“Every time just like the last
On her ship tied to the mast
To distant lands
Takes both my hands
Never a frown with golden brown”RIP Dave Greenfield.

5th May 2020 at 7:48 am #108199Premier League clubs will wait with bated breath for the next pronouncement of the German chancellor as much as that by the British Prime Minister as the plans to restart football remain delicately balanced.
Before PM Boris Johnson addresses whether lockdown measures are to be relaxed in the UK later this week, German leader Angela Merkelβs update to her nation is expected to confirm whether the Bundesligaβs hopes to resume on May 16 are viable.
Germanyβs tentative moves towards behind-closed-doors league are a source of optimism for those Premier League clubs most in favour of completing the current season.
Equally, any bumps in the road in the European countries which are a few weeks ahead in emerging from the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic will be seized upon as evidence of a premature haste to host games, even without spectators.
Monday appeared to bring mildly encouraging news as Germanyβs professional football league (DFL) said it has registered 10 positive results from 1,724 coronavirus tests carried out at the 36 clubs in its first and second divisions.
Those tests were taken ahead of a planned start of team training at the clubs. While no positive tests are welcome, it raised hopes that players and club staff will be able to proceed with fixtures should they be permitted.
However, there are notes of caution.
The case of Bundesliga side Cologne brought into focus how precarious the situation is. When three of their players tested positive for the coronavirus last week, it seemed the Bundesligaβs plans would be pushed back further.
Cologne announced on Monday there were no additional cases at the club following weekend assessment, but became embroiled in a public disagreement with one of its own players, Belgian Birger Verstraete, after he publicly voiced his disquiet at the restart plans and said his βhead is not on soccerβ.
He was told to apologise for an βemotionalβ interview, in which he had also stated he thought it strange only the three unnamed players were quarantined, not the whole squad.
Merkelβs announcement is expected on Wednesday, and there will be obvious ramifications for English football.
Many will want to use the example of Germany as proof England can follow suit. Whatever difficulties encountered in the Bundesliga with testing, or further infection, will enable executives to reasonably assume what will happen in this country.
The Premier League is hoping to restart once permitted by the Government and health officials, a decision edging closer following stakeholder meetings as the country emerges from the peak of the pandemic.β Daily Telegraph 5/05

5th May 2020 at 8:14 am #108223“Some level of social distancing will remain until a coronavirus vaccine has been developed, even though the government is working to restore peopleβs lives to βas close to normal as possibleβ, Michael Gove has said.
Mr Gove warned that people would have to live with βsome degree of constraintβ for many months and suggested the British public would have to accept a βnew normalβ going forward.
His comments came as the UKβs official death toll from Covid-19 rose to 28,446 on Sunday.
βUltimately, unless and until we have a vaccine then I suspect that we are going to have to live with some degree of constraint because of the nature of the virus,β the Cabinet Office minister said during the daily press briefing.
βBut we obviously want to, wherever possible, and consistent with the measures on public health, restore people’s lives to as close to normal as possible.β
If Social distancing remains in place it’s difficult to see how the Government can give the green light to football resuming.

5th May 2020 at 10:14 am #108320I know, just do peno shoot-outs instead, and then you can do the whole bloody lot in one day at one venue!
It’s getting rediculous right now, unless YooUtd of course are allowed an extra peno each shoot-out, and the oppo’s goalie has one arm tied behind his back, then it will be brillinat!!

5th May 2020 at 11:10 am #108362Instead of using the toss to decide ends let’s just use it to decide the games and it’s all sorted.
What a joke it all is now and trust Taylor to add to the nonsense that’s why he’s worth Β£2.5m a year not!

5th May 2020 at 12:09 pm #108416The new normal means supporters going to, entering and being seated in football stadiums won’t be allowed or happen simply because the 1.5 metre rule can never be followed. Find a vaccine quick or supporting football, as we know it, will never happen again.
Pleased to see statistically things have improved across Europe. Long may that continue. Bless you all.

5th May 2020 at 12:55 pm #108448I don’t think we will see fans in Stadiums until we are on top of this virus whenever that may be and until we have a vaccine. I suspect the whole of next season might be played in empty Stadiums.
As for the return of the PL in June rightly or wrongly I think it may well happen now there seems to be an anyway, anyhow, anywhere strategy driving the decision makers at the PL and the Government seem keen to get it up and running too, to provide what they see as a bit of a morale boost for the Country.
How it’s possible to justify the need to self distance going forwards for the population in the UK which there clearly is which seemingly will be in place for some time v players climbing all over each at corners etc will be interesting to hear.
Similarily with Roy Hodgson who according to Government guidelines at 72 should be self isolating at home and not going out as per the rules for 70 plusses yet he will be back on the training pitch and managing Crystal Palace?
Different rules for football v the general population?
But there seems to be a determination to get football back on no matter what in England although perhaps not in Scotland and with that philosophy without something dramatic happens it looks more likely to restart now than not currently but every day is a new day.
Truly frightening:
“The UK now has the highest death toll in Europe from coronavirus after new official figures revealed that more than 32,000 people have died from the virus.”

5th May 2020 at 3:04 pm #108528The whole thing is nonsense. Playing, for us, 26.3% of the season on neutral grounds, win or lose is absolute, utter nonsense. I just have no interest. And for some it is just plain and simple unfair.
Then there is the little matter of health and safety. Can somebody explain this. There is a match. Say City v Arsenal. After the match a player from each side tests positive. In theory the other twenty odd players, coaches etc should isolate. There is another game for each team in 4 days time. Who plays? Etc etc etc. The whole thing is bonkers._____________________________

5th May 2020 at 3:06 pm #108531It is a sad state of affairs Nine when football takes such priority with the media and entertainment business, they should be ashamed of themselves. Football; clubs have no divine right to survive when there are many other business going to the wall. They have to take there chances like any other business operations. There will be some good companies going out of business and they should be part of it if they cannot find a way to survive. I grieve for them more than football clubs because I see hard working families trying to make a success for themselves.
As to topping the league in deaths, I am not a strong believer in most of the statistics because it is never a level playing field when all the benchmarks to produce figures and probably there is always a possibility many will not be recorded as such, so, for me another meaningless statistic unless you are one of the unfortunate families. I would add, even when the numbers get lower it is noticeable that TV and papers do not see that as some kind of progress because it is taking away there main theme of negativity, The lower figures still represent the worst possible moment for some families though. Concentration and effort must be to Zero, maybe the 200 million for one player and 500k a week should be axed and the money transferred to say research which is much needed_____________________________

5th May 2020 at 3:09 pm #108534Adlab,, you are right of course….I would have tended to respond by saying “poorly thought through” but it is not…they did think it through but with only one scenario….get the started It is disgusting I am on the brink of stopping football altogether if they do start too soon. They are irresponsible lunatics and the people making these decisions are probably living in mansions somewhere

5th May 2020 at 3:29 pm #108550Brian-Without a vaccine or a cure nothing will get sorted, instead things/people will just go around in circles, because the same thing that happened in Germany will happen across the planet:as soon as you allow few people to get together,it will start speading again, then those people will infect their families & friends, and you will have another wave, then another, etc.
As 9s said it,without a vaccine or a cure, football the way we knew it wont be again for a while,we need to accept that._____________________________
