Agreed 9. every god damn life matters and you can not sacrifice people. I see that as the easy way out. We can struggle now in order to learn how to best prepare for another eventuality. The economy will just have to adapt and adapt it will. every nation will go through a recession but in some regard, the ones who perform better with this situation, will come out with an advantage over the others, looking at China right now.
That aside though, I will not align with conservative values on this. Lives matter more than money.

27th March 2020 at 3:56 pm #92251Nobody is saying let older people die or do nothing, but at some point a decision will have to be made to ease the lockdown and only isolate the vulnerable I’m afraid. Or else, as others point out, we’ll have even bigger problems later on and even more lives lost. It’s a hell of a position to be in and nobody is saying it’s an easy decision. But this should not be framed as lives vs money, people will have to genuinely assess the situation to minimise life loss both now and in the later future. As the recent article I linked to says, “,such implications could lead to excess suicides, increase in mental health problems…and what about the effects on food production and global commerce, that will have unquantifiable consequences for people of all ages, perhaps especially in developing economies.”

27th March 2020 at 4:47 pm #92254“Jรผrgen Klopp has urged people to remain โdisciplinedโ in observing social distancing measures so that football can return as soon as possible.
In an interview conducted with Liverpoolโs official website via videolink, the German spoke of the need to buy time for overworked NHS staff as they treat patients who have been struck down by coronavirus.
He also insisted that only by following government guidance to the letter can people ensure that life returns to normal sooner rather than later.
The Reds currently sit 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League, two wins away from a first league championship in 30 years, and Klopp is keen for everyone to do their bit so that the competition can resume in a safe manner.
He said: โWe said it now often enough, and I think everybody knows, football is not the most important thing in the world. One hundred per cent not.
โIn this moment itโs clear what is. But the only way to get football back as soon as possible, if thatโs what the people want, [is] the more disciplined we are now the earlier we will get, piece by piece by piece, our life back. Thatโs how it is.
โThere is no other solution in the moment, nobody has another solution. We have to be disciplined by ourselves, we have to keep the distance to other people. We can still do some things, not a lot, but we have to just calm down a little bit with things.
โYes, outside the economy has to carry on, that will start again. But the lower the number will be when we go out again, the number of people infected, thatโs what I understand, the better it is.
โWe have to give our people in the hospitals, our doctors, the chance to treat the people with serious issues with full concentration. We have to give people time to build ventilators, we have to give people time to find solutions.
โThere will be a moment when other smart people find a vaccine for the virus. But until then, we have to make sure we do the best possible for all the people out there. ”
โYou hear now more and more itโs not only the elderly and weaker – itโs not only that, there are younger people involved who can die of it as well.
โItโs not about that, itโs about just, show heart and a bit of sensibility and do the right thing: stay at home as long as we have to. And then at one point we will play football again as well, 100 per cent. ”

27th March 2020 at 6:50 pm #92257What is annoying me at the moment is listening to Politicians, again with Newscasters asking the same dumb questions to get apolitical point across, like, Mr Prime Minister, should you have locked down earlier!!!!
If it was right/wrong it is now irrelevant, we are where we are and the people asking the question may have done exactly the same thing under the information at hand at the time.if they were honest enough. Lets have some sensible question which I believe the Govy are trying to give, maybe not perfectly, but but could you imagine Corbyn, Abbott and McDonell addressing the public. no thanks

27th March 2020 at 8:29 pm #92258Italy and Spain are really suffering, a high density of population in small areas and the infection spreads remarkably fast, London and New York are becoming infection hotspots. The fatality rates are shocking and these are in what we consider developed countries. If this spreads to the shanty towns of Africa and similar areas of other countries itโs going to be devastating……Pagan

27th March 2020 at 10:18 pm #92260Mikus…but somebody with power IS saying it. I know the Govt backtracked on it but not convincingly in my view. You cannot help but think somebody is thinking of a day close to when this is over, then we will see how strong we are as a nation to re build, because it looks like we will loose everything now including reduced pension and loss of savings. I feel that saving for a rainy day, all those years, has been a waste of time now banks are on the take again, after we bailed them out. The money the Govi has made available, through Banks, for SMEs will not happen in reality because the banks want full control so they can pick and choose and add personal guarantees if you were lucky to get one. This has all been done before in the early 70s and the Banks killed it off. The same will happen again

