The Premier League have released a statement following reports a European Super League will be announced on Sunday night.
Premier League condemn European Super League Big Six announcement
The Premier League have released a statement on the European Super League. The statement read: “The Premier League condemns any proposal that attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit which are at the heart of the domestic and European football pyramid.
“Fans of any club in England and across Europe can currently dream that their team may climb to the top and play against the best. We believe that the concept of a European Super League would destroy this dream.
“The Premier League is proud to run a competitive and compelling football competition that has made it the most widely watched league in the world. Our success has enabled us to make an unrivalled financial contribution to the domestic football pyramid.
“A European Super League will undermine the appeal of the whole game, and have a deeply damaging impact on the immediate and future prospects of the Premier League and its member clubs, and all those in football who rely on our funding and solidarity to prosper.
“We will work with fans, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA, as well as other stakeholders, at home and abroad, to defend the integrity and future prospects of English football in the best interests of the game.” Express
Lots of problems ahead imo!

18th April 2021 at 6:07 pm #177643Football is a sport for fans but is now big business to the owners. There’s your conflict right there. This looks to be more than a threat. It looks more like a demonstration of who holds the power now.

18th April 2021 at 6:25 pm #177645Mikus, I’m disgusted with Chelsea’s involvement but I can’t help thinking this is what happens when you get investor owners who are all looking for returns on their investment.
This is going to get very nasty if it develops further any changes to the set up of football on a European basis should be done in cooperation with all the relevant FA’s Leagues and UEFA not by declaring UDI.

18th April 2021 at 6:34 pm #177646A problem here is that the premier league, as part of their defence, imply that “any club in England and across Europe can currently dream that their team may climb to the top and play against the best.” But the top 5/6 clubs now rarely change. I’m not defending the big clubs, just stating the reality we now have. With the start of all the money in the premier league, they’ve basically lost control of the monsters they created. As for the timing of this, the match day fans still wield a degree of influence. But there are no matchday fans at the moment. So they get easily bypassed.

18th April 2021 at 6:34 pm #177647Ding Ding I’m on the bus, F**k you!
If this happens then the top clubs will lose what makes English football so good, travelling fans, the away day becomes prohibitively expensive. The whole English game will either implode, or if we’re lucky become what it was, the people’s game.
I’d be happy to see them exiled from all domestic competitions, leagues and cups…..Pagan

18th April 2021 at 6:35 pm #177649The Premier League have been joined by UEFA and other top leagues in Europe in condemning proposals of a European Super League. Reports claim an announcement will be made on Sunday night that the Big Six teams in England have signed letters intending to join the new proposed league.
Current league leaders Manchester City have agreed to the proposal along with Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.
The Mail claim the league represents an American takeover of elite European club football.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is said to be the chairman, with Liverpool owner John W. Henry, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke and United owner Joel Glazer as vice-chairmen.
An announcement is expected at 9.30pm on Sunday evening. Express 17/04

18th April 2021 at 7:14 pm #177652So does this mean they want be part of the EPL, why can’t they still play in their respective domestic leagues and be part of this Super league, the squads are big enough. Players could interchange, the EPL without those teams will be like a wilting flower. It would be more top football for us to watch.

18th April 2021 at 7:17 pm #177655It would appear that is impossible, Blaze, after the joint statement issued by FIFA, UEFA, PL, EFL and similar authorities in Spain and Italy.

18th April 2021 at 8:01 pm #1776599, how many PL clubs have to vote for something for it to be passed? If it’s only 14, they could vote on on any club indicating setting up another league can be expelled….Pagan

18th April 2021 at 8:04 pm #177660The Premier League are condemning it. What about the Supporters? Long time Season Ticket Holders for example or Joint Consultant Committees? Do these people get a say?
American Owners just want to make money – that’s all they’re in it for.
Me personally with all honesty, I don’t get that much of an excitement watching even the Champions League since it was taken out of Terrestrial TV and until the contest reaches the Semi’s.
I like English Football and the English League and competitions such as the FA Cup. If this goes ahead, this is me done with the game.

18th April 2021 at 8:14 pm #177662Welcome to the global game, games played at times to suit the targeted audience, not to bad for the Far East market but terrible for the matches aimed at the States.
Matches played in China, India the USA etc. Fans a secondary consideration, the TV audience is the main market with all the sponsorship and advertising revenue it brings.
Problem is without the fans, both home and away there’s no atmosphere and eventually the spectacle ceases to be. Would be funny if it all went tits up and the domestic leagues refused to take them back…..Pagan

18th April 2021 at 8:23 pm #177664It’s destroyed Pagan.
One of the few traditions in life I’m hoping that will be retained. To be fair, it’s been talked about for quite some time.
That’s it really. Me done with it. Test Match Cricket is hanging in there. Snooker’s in a very good place. Maybe I’ll follow the Premier League without those teams.
American owners just hoovering up money and putting it into their Baseball Teams.
They don’t care about us.

18th April 2021 at 8:33 pm #177667Hahaha Pagan mate, give me some credit lol 😀
They’ll be no other team. I just want things back to how they were; supporters, home crowds, Liverpool signing players and pushing on.
I don’t understand the timing of these proposals when we’re looking at the moment in reintegrating supporters back into the stadiums.
There surely needs to be put forward some fight, but ultimately, money will talk.
If they reshape the top flight like the old school First Division without my lot and the other 5, we’ll find a way to adjust.
