I’ve luckily got some footage and highlights etc from those World Cups and there was a Maradona Documentary too. All on VHS – need a converter so I can upload them onto You Tube.

26th November 2020 at 4:40 pm #170918Waspy-You are spot on re the Italian league, now just consider what the real Ronaldo had to go through. He was constantly in danger of being broken in half, defenders literally tried to break his legs every game.Yet he tore them to shreds every week-hence him being called the Phenomen.Diego was indeed the GOAT,for me anyway.

26th November 2020 at 6:01 pm #170922442, with regards the handball, is he anymore of a cheat then Owen, sterling or whoever have dived to get England pens?
I’m Irish . Do I remember Thierry Henry as a cheat ? No not all . Brilliant player
Get over it mate. When someone dies and is a great sporting figure, remember him for the positives not a handball that happened decades ago.
What do you remember George best and Gaza for ?
Ridiculous giving so much coverage to a handball incident that occurred 34 years ago when the chap has just died.

28th November 2020 at 7:38 am #170951AnonymousSean, as I said, it wasn’t just the handball that was cheating, it was the performance enhancing drugs and bans from football for substance abuse that can be included in that. Including the substance Ben Johnson was disqualified for from the 88 olympics….
Lance Armstrong was the best in the world and a cancer survivor and several time winning of the Tour de France but is a disgraced drug cheat.
Maradona was a Cracking player but banned from football twice with positive tests. So yes, I stand by a filthy no good cheat.
Gaza, wasted his talent and career. See Raul moat episode
Best, before my time and don’t care about players who throw it all away. There are plenty of better players who don’t do what best, maradona and Gaza did.
Maradona is an iconic cheat, like the Russian Olympians who juiced and any other star who has taken performance enhancing drugs. Given his track record I suspect he was on marching powdery long before the test and tracers were in the game.
So sorry I don’t share your view.

28th November 2020 at 8:09 am #170952I don’t think Maradona ever took drugs with the objective of enhancing his performances which is completely different to Lance Armstrong. In 2014 he said “I gave my opponents a big advantage due to my illness. Do you know the player I could have been if I hadn’t taken drugs?”
Drugs like Cocaine ruins lives including the lives of loved ones it’s an illness and history tells us how hard it is to break away from.
Maradona did a lot of things in his life that he wouldn’t have been proud of and looking back I’m sure he would have gladly changed most of them but when he stepped on to the football pitch he was regularly magnificent as players like Gianfranco Zola who played with him confirm.
Maradona was truly loved by the people of Argentina as the scenes in Buenos Aires yesterday confirmed whatever his flaws may have been he was a magnificent footballer one of the very best the world has ever seen, some would argue even the very best the world has seen that’s what he’ll be remembered for and rightly so.
Yes he was a flawed diamond but it’s very hard to live with the kind of adulation and pressures he lived with without some flaws.
Rest in Peace Diego.

28th November 2020 at 9:00 am #170955Maradona, Gazza, Best, not drugs cheats, drug addicts. Players caught up in their celebrity rock and roll lifestyles, some players are totally disciplined in their profession, others get caught up in a party lifestyle. Fortunately clubs are now far more aware of the trappings of the distractions that are out there and now educate and intervene where they see problems.
I’m sure that had we had the intrusive media we have nowadays in the late 60s and 70s, many of the icons of that era would have a tarnished legacy…..Pagan

28th November 2020 at 9:20 am #170956When is the last time you have watched that England abd Argentina game 442 mate. I’m talking about the handball that the English media had on their front page the day after he died and skys disgraceful coverage of it
Watch that game again and the English players were an absolute disgrace. Half of them would have been sent off today. Feb wick elbowing maradona in the face. Hodge and Beardsley disgraceful cynical fouls. No idea how fenwicj even stayed on the pitch. He was absolutely battered and kicked up and down
Peter Stilton talking about cheating lol he cheated on his wife ffs which is much much worse.
Loved watching the reels off maradona over the last few days. Absolutely loved watching him and the wc in 85 was one of the best
All about opinions though 442 mate and I always respect yours

28th November 2020 at 9:05 pm #171079In fairness, Shilts was effectively the keeper involved in the controversy of the Handball and he Captained England that day. He’s standing by what he feels and he’s remained consistent.
I don’t know why Television Coverages would place Spotlight in accentuation on one specific incident.
Diego liked a World away from Football, but cared dearly for his Family. He got into the wrong crowd sadly that got hold of him.
Nine, Perfect Summary mate.

28th November 2020 at 9:09 pm #171080The cheating side of him is ultimately rooted in the clash of cultures. The Latin American culture in that sense tends to see cheating as “getting one over on authority” – they’ll do anything to win, if that means cheating, then in their eyes it’s perfectly legitimate, it’s part of doing anything to win. But doesn’t that just sum up why England have often failed in big tournaments? They’ve either not been good enough or the other team simply wanted it more. The cheating element of it allowed itself to be used as an excuse, when really, the reason was the other teams wanted it more. That’s not to advocate cheating, just to point out that such things were not really the root cause of our failures over the years but just served as useful excuses for defeats.

28th November 2020 at 9:39 pm #171089Mikus, that’s an interesting take on cheating a culture. In some cultures playing fair is promoted, in others it’s anything goes and it’s up to the officials to spot it. Yes I suppose that’s why England aren’t serial winners, you only need to look on this forum, when Jose wins by negative tactics, it’s anti football, it’s only good to win if you win with style…..Pagan

29th November 2020 at 12:01 am #171109Brilliant Maradona documentary on Channel 4 tonight, mainly about his time at Napoli. I’ve seen it before but recorded it again tonight. Well worth getting it on ‘catch-up’.
Forget the ‘hand of God’ thing, (nearly) all players cheat, he was an absolute genius of a footballer.

29th November 2020 at 6:11 am #171114AnonymousSean and others, sorry to keep going on.
Last post from me on this. The hand of god… I really don’t much worry about englands failure to perform at world cups. Perhaps they should take ephedrine like maradona did.
Maradona was banned from football in the 94 World Cup for ephedrine. It was combiNed with five others. It is a performance enhancing drug outlawed by the ioc back in the 60’s/70’s. Other sports followed in banning it.
It is not a recreational drug or used as such. It is also dangerous to a users health.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/football-players-death-linked-to-ephedrine/#app
So yeah. I remember maradona for being a brilliant player but he was a cheater like Armstrong and anybody else who takes performance enhancing drugs.

29th November 2020 at 1:04 pm #171143I was listening in the build up to the Liverpool game on 5 live, the tribute paid to Maradona firstly, and how Footballers in general are wrapped in a bubble and never really are given ‘the tools’ as to how to handle all the success, the pressures, the setbacks, and the ‘after life’ of it all.
Isn’t there a common denominator surrounding the examples of footballers (not all) and popstars/performers/musicians when placed side-by-side.
The most high-profile have left us in recent years; whether it has been George Best, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Prince. And these ones named have been drug or alcohol related.
Now with Social Media, for a young guy or girl to be dealing with all the adulation. I do think though there is more awareness, more support and in general you’d like to think more care and attention. Still can’t believe Caroline Flack taking her own life earlier this year.
Maradona was battling with his own demons and at the same time still wanted to be that Great and perform at the optimum thus injecting these enhanced drugs. He was founded out by authorities, punished and served his time accordingly.
I for one hold good memories of him being inspiring, charismatic, mischievous at times, but most of all, his footballing ability on the pitch, and his desire, drive and determination.
