I suppose the silver light in the darkness of co-efficient bullshit would be that Chelsea wouldn’t qualify either… 🙂

22nd April 2020 at 6:38 pm #97095Tbh I’m not bothered either way Chucky I would have gladly accepted a EL place at the start of the season given all of Chelsea’s circumstances then and I wonder whether we will see any European football next season anyway with Clubs zig zagging across Europe.
But without the whole season is null and voided for everyone I can’t see UEFA being able to use Co efficients.
Be a shame to see Leicester lose out on a CL place and Sheffield United a EL place though. Still all as clear as mud imo.

22nd April 2020 at 6:47 pm #97097Mute point cyber chum, I always thought it was entirely up to the FA to nominate the four teams for the four spots awarded to them (hence all the talk about FA Cup winners etc…). UEFA can’t actually pick the teams.
But need something to talk about… 🙂

22nd April 2020 at 6:59 pm #97100Yeah you’re right Chucky.
Of course were it to happen and the City appeal is delayed they would appeal their ban coming into force and Spurs would lose out too.
All bonkers and I reckon Chelsea’s best chance of a CL place is still if they call the season as it stands now. 🙂
Watford reach agreement with players over wage deferral.

22nd April 2020 at 7:04 pm #97101Still think it’s a bit weird that the Spuds and Goonies (and the same with your mob and LiVARberoOol’s) got the same co-efficient points despite being in different comps…

22nd April 2020 at 8:28 pm #97115I think (might be wrong!) that’s something to do with the wins and draws on the way. Barca actually got 30 points, LiVARberoOol’s 29, City 25…

23rd April 2020 at 10:27 am #97253ESPN follow up piece on the UEFA Coefficient Rumours.
“We’ve heard many weird and wonderful ideas appear about how to resolve issues if the coronavirus crisis means domestic seasons across Europe cannot be completed. But sorry, Arsenal fans, don’t get excited. Unless you finish in the top four, you won’t be playing in the Champions League next season, whenever that will be.
One of the whispers out of Tuesday’s UEFA video conference, held with all 55 national associations, was that European places could be decided purely on UEFA’s club coefficient, a system that ranks clubs based on their European performance alone over a five-year period.
In such a scenario, England’s Champions League spots go to Liverpool, Manchester United … and ninth-placed Arsenal. Tottenham Hotspur, who are eighth in the league, would take Manchester City’s place, due to City’s ban for financial fair play violations (pending an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, of course).
Leicester City and Chelsea, who sit third and fourth in the Premier League table respectively, would be dumped into the Europa League with Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Sheffield United would be denied their first-ever European campaign in a cruel twist following a fine season back in the big time.
Arsenal won’t be able to find a backdoor route into the Champions League next season.
But that misfortune is nothing compared to Belgium, where Club Brugge sit 15 points clear at the top and are to be crowned champions; they are ranked only fourth by UEFA’s coefficient, so would merit only a place in the Europa League third-qualifying round.
In Spain, sixth-placed Atletico Madrid would take the place of Real Sociedad; Atalanta and Inter would lose out to AS Roma and Napoli in Italy; Lyon and AS Monaco would take places off Marseille and Stade Rennes, who have never played in the Champions League, in France.
In Germany, RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach would be replaced by Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke. AZ Alkmaar, who are only second to Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie, would lose their place to PSV Eindhoven.
But wait! All of this just isn’t going to happen. It’s pie in the sky. It was the suggestion of one league representative, and while it might get traction in places, sources have told ESPN that UEFA is adamant sporting achievement should govern who plays in Europe. It’s up to the leagues to suggest a formula and UEFA will offer guidelines. This may be made official when the executive committee meets on Thursday.
All of which is why UEFA is so against the idea of null-and-voiding seasons, preferring instead that leagues are played to a conclusion or places awarded on merit.
These stories give great headlines, but rarely stand up to scrutiny. It is not that the idea has not been floated and could not be used in very specific cases. But for an association in full as a blanket rule? Not a chance. — Dale Johnson”

