Any sort of banning or punishment will have a reciprocal effect on all leagues, clubs etc. So they need to negotiate as there’s no going back now. I under stand greed is involved but that applies to all, the current beneficiaries of current leagues domestic and Europe are worried about their loss of income and even your sports pundits and commentators, greed is a 4 way street.

19th April 2021 at 7:34 am #177693No I agree that they should do that Pagan. I just don’t for a minute think they have the balls to do it.

19th April 2021 at 8:01 am #177694Before we become too judgemental let’s remember the Premier League was founded as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from the Football League, founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.
Following the statement being released now is the time to take a step back and for all interested parties to sit down and sensibly find a way forward.
I don’t believe that the Club’s will go ahead with this without coming to some sort of amicable agreement with their domestic League or that it is to the benefit of all those domestic Leagues to ban their major Clubs this is not just a PL problem it is a problem that effects all the major European Leagues.
As the Ed said “Surely the threat of expulsion from domestic leagues and International competition (for the players) is enough to stop this ever getting off the ground. The question is how realistic that threat is. I suspect the PL would find it extremely difficult to carry through the threat and see the biggest 6 sides drop out.” The same applies to La Liga and Serie A.
What is required now is cool heads and lots of discussion.

19th April 2021 at 9:22 am #177695Nine…if you remember i predicted this some time ago. What has triggered this is the lack of good management by Fifa,UEFA FA and others. FFP rules that are are vague lack of real responsibility to players health. I am not saying the new league would bring it any better but it was the trigger. Rights or wrong have yet to be defined when we know more about how it will operate, particulrly for fans. Let us make no mistake though this has come about by the ineptitude of the organising bodies of the game, they have not moved with the times, it is over managed and you only have to look back at Blatter and Co and World Cup venues
It will be interesting to see if PSG wins this years CL when the other three are all break aways!!!!
ON a personal view, I think it would need more clubs for it to be successful but the breakaway have been planning this for some time so they know where the dangers are and there are plenty
This is also a reason why I have always said the CL Cup will be de valued in time so it never excited me, much preferred the English game of EPL and FA Cup
The breakaway will eventually include teams from the USA, Japan, India, Korea and China? That is when the Super league becomes Global. like it or not guys…it will happen….I am off to to the local park team!!!!

19th April 2021 at 9:28 am #177696Nine….as to the threat to players…..the FA would face huge legal arguments on employment rights if they tried to force this, you simply cannot refuse a person the right to work if he/she is successful in an application to work for somebody else. The fact they worked for a rival organisation is not good enough, wake up FA..it happens in your own organisation!!!

19th April 2021 at 9:39 am #177697So JP Morgan have admitted they will be financing this new league. The Americanisation of
footballsoccer is upon us. I can’t help but feel that football, as we know it today, will look very different in a few years with different rules, more goals, bigger wages, more money. I also can’t help but feel the discontent/disgust coming from traditional football fans will mean nothing while ever there is a generation of football fans that won’t care and will happily tune in to Inter Miami vs Real Madrid when the scope widens even further to global “franchises”._____________________________

19th April 2021 at 9:51 am #177698Personally, there’s nothing to feel excited about. I’m not bothered about Inter Milan v Liverpool.

19th April 2021 at 9:53 am #177703All right, numpties???
Had to pop in see what you lot think about this…
First of all, I’m disgusted with the whole notion, never thought I would agree with Neville on anything (purely on principle) but I’m with him 100% on this…
But I don’t see how they can be stopped… I think this will be happening and will be very pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t happen.
I doubt the fundamental rules of the game are likely to be changed, and would fully expect it to be expanded into 2 (or even more!) leagues to cater to all the “global” teams that I’m sure will get involved further down the line.
Anyway, trust you’re all well and fighting fit…
(And just to recap, Maureen out, VAR out, what a shite season, Levy out… π )

19th April 2021 at 9:59 am #177705I’m really excited about watching the closing stages of the CL every single year. I’m not going to lie. I love watching the best go up against each other.
However, with the ESL, they’re missing the point. What’s great isn’t the fact that 2 historically huge European clubs are playing each other per se but the fact that the best sides in their respective leagues are coming face to face at a time when they are performing well in their own league. Take Utd vs AC Milan in the Europa League recently. Yes, 2 huge sides with tons of history and trophies. Was it entertaining simply because of that? No, if I wasn’t a Utd fan, I’d much rather have watched City vs PSG. 2 sides flying in their own leagues. Neither have the history or trophies/prestige (call it what you will) that Utd/Milan have but they’re simply better sides at this moment in time.
This format deprives us of that, simply ensuring we watch the same sides face off every week without any fear for the consequences of underperforming.

19th April 2021 at 10:02 am #177706A Footydebate first. Something we all unequivocally agree on.
P.S. Great to see you back Chucky. Hope all is well despite the difficult season at your club.

19th April 2021 at 10:10 am #177707Spot on Ed.
As Iβve said several times over the years, watch the film βOnce in a Lifetime – the extraordinary story of the New York Cosmosβ, the story of the early franchises in the US in the 1970s to see the blueprint of where this is all going. Huge money, big stars, TV deals, playoffs, run up penalties, cheerleaders, etc.

19th April 2021 at 10:35 am #177712Sean, I think it’s the European Clubs Association. Without looking into it further, I’m not sure what they do or stand for.

19th April 2021 at 10:54 am #177716John W Henry I’m led to believe is one of the main guys directing this.
Now the Priorities become clearer than ever in this Pandemic. I don’t think any young Liverpool fan in their 20s will ever get to see Liverpool at Wembley in an FA Cup Final. It’s finished.
None of these owners understand the British Culture, the Geography and the Rivalry. They’re going to rip this all apart for money.

19th April 2021 at 11:15 am #177726The new Champions League format to be announced today be interesting to see how it differs apart from founding Members can’t lose their places.
My suggestion would be take it all to CAS and let them sort it all out.
