will get them Top 4, as they do have some of the “better” players who can provide such little moments of magic, but it will never win them the title… not in the Prem at any rate. Too many other well organized teams who can “low-block” and keep them at arms length…
(They’ll bet us 6-2 on Wednesday now, you watch! LOL!!)
