5th April 2020 at 9:06 pm #92704Hope everyone and their families are staying safe and well.
Must say, I’ve hardly watched Sky Sports over the last coupe of weeks but tuned in today:
1. Kyle Walker needs to be severely disciplined and possibly sacked – tit.
2. Very sad to see five PL clubs take ADVANTAGE of the Governments furlough, especially Spurs and Liverpool, who made £115m and £35m profit, respectively last year (not 100% certain of the figures but I don’t think they’re far out). The players surely should be asked to help out non-playing colleagues.
3. Can’t believe PL players haven’t come to an agreement over salary cuts, and only 30%? Their argument being, it will take £200m out of the Government’s coffers and potentially the NHS – for their information, it’s closer to £250m, because I’m pretty sure there aren’t any PL players who don’t pay Additional Rate Tax (45% over £150k pa). I’ll give them an idea, how about making direct contributions (equivalent to at least 30%) to the NHS out of net pay. Everyone’s a winner.RANT OVER
Everyone and their nearest and dearest stay safe.

5th April 2020 at 10:29 pm #92707Yes 999, most apart from some backpackers are finally getting it. The fines are no doubt effective and the police do generally give out warnings for minor things. Our main problem with the spread here is and was the cruise ships which account for a good number of our deceased and also some of the spread. The baggage handlers at the Adelaide airport didn’t help either.

5th April 2020 at 11:15 pm #92708A bit of light humour that might help. I had a good laugh which is what we all need at the moment.
Hi guys
Just be careful because people are going crazy from being in lock down! Actually I’ve just been talking about this with the microwave and toaster while drinking coffee and all of us agreed that things are getting bad. I didn’t mention anything to the washing machine as she puts a different spin on everything. Certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant. In the end the iron straightened me out as she said everything will be fine, no situation is too pressing. The hoover was very unsympathetic… told me to just suck it up, but the fan was more optimistic and hoped it would all soon blow over! The toilet looked a bit flushed when I asked its opinion and didn’t say anything but the door knob told me to get a grip.? The front door said I was unhinged and so the curtains told me to ……..yes, you guessed it ?…..pull myself together ._____________________________

6th April 2020 at 10:58 am #92731AnonymousPagan, your comment @ 5th April 2020 at 12:51 pm is basically it for me.
I don’t have a huge problem with players either but the clubs have kicked the non-playing staff to the curb and that’s unforgivable. People don’t need this insecurity, for one. Then also, they are just handing them off to be looked after by the government. Politically, I’m not the kind who looks at welfare or universal health as being waste but more the maintenance of a healthy society, however this is nothing more than opportunism on the part of the clubs and I’m ashamed to see my own club doing this.
The money that the English government is paying out here needlessly, could be put into use somewhere else where it’s a genuine emergency situation.
Over the years I’ve mostly supported FSG. I fell out with them, so to speak, back when they released their ticket pricing plans. Even since then they’ve been the best owners that I could have ever hoped for but this is not a small issue. I do have to ask though, why do they even have the option to do this without it being means tested? They are clearly well able to pay THEIR staff through this time. is it too much work to have a quick look at their books before saying yes or no? I guess these rich entities have all the clout and the non-essential staff are an easy target.
I wrote in and complained to LFC anyway and I suggest others do the same. We can’t do anything alone but en masse, we hold all the cards.

You lads ever get the feeling just by looking at someone, that they are a complete tool?
I have always got that impression from Kyle Walker, long before I knew a thing about him.

6th April 2020 at 11:05 am #92738Spirit of Shankly have written to the Club re the furloughing.
After making £42m profit its best FSG walk away from this one post haste the criticism is universal and they shouldn’t be dining at the same table as the likes of Levy and Ashley.