23rd April 2020 at 11:06 am #97273“Politicians and player representatives last night warned of the major obstacles that still exist before sport, and especially football, can resume.
Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, suggested that a coronavirus vaccine might be required before stadiums are fully reopened to fans while FIFPro, the world players’ union, warned that players should not be pressurised to return before they feel safe.
Various proposals and scenarios have been discussed in football leagues across the world, with Premier League clubs having been told that the 2020-21 season must start by the first week of September.
That deadline suggested that the unfinished Premier League season could not be resumed any later than July, with clubs having looked at June 8 as a possible start date for matches without fans. They are also exploring plans for players to again train from May 18 by initially working in small groups.
Culture secretary Oliver Dowden said that he was in talks with the Premier League, but Sturgeon is concerned that matches even without fans would create a risk. “If a match is still on TV, the danger is people will congregate,” she said.
Audio Football Club 20/04/20
Sturgeon also cautioned that “some sort of social distancing” could be necessary until a vaccine becomes available. “We want to get a semblance of normality back to people’s lives but we can’t risk a resurgence of this virus,” she said.“I know that is not good news for people who have sport as a really important part of their lives but it would be wrong for me to give false expectations about an early resumption of large-scale sporting events.”
The Government has already faced severe criticism over allowing the Cheltenham Festival and Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid to take place five weeks ago and there is concern at the prospect of rushing players back.
Speaking following research which has shown a sharp increase in professional footballers reporting anxiety or depression symptoms, FIFPro chief executive Jonas Baer-Hoffmann warned clubs and governing bodies of the many challenges ahead. FIFPro is also in talks with the World Health Organisation about necessary protocols.
“Football in the end is a contact sport and we can run individual laps around pitches but that has nothing remotely to do with the kind of training that would be needed if you were to consider playing a league competition again,” said Baer-Hoffmann. “That has very high protection standards. I think we also have a strong responsibility. There is a huge logistical and of course scientific question around testing and quarantine protocols but also a tough societal question: What point have we reached in terms of care of those most at risk and most affected when it comes to testing and also with hospitals?
Everyone is eager to get back to grounds like Anfield, but players’ reps say mental health is a concern if football is too hasty.
“Are we sending the right message to society when we start again and does that encourage a healthy return or does that maybe send a bad signal suggesting that football has different rules than the rest of the world?”Following a survey of more than 1,600 players from 16 countries, including England, FIFPro found that 22 per cent of women players and 13 per cent of men reported symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of depression. Eighteen per cent of the women and 16 per cent of the men also reported symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of generalised anxiety. These figures, for March and April, had roughly doubled compared with a similar survey of players in December and January.
Asked if getting football restarted as soon as possible was the remedy, Baer-Hoffmann said: “If we were to pressure players back in an environment where they may feel their health and safety is being put in danger then it would add to their anxiety and their concerns.” Daily Telegraph

23rd April 2020 at 2:02 pm #97360Whichever steps UEFA take they will be criticised. The Club Brugge situation highlights the folly of the coefficients.
“However, it is understood a meeting of Uefa’s executive committee determined that on-field performances this season up to a league being suspended should be the deciding factor.” BBC Football

23rd April 2020 at 3:05 pm #97391UEFA expect to hear from each of their 55 member nations on how they intend to declare the 2019/20 season over.
Developments in Holland and Belgium have moved the debate on as it becomes clear that the current season fixtures can’t be completed safely.
Football has been suspended across Europe, with the exception of Belarus, for five weeks with UEFA gradually moving towards the realisation that the current campaign can’t be completed.
Many player contracts end in June, the transfer window is due to reopen with next season’s domestic and UEFA competitions getting ever closer.
A pan European solution is now viewed as impossible with UEFA ready to consider ‘Self Certification’ on a country by country basis to determine next season’s entrants to the Champions League and Europa League.
According to L’Équipe, the secretaries general of the 55 federations have been told that countries unable to resume the season should write to UEFA explain why they are unable to complete their campaigns.
Each case will be studied on an individual basis, with no threat of sanctions.
And UEFA are expected to lay out today what leagues should do in the event that seasons cannot finish.
The governing body will explain the criteria for determining the entrants for next season’s Champions League and Europa League.
The French newspaper states that voiding seasons is not an option, nor is simply entering last season’s participants and on-field performance up to the point of suspension will be the guiding principle used in competitions that cannot be completed.
The board of the SPFL has been given approval by more than 80% of clubs to award this season’s divisions based on average points per game.
Last week Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers were awarded the three lower division titles, on the same basis Celtic will be awarded the Premiership title.
Neil Lennon’s side have picked up an average of 2.67 points per game with Steven Gerrard’s side in second place with an average of 2.31 points per match. L’Equipe.

