Commiserations Ed.
Unfortunately United bar perhaps Cavani didn’t turn up and Emery had Villarreal very well organised in the knowledge that United have a weakness against teams that defend deep which Villarreal did almost to perfection.
Exciting penalty shoot out but it’s always a lottery when the game reaches that point.

27th May 2021 at 8:22 am #179713Ole is going no were but conte is free now abd he’s the best manager available out there.
He’s a real winner abd would do a great job at Utd or spurs
As nine says he falls out with owners and seems to have happened at inter again

27th May 2021 at 8:33 am #179714That’s the problem with Conte Sean, great Coach but he will always be short term because he always gets into a war with the Board wherever he has managed. I dreaded his Chelsea press conferences in his second season at Chelsea.
Zidane resigned yesterday too.
United won’t change Ole though he’s got at least next season.
Howe for Celtic?

27th May 2021 at 9:25 am #179715At least we lost to the winners 🤣🤣
Hard cheese Ed and Dr NickNot the best game mainly down to the how villareal set up and played
They never really tried to go for it and win but when you are a smaller team less fancied etc that’s what tends to happen and United can’t break teams down for toffee it’s counter attack or nothing
Fernandez goes missing on yet another big game ? Was he just flogged for death all season or is it more?
Such an important summer ahead for so many teams with players and managers during a euro summer and covid fall out for cash 💰

27th May 2021 at 9:30 am #179716One word. Incredible!
I was sort of hoping that Manchester got both trophies. I was well asleep and couldn’t quite believe it when I heard the result this morning.Ed genuine bad luck although I would have expected United to beat them based on what I saw of them against Arsenal.

27th May 2021 at 9:53 am #179718AnonymousVillarreal deserved it but only just, also that was a definite penalty they should have gotten the shot was on its way directly towards goal and the United defenders arm was hanging out. And judging by the penalties taken they would have scored it.

27th May 2021 at 10:31 am #179719That was one of the best shoot outs I’d seen for a while as it just kept going on beyond the natural 5 but tense. Feel for De Gea.
It is a one off game and a bit of a lottery, but my only criticism would be the game plan of Ole. So many times this season, they’ve come from behind after conceding.
This time round however Villareal held their own and forced a shootout. Cavani for a senior pro was a real standout. It’s not so much the criticism of individual players, but for big games, they don’t have Leaders to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

27th May 2021 at 3:26 pm #179735Ed…I was dissapointed that Pogba and Fernandes did not do better, neither could work out how to pass and open the Villareal defence. I put the loss down to them more than DeGea….Given a choice no keeper wants to take penalties…except Ederson!!! He wants to be No 1 penalty taker!!! I hope he is right. Always maintained no Pro should miss from 12 yds with a free hit.

27th May 2021 at 7:42 pm #179744Nine, ye but conte would transform Utd into real winners. I’d be genuinely worried about Utd with conte much more then ole. Utd season collapsed againest Leicester. Contes cv is highly impressive. Brilliant manager

27th May 2021 at 7:48 pm #179745Sean, yeah I agree with that, Conte may well have a two year sell by date but I think United’s would progress far quicker under Conte over that two years than they will under Ole but I think rightly or wrongly it’s most unlikely that there will be a change of Manager at United within the next 12 months at least.

27th May 2021 at 11:46 pm #179751Just back on the penalties. The problem with keepers they preampt which way they think the ball is going to go instead of rather standing your ground and then making an attempt, did you see how many penalties went straight down the middle.

No I agree Brian. I don’t blame De Gea at all. He’s always been rubbish at saving pens so that’s on Ole.
Sean, I wouldn’t want Conte. It would be like bringing Mourinho in again. Organised, defensive football with no focus on development of academy players. I’m sure we’d win things under him until it all came crashing down but what then?
Right now, I can’t see an obvious alternative to Ole. Add to that the clear (albeit gradual) progress in the league, there’s no real reason to get rid of him right now. I certainly wouldn’t want Zidane, Pirlo, Poch and they seem to be the only big name managers seemingly available. Makes zero sense to get rid until there’s an obvious replacement available. It’d be one thing if we were rubbish in the league and not getting anywhere in the cups. Then you get rid regardless. We’re falling short at the final hurdle a lot, which is a mentality thing. It would be incredibly harsh to get rid if him after this season. Utd don’t really work like that, rightly or wrongly.

28th May 2021 at 8:06 am #179757But oles football isn’t exactly brilliant either Ed. You look at some Utd ganes againest the top teams abd they were dreadful this season. Very negative in some games. No plan to attack. What is utds style of play ? Are they just a counter attacking team??
Very good point about conte and young players though chum. The amount of players he signed they were in their 30s at inter was crazy.
Ye I agree ole should not be sacked but that final just showed me how clueless he can be. There was no attempt to win it in extra time. People say the bench was to weak to make changes but a good few players on the bench were oles signing. It’s a final that had to be won againest an average side.
Yet you can say he is close as it reminds me of klopps 1st few seasons. Progression in the league and getting to semi finals and finals. They were one pen away from winning the cup. It really is fine lines. He conducts himself well though ole. Players seem to be happy under him. Be interesting to see how he gets on next season

28th May 2021 at 9:16 am #179758I’d agree with that Sean. 2nd and a penalty away from winning a cup, not a bad season and it would be a knee jerk reaction to think of getting rid of Ole over it. Utd team has issues with creativity when facing deep defences and they now know what they have to do to sort it out.

I don’t think we’ve been that bad. We were the better team against City away, held our own away to a rejuvinated Chelsea, comfortable against PSG away, smashed a good Leipzig side 5-0, knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup and were the better side, easily beat Spurs away, smashed Leeds etc.
We were awful against Arsenal in both games. I’ll admit that. Spurs at home was a freak game where we got a ridiculous red card which destroyed us. They’re the ones that stand out
The games we’ve been terrible in have been the Sheff Utds, Crystal Palaces, West Broms of the league. We were unbeaten away from home which has only been done by 2 sides in the history of English football. What killed us were the 6 home losses, 2 of which came after we had already secured second place and had nothing to play for. We were terrible at home to City, but City weren’t great either. Which big games are you referring to?
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think Ole is the man to win us trophies but I genuinely can’t see a better option out there right now, hence why I think getting rid of him would be totally pointless. We haven’t been great but only City have been better than us. A lot is being made of Liverpool’s injuries at the back (as a reason why Utd got 2nd) but Liverpool were looking very shaky at the back way before VVD got injured.

28th May 2021 at 1:22 pm #179767Can’t argue with much of that Ed but the two games v Chelsea were dreadful aswell. Utd made no attempt to win the game at home. Two awful games.
Liveroool away from home when we had Henderson and fabhino at centre back. Again no real attempt to really have a go at us
City at home in the league. So 6 big games I can count were utd got no goals
In fairness all defences haven’t been great this season apart from cities and Chelsea’s did improve. Liverpool actually conceded less goals then Utd which is very surprising
Ye I think utd were the 2nd best team this season without a doubt. No real injuries to key players throughout the seadon
As I said it’s really a fine line. One Ken and it would have been a very good season for utd