6th April 2020 at 11:07 am #92740AnonymousNine, it is great to see stars putting up 1M and it makes a huge difference. They are likely saving 10’s or more lives alone. 1m is a pretty large percentage of the worth of a footballer. If the billionaires out there all gave 0.5% of their worth, this pandemic could be put on a much better path forward.
I see that Bezos gave 100m to food banks in the US. That’s definitely a significant sum but relatively, it’s a tiny fraction of what Xavi gave. Saying that, if all Billionaires gave the 0.7 or whatever it is that Bezos did then it would still make a huge impact.

6th April 2020 at 11:10 am #92744AnonymousI don’t understand the Levy and Ashley comment Nine, mind filling in the gaps for me? As for the rest, ya FSG need to reverse their decision here. Maybe these lads get a little too used to working with loopholes or knowing about all the various opportunities to exploit. In one sense, it’s understandable… You see a chance to not have to pay someone millions and you will likely take it, especially if you have shareholders to answer to (legally) but in this situation, it’s morally bankrupt and they’ve got to be put in their place for it.

6th April 2020 at 1:20 pm #92808Mak, Levy and Ashley are well known for sharp practice.
Liverpool don’t have shareholders to worry about they are primadily owned owned by FSG with John Henry being the principal shareholder with a 40% share.
I don’t think FSG have harmed their workers ticketing staff and catering staff for instance aren’t currently needed they’ve not been made redundant they are on 100% of their pay at home.
The only thing wrong is FSG’s taking £2,500 from the Government and the British taxpayer for their non playing staff x the number of non playing staff at such a crucial time when the Clubs last financials showed a £43m profit.

6th April 2020 at 1:27 pm #92813I think it’s all just further evidence that the game isn’t a game anymore. I know the word “integrity” has been used on this thread (albeit a slightly different iusse!) but football lost it’s integrity years ago. What the Spuds and everybody else has done is not that different to the thousands of other bussiness’s up and down the country are doing and many of them are far larger than the footy clubs. Look at the airlines, look at the cruise lines, thousands of them. You know they’re all pulling “a fast one”…

6th April 2020 at 1:40 pm #92822Sean, not been on here much lately. Yes, I live in Sweden. It’s bizarre that the Swedish authorities seem to think they know better than anyone else. In fairness, they don’t seem to be showing any signs of the virus spreading faster than other Nordic countries who have much stricter controls in place. But it’s like they’re determined to play with fire in a desperate bid to preserve the economy. I get their thinking but it feels like it could blow up in their face if they don’t act soon. Schools still all open here at the moment.

6th April 2020 at 1:43 pm #92825Sorry Chucky but Spurs made a profit of over £68m last fy. Mourinho will undoubtedly be given a significant transfer budget in the Summer Spurs shouldn’t be using taxpayers money to pay their non playing staff. Which the Spurs Supporters Club or THST confirms.

6th April 2020 at 1:44 pm #92826AnonymousNine, that’s not entirely true I think, or at least it’s potentially not the same as they may get 100% of their wages but who knows what delays they might be hit with. Would they also have to do something in order to set this up? If so, that’s opening the possibility of further issues, when their salaries would just have continued along normally. In a time when people tend to be needing more money also, it’s just asking for trouble.
The biggest problem is as you said though, the fact that they are using government money when it’s really not needed, I agree of course.
As for the shareholders situation, I was more speaking generally there. I have a pretty good idea about the ownership situation of Liverpool. If they were however say a publically owned company who floated on the stock market then they would I think be legally obliged to taking advantage of such a situation.
I’d be interested in commentary from someone in the know, to correct me where I might be wrong. I am basing this idea on how a publicly held company must try to maximise profits for their shareholders. Maybe when it comes to relief and emergency situations, that just wouldn’t apply at all?
Anyway that aside, I think everyone is in agreement that what FSG have done here is scummy and they just better back-track from it and that’s that.

6th April 2020 at 1:47 pm #92829AnonymousChucky, a competition must have integrity or it’s not worth competing for, the business side of things (what we’re dealing with right now) has never had any integrity and never will. The only thing that’s changing is the strengthening of the influence of business over the sport. If people are genuinely worried about it then stop paying for Sky/BT etc. I personally think it’s a waste of time going down this road but that would be the way to do it.
