You didn’t just call Gerrard a prima-donna?
As for the tohers, I don’t think that’s fair on them either. Lampard certainly wasn’t. Terry may be dislike-able but, again.. Nope. Scholes was in my opinion vastly over-rated but a prima-donna? Nope.
These players all performed at club level, so that label doesn’t hold up.

12th September 2019 at 2:46 pm #47356Probably first time I’ve ever heard of Scholes being overrated! IMO you only need look at what the likes of Pep and Co said about Scholes to realise he was IMO underrated for large parts of his career. The very fact he was shunted out to the left wing for England as probably the best passer of the ball England has ever produced is evidence of that.
Not intending to get into any pointless Scholes Gerrard or Lampard debate either. Merely susprised at anyone who thinks he was overrated

12th September 2019 at 3:47 pm #47365Mak, I was referring to “Mr Knighthood” Beckham.
I don’t have time for that guy.
Ashley Cole was definitely in that bracket.

12th September 2019 at 6:30 pm #47377AnonymousAs a Liverpool fan, I’ve heard SO many times of just how much better Scholes was than Gerrard and Lampard. We can avoid that discussion but it would be hard for him to be under-rated given the waves of incredulous things I’ve had to listen to for years.

12th September 2019 at 7:21 pm #47378Mak, Gerrard was absolutely brilliant so you won’t be hearing me banging on about that debate. It’s a pointless one IMO. The three were completely different players and all had their own strengths. I’m sure many Utd fans feel the same way you do about Scholes, that they’ve had to listen to for years about how much better Gerrard was. That’s football fans for you.
Despite what Zidane said, Scholes wasn’t IMO a complete midfielder. He couldn’t tackle. He wasn’t very versatile in a positional sense. Gerrard was much more complete in that sense. Scholes wasn’t a match winner either like Gerrard. That’s not to say he didn’t massively contribute to Utd winning matches but he didn’t have the ability Gerrard had to single handedly win matches. Keane was more in the Gerrard mold than Scholes in that sense.
But when someone like Xavi says his one career regret is not having played alongside Scholes, it frankly baffles me that anyone can think he was overrated. He didn’t seek the limelight like many others in his generation. Didn’t threaten to leave to get a new contract. Didn’t even have an agent!

12th September 2019 at 7:30 pm #47379I’ve often described them both like this:
Assuming both were in their prime. If I was given a manager’s role and told I could buy one world class player and nobody else. I had to make do with the squad I had. It would be Gerrard every time.
If, on the other hand, my chairman said “go out and buy yourself a brand new team. Money isn’t an object” . Scholes would be one of the first names on my wishlist to build a team around.

12th September 2019 at 11:38 pm #47388Sean, it was basically something in public that leaked out when he was working for Unicef. I used to like Becks, but then realised after he retired, a lot of his involvement in the public eye were simply for his own personal gain.
I think what’s come about this in most recent times and the World Cup last year is something unique and not seen before.
Southgate being a Manager – somebody genuinely clean-cut and players selected on merit who want to play. It’s made me think about the past and a lot of things that wasn’t so good, yet we all went along with it.

13th September 2019 at 1:38 am #47390AnonymousFair enough Ed. I can only speak of my own experiences and encounters but there’s always been a huge rivalry between Liverpool and Utd here in Ireland. The vast number of fans here supported one or the other club, with a smattering of other supporters. You complimenting Gerrard is just not something that I would associate with the kinds of Utd supporter that I am kinda referencing in my experiences.
Rivalries aside though, I also didn’t really watch Utd a huge amount. I think on surface level they had other players who were stealing the plaudits and creating the headlines. I never really wanted to look at the great Utd sides and see what made them tick maybe beyond Keane and Irwin. I could appreciate them maybe because they came from the same City that I grew up in. If I were to go through the whole experience again, maybe I’d take note of Scholes more. The comparison between players never did any of them any favours.
As for Beckham, I didn’t think much of him early on in his career. It was quite a while before I realised that he was actually a dedicated professional. Once you realise that, it’s hard not to respect someone on some level.

13th September 2019 at 1:20 pm #47411Haha possibly the most debated debate in the history of debating (within the English football game at least!).
Gerrard was the best physically, Scholes technically and Lampard intelligently. So a 3-way draw!
When you look back at the team England did have it is a wonder how they didn’t win tournaments.
