It appears the ludicrous handball rule is to be changed according to Gary Lineker
Speaking to chaps at my Cardiac Rehab class today and without exception they all, including United fans, thought the rules are complete tosh.
This rule absolutely has to change.

Once again the ref was poor.

Adlab, you are wishing he backed your view and therefore clinging to a headline, without understanding what that headline actually says. You are conflating someone saying VAR should only intervene with clear and obvious errors with ‘it wasn’t handball’ he clearly goes on to state that it is subjective and also said “Was it correct in law? Perhaps if he’s [Coote] is refereeing his opinion is [Grealish] has made himself bigger, and his arms are in the air, and it is an unnatural position.”

Clearly if he also says the law needs to change to clear handball up then he is not saying that under the current laws of the game it is not a penalty – otherwise the laws wouldn’t need to change!

The problem with “handballs”, and the same as “fouls” too, is simply the decisions are subjective…. offsidess, for example, it’s either offside or it isn’t… (in theory, obviously VAR still make a mockery of that one too!)… but for handball/fouls… was it intentional handball or accidental handball? Was their enough “force/illegality” in the tackle to make it a foul?

VAR is only going to “prove” it hit the hand/arm, or in the case of fouls, if contact was made… it’s still down to the poor sod in black to decide whether the incident in question deserves a whistle or not… VAR isn’t really going to prove that or not, especially in slo-mo mode…

Personally, I think the peno was very harsh on Wee Jack… I don’t think the “intention” was there even if his hand was, he was jumping up trying to head the ball and had the ball headed onto his hand more than anything else…

Maybe is was correct by the rules (but the rules is an Arsenal at the moment)….

In fairness, VAR didn’t give the handball, and we don’t know what the conversation was between them. It’s not unreasonable to suggest they had a chat and worked out the ref missed it completely. It wasn’t clear from the original camera angle, and he was blocked by some of the players.

Once he goes over to the monitor it is ultimately his decision.

I’m not against handball for making yourself bigger, I must be one of the few who think it is handball if a defender blocks a shot with his hands if they are out wide. So unless they allow that I cannot see how they can make the law any clearer or simpler. Any further tweak, which includes making yourself bigger by having your arms out, unless you wear light blue, will clearly make it more complex. They will need to include a dulex paint list with what shades of blue are exempt.

I think what did it for Jack was that:
1. He only hand one arm up. The one that was in the flight path of the ball.
2. AWB also had his arms up initially, but lowered them well before he made contact with the ball which then shows that Jack could have done the same.

Unlike City fans I can say we got away with one there. However, if that is handball how does that help your case that Grealish’s isn’t?

Ironic that the pundits state that if your arm is close to your chest it’s a penalty, but if your arm is out wide it’s not a penalty.
