I suspect Pep’s brief is to win trophies which isn’t necessarily consistent with giving youth a chance.
This was the brief at Chelsea up to now but circumstances and who the Manager is and who his Assistants are has changed that and we are beginning to see the fruits Christensen, Tomori , James, Loftus Cheek, Mount , Abraham and Hudson Odoi and there are others coming through behind them too but it may mean a period of no trophies and the owners and the management have to buy into that.
It’s easy to criticise Pep for not giving youth a chance but go through the starting 11’s of the top 6 at the weekend and leaving out the 4 Academy players who started for Chelsea v Wolves you can probably count the Academy starters in the other teams on the fingers of one hand and that’s been consistent for a while now at Chelsea and the rest of the top 6.

18th September 2019 at 2:33 pm #47689Mikus, I think you are reading too much into this. I think Sancho wanted to move on, probably did not see many opportunities to break through, City had to play him or let him go to be fair to the lad. It may well happen to Foden although somehow I doubt it but we will see. Other youngsters coming through, some out on loan with Championship clubs, the Academy is producing, eventually some will make the squad. There is no time limit on these things other than they get a bit older. Experienced staff, not just Pep I am sure review everyone of them on a regular basis.
I am also sure this is not unique to City. In my view the investment is and will continue to be the right thing to do, plus other clubs will benifit from the experience from players that do move on.
Last…UEFA, FA etc…if they continue to pile more games per season they will have to allow clubs to increase there squads and I think this should be with Academy players not expensive signings or even non nationals…just a thought_____________________________

18th September 2019 at 3:01 pm #47690Swedy Ed-You can forget £100m for JC,United were prepared to pay close to £120m last season and were told where to go by Dortmund. He just looks so comfy with the ball, like players of the ilk of Hazard,D.Silva,Mbappe,Messi,Modric, etc do.Fantastic player no doubt about that!

18th September 2019 at 3:33 pm #47692If that is the brief for Pep of just winning trophies then this academy stuff is effectively just all talk from the chairman and I don’t really see the point of such things if they’re just going to ignore these talents or are unwilling to start bedding them into the team.
Things may well be rosy now for City but there will be a post Guardiola time at the club, and they may well then rue all these young academy talents they’ve tossed aside. Because as we know, you can’t always guarantee top players coming out of your academy. You have to make the most of them when you get them because they will fight for your club like no other player will. And yes other clubs have been guilty of such things, but that doesn’t make it right just because others are doing similar.

18th September 2019 at 3:56 pm #47693Mikus, academy players having loyalty and fighting for you like no other may have been true in the past, but may not be quite the same now. If he knows no other club, in that he hasn’t been out on loan then yes I would agree, but if he’s been out on loan a couple of times then maybe not so much as it then just becomes another team he’s playing for…Pagan

18th September 2019 at 4:30 pm #47697Don’t know Pagan. The two Chelsea lads Mount & Abraham have been at Chelsea since the age of 7 spending the next 12 years in the youth set up. Ok, they’ve had a few loans more recently, but I’d wager they’d still very much feel a strong affinity to Chelsea. I think a few loans are fine and can obviously help bring players on, but at the same time I do think that such players can just be shipped out on loan because the club just aren’t that interested in them and don’t quite know what else to do with them. And then the loans get more frequent and longer and before you know it, the player unsurprisingly starts to fall out of love with their club. Indeed it’s only because Chelsea have their ban they’ve *had* to take interest in their academy players. So really the clubs are the problem here as we know because they are usually transfixed on the short term, not the long term.

18th September 2019 at 6:24 pm #47699Look at the players Foden has in front of him. Very difficult to get into that side. Maybe when Silva goes then he will get more of a chance.
Young players just need chances. It’s fantastic to see the 3 young lads with massive affiliation performing so
Well for Chelsea. No one would have predicted Abraham scoring 7 goals already

18th September 2019 at 6:44 pm #47700Okay, Half-time and I think it’s fair to say the better team is losing…
No fizz at all in the Spuds play, and if the Greeks had their shooting boots on, they could have had two or even three rather than the one they have.
Too many “new” faces in the team who aren’t up to speed, Davies, N-Dumb, Ali, even Wee Lucas, all look a bit rusty and why on earth is Sanchez playing FB again? Weirdy Beardy “rested”? He’s played one sodding game all season!!!

18th September 2019 at 7:14 pm #47705AnonymousCan see Spurs losing this we are not City or Barca we don’t have that quality on the bench. Get KWP on for Sanchez , rotation is ok but at least make sure the player actually plays in that position FFS

18th September 2019 at 7:19 pm #47707I think Ponch underestimated to Greeks big-time, little walk in the park, give some minutes to some rusty players (or resting them for Leicester on Saturday?!?)… that’s backfired!!
Still more goals in this I reckon, and I know which end looks more likely too!
