Brian, I thought that point of time as far as England were concerned, they have a handful of good cricketers to be able to choose from.
I could read out the team sheet off the top of my head.
There was Gower, Lamb, Robin Smith, Chris Broad in the 80s, then the time of Gooch, Atherton, Alex Stewart, Graeme Hick…
Australia had a great side in the early 90s, Noughties too – miss Shane Warne and Alan Gilchrist.

8th June 2021 at 9:53 pm #180216Good for you Nil..go for it.. I hold the view that top order batsman, even in a 50 over game should know how to build an innings, maybe less on 20/20 which is another form of Baseball to me, absolutely anti cricket. How people find it exciting baffles me

9th June 2021 at 8:18 am #180219Botham and Willis were amazing in the 80’s they almost beat the Aussies on there own in 1981 who can forget the Headingley test in that series.
I remember as a kid going to the test matches at the Oval and Lords and being allowed to sit on the grass around the boundary.
Love the Test matches particularly against the Aussies a mate of mine treated us to an Aussie test match at Cardiff a couple of years back great banter with the Aussie players near the boundary and the Aussie fans all grouped together with their Aussie hats on.
England need Stokes back brilliant Cricketer.

9th June 2021 at 11:39 am #180220Great read Nine.
Yeah, true about needing Stokes back. I think he had a Thumb injury or something.
There isn’t that much of a change or disconnection as such, albeit Sky which is a similar matter when it comes to football to try and encourage a greater audience and engagement.
An unfortunate now society habitat of social media and everything picked up on that otherwise makes individuals to be more reserved on their own nature and personality.
We just need that spark and spirit to come through and bring out joy and excitement which is what has been lacking.

9th June 2021 at 3:16 pm #180221An American friend once asked me about test match cricket over 5 days and what the value of it was. I told him, to think of it as a physical game of Chess and there are lots of games with the game itself takeing place, watch good batters build an innings, watch good bowlers do good line and length bowling over a period, watch the keeper display acrobatics but above all try and work out the strategy of each captain. He was still baffled. Patience is required and commercial sport to day no longer has that

9th June 2021 at 3:40 pm #180223Test Match Cricket imo is very strategic and tactical Brian I think you probably have to played the game at Club level to really appreciate it. I love it.

9th June 2021 at 9:06 pm #180225Brian, it looks as though I finally understand what you’ve been alluding to on your closing sentence of your last reply.
If I’ve understood rightly, the emphasis in the now society is measured on commerce than the actual pleasure of the entire 5 days.
Cheers

10th June 2021 at 12:32 pm #180231Although not really scoring as heavy with the balls received, Silby and Burns so far have held their own and gradually building the scoreboard. Encouraging to see so far no wicket loss and hopefully a good precedent set.

10th June 2021 at 10:21 pm #18024220 over cricketers!!!!! Not test match players. If you like T20 that is OK but we are now playing full TEST matches…which as it says on the Jar…is a TEST. I guess we have nobody else unless we can get some out of retirement!!!! Pathetic, Pitch was OK bowling nothing exceptional, looks like our bowlers will have to perform with ball and bat!!!!

11th June 2021 at 2:18 pm #180265303 to chase.
Broad has a Latham’s wicket that’s broke the partnership with Conway. We need to this guy out and one or two in quick succession that will place us in good stead to try bowl out New Zealand.
Optimistic about this.

12th June 2021 at 5:21 pm #180317All the good work before Tea, and now a complete shambles.
Our opening batsman really set the wrong precedent. Either that or NZ bowlers are on something!

12th June 2021 at 6:57 pm #180322Nil, the simple facts are we have been outplayed, outthought by a NZ “B” team and credit to them, they concentrated on the game and what needed to be done, we did not. The team was poorly balanced not enough character and poor captaincy . The Aussies and India will have whitewash in mind if we do not get some serious playersof quality for test matches in. Well done NZ fully deserved. Time we had a new captain as well

13th June 2021 at 7:34 am #180336Letβs face it, cricket in this country is a minority sport, played in general by posh kids. Cricket is seldom played in state schools now due to rules and regulations regarding teacher to pupil recommendations to stop kids getting hurt.
The local club gets approximately 100 kids down to the ground to junior training night, the vast majority of these are under 11 years old, with most of them being under 9, the ones in general that improve the most and stay in the game after 12/13 are those who play cricket at their private schools or have parents that are involved in the club.
When my youngest first went to county trials, it seemed I was the only one there that didnβt turn up in a Range Rover, the parents cricket associations, the clubs kids play for and which school they go to seems to play a big part in who gets through. Those that get through without having the required background work harder and generally seem to be better players.
From those that go on to play at the highest level, the big financial rewards are on the T20 circuit, so thatβs what they hone their skills to do, maybe to improve national team we need to be looking elsewhere than the superstars that have made their names in the short format game…..Pagan

13th June 2021 at 11:59 am #180346I didn’t realize there was only 2 test series. Maybe that’s not a bad thing. England need to bucker up their ideas.
The top order batsman need to be change.
It is embarrassing to say the least.

13th June 2021 at 12:01 pm #180347Brian, yeah true. India play NZ next. That should give us indication where England are and just how far we’re behind in gulf of quality that we’re short of.

14th June 2021 at 4:35 pm #180439If we do not get some real cricketers in and a decent Captain I cannot see us winning any Test match. “not the time to panic”says Root, agree with him…sack the lot, panic over.

15th June 2021 at 2:00 pm #180462No short term fixes to this and I think Pagans right we’ve got to get kids playing cricket at School ideally from Primary School age with soft ball cricket.
I know it was a long time ago but I went to a very dedicated Sports School even the playground had multiple cricket nets ( and multiple goals in the winter) so each break time the majority of boys played football or cricket and Wednesday afternoons were dedicated to House Cricket and Football and Saturday afternoons were dedicated to Inter School Cricket and Football and it was an honour to be selected for your House and School to represent your House and School at Football and Cricket.
You have to fall in love with the football or cricket from a young age to continue playing at Club level after School that’s what the School installed in me and the School had a work hard play hard philosophy where Sport was considered almost as important as your education.
The Government needs to get stuck into this otherwise we will continue to go backwards.
I get where Pagan is coming from re private schools but none of Botham, Root or Stokes went to private Schools. The main thrust of this must come from the Government whether it be across State Schools or Private Schools.
