“Patrick Bamford has recieved his first England call-up while Trent Alexander-Arnold has been immediately recalled to the squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers, but Mason Greenwood is a surprise omission.
Gareth Southgate has, by and large, stuck with his Euro 2020 heroes but Liverpool full-back Alexander-Arnold was called straight back into the fold after missing the tournament through injury.
The right-back has been sharp in the opening two games of the new season, bagging an assist in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Burnley at the weekend.
Leeds striker Bamford was in contention to make the provisional squad ahead of Euro 2020 after a superb first season back in the Premier League, but did not make the cut.
Greenwood, meanwhile, is not included, despite a fine start to the campaign with Manchester United.
The 19-year-old, who was also ruled out of the finals through injury after being named in Southgate’s provisional squad, scored against both Leeds and Southampton but is not in the group for the World Cup qualifying triple-header against Hungary, Andorra and Poland.
Jesse Lingard is included despite having just missed out on the final Euro 2020 squad and having his start to the season with Manchester United disrupted by Covid, while Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden are injured.
Neither of Arsenal’s new summer signings Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale are included, the former having contracted Covid and the latter slipping back down the pecking order after the return to fitness of Burnley’s Nick Pope.
Neither Eric Dier not Dele Alli have earned recalls, while this camp has come too soon for their Spurs team-mate Oliver Skipp.
Tammy Abraham has also been overlooked, despite a strong start to life at Roma, with two assists on his debut following his move from Chelsea.
Southgate, who will face the media this afternoon, will be relieved that captain Harry Kane’s future has been resolved before the start of the camp, sparing him questions about the saga.
England visit Budapest a week on Thursday and host Andorra at Wembley on Sunday, September 5 before playing Poland in Warsaw three days later as they aim to reach Qatar in winter 2022.

30th August 2021 at 11:56 am #184084We’re stuck with boring Internationals for 11 days, but in fact, these are World Cup Qualifiers that are important. I guess it’s revisiting out experience from June and regrouping that squad.
Hungary first up on Thursday.