23rd April 2020 at 5:26 pm #97453I was just out there in a little walk around my area and kids are playing with each other. All from different families. Really pisses me off that you keep to the strictest rules yet other people just don’t give a fuck
People gathering in beaches and parks again in England. Over here people are passed off, I understand that but rules are rules.
Still 12 days to here but people are getting very complacent now and they don’t care about others

23rd April 2020 at 6:59 pm #97495I understand why people are getting complacent. I dont know about everybody else but I am getting really fed up staying at home day after day apart from taking the dogs out and the odd trip to Waitrose (no problems with supplies etc in our local store).
Im fed up with TV and fed up with the news. AND WE ARE LUCKY IN WHAT WE HAVE.
There is only so long that people can put up with this before there are serious mental health issues.
On top of this the furlough scheme is creating a bubble round many but it can last forever. Soon tens of thousands may be losing their jobs as companies go bust. With no other prospects people have to claim benefits which in so many cases I come across at Citizens Advice leads to mental health issues.
The govt has a difficult balancing act. Ease the lockdown a little and get the economy moving but in doing so risk more spread of the virus or keep things broadly as they are for a few more months.
Imo something has to be done to lift the economy and peoples mindsets.
How UEFA and others believe football can start soon beggars belief. Imagine one staff member say at Liverpool has the virus and passes it on to a couple of others. What then? Play a mztch v Wolves? Impossible! Also employers have a legal health and safety obligation towards employees.
Incidentally how do you keep a social distance from a corner particularly when somebody is pulling a shirt? And then a couple of hours later you go to the supermarket and have to keep 6ft apart. Playing even behind closed doors makes little sense!_____________________________

23rd April 2020 at 11:01 pm #97605AnonymousAdlab, you’re spot on, we need something to go back to. However, the problem is wider than us being confined to binge watching Netflix. The US Job data says 26 million have applied for welfare. Couple that with this.
The FT is reporting that “5000 US meat and food processing workers have been infected with the virus. Ten have died.”
That is a significant disruption to a food chain. If haulage workers get sick, thats an even bigger challenge again. If farmers and farm labourers get sick, that becomes a substantial issue. You know they bus bee’s around the country to pollinate plants and flowers.
“Markets for Pollination Services Actually Go Back 100 years
“Johnson (1973) suggests that the first recorded renting of colonies for pollination in North America was in 1910, while Lindquist (2016) states that the first bees were rented for pollination in New Jersey in 1909. Olmstead and Wooten (1987) indicate that plum and prune growers started renting hives for pollination services `beginning around World War I’ and that their success led to the development of similar practices by growers of other fruits and nuts. Rucker and Thurman (2010) provide accounts of migratory beekeeping for the purpose of following the bloom and producing honey going back to the 1870s and suggest that there were commercial beekeepers who “were mobile, migratory, and large by the 1920s” (p. 9). They also provide several accounts of the provision of pollination services for pay in the 1920s, noting that many of the accounts are from California, and the extent to which the practice was widespread at that early date is unclear.”
As I noted before, those looking for a supply and demand classroom illustration could do worse than spending some time with the bees.”
If you get large numbers of hungry unemployed people, it becomes a significant challenge that is a far bigger risk to society than the virus.
Sadly, we cant really do any more than heed the advice to stay Inside. If you have a small garden, might be worth buying some chickens and turning over the grass for a vegetable patch. That is if you can get to Ann open gardens centre to buy seeds.
