Very difficult to predict anything currently.
I will be surprised if we don’t see some significant changes to football going forwards and there has to be concerns about the survival chances of a number of Clubs in the EFL probably and primarily below the Championship.

19th April 2020 at 10:42 pm #96282Hoping everyone is doing well on here and also thinking about those that are not. I am hoping sincerely that our old mate Nil and his family are doing OK in these tough times. You take care mate and congratulations on the title. Much deserved and I am sure the team will get to raise the trophy high at a ceremony as some stage in the, hopefully, near future.

19th April 2020 at 11:50 pm #96283This to replace the above post which was not quite worded the way I intended.
Hoping everyone is doing well on here and also thinking about those that have not been on here for some time for whatever reason that may well still look in from time to time for a read.

20th April 2020 at 9:29 am #96285Hope all and families are well this morning.
Beginning to find this lockdown more difficult each day and we are lucky. We have a nice house, big garden in a quiet rural village. I can walk the dogs freely by the local canal. Waitrose is a few minutes away.
What must it be like for a single mum with two kids in a small highriseflat in London? I cant imagine how awful that mustbe. For those like me who are more fortunate we should give what we can. If I was still working and was asked to give up some salary…..no problem. How about multi millionaires doing the same?_____________________________

20th April 2020 at 10:46 am #96286Which is why a lot of the multi millionaire footballers do exactly that, Adlab. My whole argument in this discussion is not whether they should, of course they should, but that the footballers should be judged and questioned no differently from other multi millionaires like Rees-Mogg, like Murdoch, like Branson, like Adele etc etc etc. Why are they judged differently? Salah, for example, has donated ‘thousands of tons’ of food and fresh meat to residents of his home town in Egypt affected by Covid-19. That’s in addition to the hospital, sewage treatment works and a ยฃ2.5m donation to Egypt’s Cancer Institute. Has Rees-Mogg been as generous? I doubt it somehow, but no-one is calling him out.
And Salah is not unique in this – far from it. Many players do similar.

20th April 2020 at 10:58 am #96287I agree totally HH.
Rees- Mogg the ultimate hypocrit. His hedgefund was betting against the pound pre-Brexit and looking to make millions out of this crisis. Ask why pre Brexit the hedgefund moved to Ireland?
When I was working we used to do this regularly for clients -moving companies to a low tax area. His motto ‘Im alright Jack never mind the rest’.
Time for a wealth tax? I think so._____________________________

Good for Salah. But remember where all foreign players are and who pays their wages.
Harsh I know but true._____________________________

20th April 2020 at 11:41 am #96290I don’t think anyone doubts that many footballers more than play their part in giving what they do to just causes particularly foreign players from countries outside of Europe whose people might be living in really tough conditions they often look to put something back into those countries.
Hasn’t Branson for instance pledged to give away half of his wealth to good causes? I know he’s involved in a lot of charity work very often what people do for Charity particularly famous people is unknown so I think we have to be careful not to rush to judgement on anyone.
Then there’s the situation of what we do ourselves and could we do more I think the answer to just the second part of that is probably yes in the main.
But this whole question came out of a Question Time question on BBC 1 and the question posed was “is it right for Spurs to use the Government’s furloughing scheme for their workers when they are paying their players what they do.” But it’s all yesterday’s fish and chip paper now given the change of heart by Spurs.

20th April 2020 at 11:48 am #96291Anonymousa lot of footballers do a lot for charity but they do it anonymously. the same goes for rich people who aren’t footballers. the problem with today’s society is that if people don’t see something happening on social media they don’t believe it happened.
footballers get paid a lot of money but we don’t know their circumstances or ins and outs of their finances. they might have committed to paying for all their families mortgages and bills. maybe the bulk of their salary comes from bonuses which arent being paid at the moment. footballers in general always have been an easy target and will continue to be.

20th April 2020 at 11:58 am #96294The Roma players to forgo four months’ salary. Edin Dzeko and his Roma teammates will forgo their wages for four months. The players and coaching staff at Serie A side AS Roma have agreed to go without four months’ salary to help the club through the crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
That is refreshing. They no doubt can afford to do that but still, how many would do that for their employers especially the whole squad. Brilliant.

20th April 2020 at 12:03 pm #96296I only used Salah as an example. I’m sure Silva, Aguero and Rodri are equally generous. And there are plenty of examples of players supporting their local charities as well eg Trent, Hendo and Kompany among others.
I think we are probably all arguing the same side! Players should be helping out,at least the Prem players should, but I think we must acknowledge that very many are, and I’m simply asking that footballers are judged by the same standards as the rest of the ‘super rich’ (be that individuals or corporations), and I don’t believe they are. The day I see Hancock questioning Rees-Mogg and his cronies philanthropic deeds, is when I’ll question footballers. Still feel they are just an easy and soft target for inept politicians who want to deflect attention away from their own inadequacies. Anyway I’ve said my piece on this now…I’ll leave it there. Sorry if I’ve pissed anyone off on this but I feel strongly that as one of the richest countries in Europe and with geographical advantages and Coronavirus timeline advantages, it is a disgrace that we are on course to be the worst hit country in Europe. And yet we’re spending our time criticising a few footballers who we THINK may not be pulling their weight.

20th April 2020 at 1:06 pm #96298What an individual does with his wealth is between them and theirs conscience, the question was, as 9 keeps reiterating, โis it right that companies that make ยฃmillions, and continue to pay certain employees ยฃmillions, use the tax payers money to furlough their lowest paid staff?โ
Legally they could, but is it morally right? The general consensus is no…..Pagan

20th April 2020 at 1:21 pm #96299Anonymousthat been discussed on here and there has been unanimous condemnation of it. nothing has changed between spurs saying they’ll do it and 999 seeing it on question time. it just brought it up again.
with the spurs situation, who are the senior management more worried about pissing off? the office secretary who greets visitors and earns ยฃ25k a year or harry kane? if the secretary leaves they’ll just get a new one. whilst I completely disagree with what they did they’ve seen an opportunity to save some money whilst keeping all their prized assets happy.

20th April 2020 at 1:43 pm #96301Paxton @12:39 pm that’s my point actually I don’t think footballers should be criticised above say major Rock Stars or major Film stars but realistically nobody really knows what people actually do for Charity even mere mortals like all of us on here so we shouldn’t really rush to judgement on anyone.
I do think many footballers do their bit for Charity as do many others who aren’t footballers.
As you rightly say the Question Time question just kicked it all off again but the context of the question was based on the furloughing situation and it’s been taken a tad out of context from there.
But I agree with the philosophy of let’s just not pick on PL footballers.

20th April 2020 at 2:03 pm #96303Anonymouspagan – i’ll have you know he’s won a couple of golden boots and that is better than any actual trophy, apart from the 2008 league cup specifically. that’s all he could dream of achieving realistically so may as well stay put!
