“No Pax, I don’t know if Rees-Mogg and other politicians have made donations, but that is my point. Nobody appears to be asking them, so why ask about footballers?”
But it wasn’t a question about what charitable donations footballers are making Hightown the question arose because Spurs were furloughing their staff at the same time as paying their players hundreds of thousands of £’s a week. And the panel were asked was it right given those circumstances that the taxpayer should be funding the Spurs staff whilst their players were being paid hundred of thousands of £’s.
This whole issue has been taken completely out of context nobody disagrees that footballers should be singled out over their charity donations but that wasn’t the question.
Tbh I don’t think anyone should be questioned about their charitable donations even including the likes of all of us on here.
As Pagan rightly said earlier “What an individual does with his wealth is between them and theirs conscience.”

20th April 2020 at 2:59 pm #96307Nobody doubts that many footballers do a lot of good work. Look for example at James Milner to name but one.
The issue here is imo that if you are paid £10m a year and sitting at home and your employer is in difficult times as is now, would it be such a hardship to be paid at the rate of £8m a year for the time you are doing nothing(Kyle Walker apart) given that those who pay their wages are having and more to the point will be having such a hard time.
Its not about charity work and giving we all do that to a greater or lesser degree._____________________________

20th April 2020 at 3:21 pm #96308Premier League footballers should “take a pay cut and play their part” during the coronavirus pandemic, says health secretary Matt Hancock.
Quote from Hancock on April 2nd

20th April 2020 at 3:50 pm #96310Mav, Branson is worth a lot of money, but that isn’t cash in the bank, it’s assets, he’s asking for a loan from the government that he will the pay back……Pagan

20th April 2020 at 4:59 pm #96311Pagan is correct here. Branson’s wealth is in the value of assets owned not so much in cash..
Also back to football ownership the Glazer family wealth is mainly property based.
At this point property assets not the best. I note from my pension funds some proprty funds are suspended as values are difficult to establish.
The point I am making, maybe not as well as I could, is that many v rich people may not be cash rich and their assets reduced in value._____________________________

20th April 2020 at 5:38 pm #96312“We fully accept that players will have to be flexible and share the financial burden of the Covid-19 outbreak in order to secure the long-term future of their own club and indeed the wider game.
“Our advice going out to players at this point reflects that expectation.” PFA statement April 2nd.

20th April 2020 at 5:56 pm #96313Wasn’t the pfa response after Hancock’s comments
Nine, if you think Hancock is doing a good job then fair enough. From an outsider looking in, I think the uk looks a bit of a shambles.
He comes across as arrogant and had two major fallingsvout on tv last week. One meltdown over what the exit strategy is going to be.
Premier league players questioned hancocks comments. It was only to do with question time. Did t he say it at one of his press conferences aswell?
I’d your happy with a man like that being your minister for health then that’s your progarive
I tvibk people are getting defenceless because it’s all a bit of a shambles yet again from a uk government especially after the mess of brexit
Your prime minister shaking hands with sick people. Just crazy stuff
I am glad he is better though. He was very very silly

20th April 2020 at 6:21 pm #96314Sean, forget what Hancock said that came out of the Question Time question.
The PFA statement reflected a realisation of the problems gripping football due to the pandemic and not just in the PL look at what’s happening at Roma and Barcelona etc.
As I’ve said previously I think we reacted too slowly in the UK to the lockdown and I’m not saying Hancock hadn’t made mistakes I’m sure he has but Government policy is being driven by Scientists as it should be in such a situation.
How’s it going in Ireland Sean? I read they were struggling a bit for test kits too.
I’m not sure of the wisdom of getting too political on here even us all trying not to fall out about the football is sometimes a bit of a challenge.?
If there were any easy answers to all this mate we wouldn’t be where we are now with this across the world. Stay safe buddie and all your loved ones too. Cheers 9’s

20th April 2020 at 6:34 pm #96317But it seems the scientists are getting it wrong nine. They say the uk peaked before lockdown ?? In fairness governments are dammed if they do and dammed if they don’t mate. Politicians just puss me off
Ireland is very much like everywhere else nine. Some bad decisions bigtime. I can’t get over how bad our nursing homes are here.
People are not helping either. Most are following the laws bit I think
We are getting complacent. At least another two weeks in lockdown and it be interesting to see how we are fixed this day two weeks chum chum

20th April 2020 at 6:36 pm #96318MPs get A salary of approx £82k whilst the PM gets about £160k, yes that’s well paid, but it’s probably harder work than kicking a bag of wind round a field, and a lot of football players earn more than and MP does in a year in a week.
It’s very easy to snipe at the people making the decisions, however there’s a lot of people out there wanting to mark their homework, but very few wanting help them do it.
……Pagan

20th April 2020 at 7:19 pm #96319Pagan, alas, this is increasingly the problem with democracies. Many good people I fear are turned off from going into politics because of the constant bashing they get by 24 hour rolling news and social media, as well as the increasing pressure by many who see the state being able to solve all our problems.

20th April 2020 at 7:52 pm #96320You don’t employ a Lawyer mate and then ignore his legal advice the Scientists are the experts on this but they’re not infallible and all the Governments all over the world are basing their decisions rightly or wrongly on the advice the Scientists are giving them.
I just want to see everyone come out on the other side of all this Sean. Be it the UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France, the US or Japan etc etc etc.
Unfortunately we’ve all still got mountains to climb. Stay safe buddie. Cheers 9’s

20th April 2020 at 8:12 pm #96322I’m just saying what I read nine which totally contradicts my point of not reading rubbish ? . I didn’t meN for it to come across as gospel.
So many mistakes have made by all the higher Peers would anything really surprise you these days nine?
The WHO said this virus could not be transmitted by human interaction in January.
My point is , a lot of the specialists in their fields are getting a lot wrong.
Anyway, I’ve said my piece about all this. You guys are more educated about your government then I am so I take on board what you say

20th April 2020 at 9:06 pm #96324No I think you make some very fair points Sean mistakes have been made but there’s no right or wrong way with all of this we are all sailing through pretty much unchartered waters. Let’s just hope and pray it’s all over soon. Take care buddie. Cheers 9’s

Cheltenham went ahead too.
The uk govt response at that stage was wash hands and sing the national anthem. The titanic had hit the iceberg by then.
China has locked down another city. The oil industry is potentially done for and most economies are tied to it.
The uk is needing its new found authoritarian ally turkey to make ppe equipment.
The uk response has been a disaster knowing what it did back in January. Our prime minister could have killed off the government.
There will be no end of season at this rate. There might not be one next year either.
Clubs backed by petro chemicals dollars might also be hit hard.
I wish everyone the very best of health and ongoing luck. Companies are folding everywhere.