28th March 2020 at 2:01 am #92262AnonymousMikus, if I misrepresented your stance, apologies, wasn’t on purpose.
I still don’t entirely agree with you though, there is value in keeping the rate of infection down. At some point, people are going to start recovering. I think we’re adapting to shut down transmission and all you need is for the exponent value to go below 1. I think it’s currently about 1.2 or maybe more, depending on countries.
When it started out, I think it was 3 or 4. I could definitely be wrong but the thing to take away from all of this is that once you go below 1, people recover faster than the virus spreads and even if it’s above 1, you can nullify the progress of the virus via a good healthcare system and so..
We can definitely get a hold of this. I’m not just looking on the bright side, it can be done.

28th March 2020 at 4:11 am #92264Still open for business at this time in Australia but only for take away and home delivery and actually had a good night of it last night despite so many being out of work.
Not sure how long before the dreaded Phase 3 and total lockdown but we are not there yet. That may change anytime.
From midnight tonight all returning Aussies from overseas are being taken straight off in buses to one of about 6 hotels to stay for 2 weeks isolation and testing under full supervision, courtesy of the Government/tax payers.

28th March 2020 at 8:54 am #92266Seems to me that apart from staying at home and social distance, the most important aspect is testing. Of course this will take time. During the next 2/3 weeks we will see more fatalities (dont the news channels love to trumpet these stats with suitable expressions). It is during this period that testing will be ramped up.
NHS staff and care workers first. Then the test which will all be able to do to establish whether a person has the virus. This is so important as it will identify those who can go back to work.
My other half is a Phd microbiologist and is an expert in viruses (norovirus in particular) and bacteria. She tells me that the pattern of spread is entirely predictable but local factors do have a significant impact and that the pattern in one country or district definetly doesnt have to follows another.
She spent7 years on one project concerning norovirus in Ireland and most of her work concerned validating and modelling distribution of the virus. You cant believe the complexity. And there were no stupid people doing what they shouldnt. In the end the problem was solved. What everybody agreed on in relation to that project was to stop/slow the spread , which they did. During this hundreds of samples were taken. The point she makes is that where we have not been as good as we should have been is taking samples (testing). We should she reckons with her scientist hat on and not with hindsight, have started as soon as we had an indication of the first case. We didnt and are approx 4 weeks late. She puts this down to politics not science.
But stopping the spread and looking for an exit solution is the ONLY approach. That comes with 40 years of experience.

The sooner we can start bitching about football the better.
Just read about the increased measures in Ireland. Hope they work for everybody. Love Ireland. Spent many days in Dublin and Cork on work. Could have done with an interpreter in Cork. My overriding memory with respect to those I dealt with was how bright and clued up they were.
Keep safe_____________________________

28th March 2020 at 9:52 am #92271Life over here in Germany is almost normal. The shops are all closed apart from food and medicine but theres lots of people out enjoying the sun. I’ve just gone for a run and there were people of all ages out, including those of the more vulnerable group. Yesterday there were people jet skiing on the Rhein and naked sunbathing opposite my apartment ? We are not on lockdown just social distancing despite over 50k cases and even over 1100 in my city alone. Next week I return to the office one hour drive away.
Cant help thinking Merkel is taking a massive gamble.

28th March 2020 at 10:38 am #92273More examples yesterday of people in the UK ignoring the regulations and enjoying Parks and Beaches as a Policeman said to two such people in the week this is a Lockdown not a holiday.
People should not be socialising in the Parks and on the beaches despite the temptations of the Sun it’s irresponsible and puts the NHS which is already close to breaking point at further risk.
If people in the UK can’t behave responsibly and seemingly they can’t close the Beaches and the Parks and introduce heavy on the spot fines.
I can’t see this situation being over by Easter and if it’s not and we get half decent weather then the authorities have got to have stamped out this rush to Beaches and Parks.
