“Canada has become the first country to warn that it won’t send its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics unless they are postponed for a year, as pressure builds to delay the Games due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Canadian Olympic Committee said holding the Games as planned would threaten the health of its athletes, “their families and the broader Canadian community for athletes to continue training for these Games”.
“In fact, it runs counter to the public health advice which we urge all Canadians to follow,” it said in a statement, hours after the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, conceded for the first time that postponement was now a possibility if the Games could not be held in their “complete form”.
The committee added: “While we recognise the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community.”
The Australian Olympic committee (AOC), meanwhile, has told its athletes to prepare to compete in the Olympics in the northern-hemisphere summer of 2021.
Olympics postponement to 2021 on cards as IOC gives itself four-week deadline

The AOC said the massive disruption caused by the outbreak would make it impossible to assemble a team in time for the Games, which are scheduled to open on 24 July.“We have athletes based overseas, training at central locations around Australia as teams and managing their own programs. With travel and other restrictions this becomes an untenable situation,” its chief executive, Matt Carroll, said in a statement on Monday.
New Zealand added to pressure for a delay, saying the country would consider boycotting the Olympics if they open as scheduled.
The committee’s president, Mike Stanley, published an open letter on Monday in which he wrote, “Athletes need a safe, and fair, playing field to compete and, right now, the widespread and evolving impact of Covid-19 is not allowing that to happen.” He urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to “finalise their decision as soon as possible, bringing clarity to our sports and athletes”.
A few hours later, following the news that Japan was considering postponing the Games, Stanley told Newshub that “postponement is the only way to go”, and that New Zealand would consider a boycott if the Games went ahead as planned.
Opposition to holding the event in July has risen sharply in recent days, with US Track and Field and UK Athletics among those calling for a delay because of the pandemic. Several countries, including Brazil, Norway and Slovenia, have pressed the IOC to consider postponement but have not threatened a boycott.” The Guardian

23rd March 2020 at 8:01 am #91843The biggest problem now is the people.
People are not adhering to rules. Crowds flocking to parks etc.
I really can’t see how this is going to get under any kind of control soon. The numbers are soaring by the day.

Brexit…not worried about that…we, the UK, know what our terms are, let them worry about any suggested deal..not us.. I feel a lot better now not being managed by unelected and divisive people

23rd March 2020 at 12:05 pm #92007Mak, sorry I only read your post now
Like Brian, I feel for the governments a bit but they need to lock the uk and Ireland down now. People are not listening to Leo or Boris. Fools gathering in places.
No social distance is being kept.
The people are the problem now. When full lockdown comes, people are going to regret that they didn’t abide by the rules.
Staying in will save lives.

23rd March 2020 at 1:33 pm #92062You know the world is full of idiots who dont listen and worse dont understand.
It is inevitable the govt introduces more severe restrictions.
Where I live there is a lovely walk up one of the mountains. The police closed the road. What do the idiots do? Chuck the signs into the hedge. Selfish bastards is a mild expression._____________________________

23rd March 2020 at 1:45 pm #92066Other than Supermarkets stores are closing all over the country, Pubs and Restaurants have all been closed and I suspect we are days away from an enforced lockdown in the UK because people aren’t sensible enough to keep their distance.
Alongside that cases of Coronavirus are increasing by the day and sadly so are the deaths
The Olympics which don’t start until July 25th are about to be postponed yet we have UEFA setting the dates for the CL and EL Final’s at the end of June and the PL are meeting again on April 3rd to discuss how and when they can restart the PL with a plan for behind closed doors games in the Midlands in June.
Out of touch just doesn’t come into it there’s no chance of playing any PL games behind closed doors in June imo not safely anyway Football needs to get things in to perspective the only thing that is important currently is to overcome this Coronavirus and try and save as many lives as possible.
Forget football forget all sport it is not important right now.
This season is tarnished now and given all the circumstances I’ve got no interest in seeing it finished and according to a survey I saw last week neither do the majority of football fans put the lid on this season and start afresh goodness knows when next season.
People are dying every hour and every day, now is not the time to be trying to force feed the PL and the CL and EL into some kind of culmination to the Season which would be tarnished anyway by how its intended to play the games and the emergency services would need to be on call to be at any games played behind closed doors when they are needed elsewhere.
PSG played a CL game behind closed doors in Paris a couple of weeks ago and thousands of fans were outside the Stadium imagine how many Liverpool fans might turn up to a behind closed doors game that might confirm the title for Liverpool.
Trying to finish the season like this under the current circumstances is completely bonkers.
The football authorities need to tune in to the even more terrible events than the UK that are currently unfolding in Italy surely that tells them now is not the time to try and force feed a culmination of the PL,CL and EL.

23rd March 2020 at 3:39 pm #92070CHM1967-Spot on my friend, the only way to beat this thing is the vaccine.Whether we like it or not we cannot expect or accept the entire world to remain in lockdown for a long period of time-it will drive economies bankrupt and leave billions of people jobless & without income! The sad truth is that if they dont find a cure very soon, the Govnts worldwide will have no choice but to take drastic measures to allow the economies to continue working.

23rd March 2020 at 4:35 pm #92072I could also see an air traffic jam and accidents with these cameras in the sky…stupid people and more stupid to even play the game in the first place
Nine…Boris gets criticised for going into lockdown earlier but it is the public….who he trusted would act sensibly…that have let country down…the ones who moan and do not follow the guidelines and act sensibly.
In the last few decades there has been a culture change, for the worse in my opinion. I am pleased are not near a WW3 scenario because most I doubt would serve Queen and country…it is a “ME” generation

23rd March 2020 at 4:43 pm #92073Nine..I have said before UEFA,FA,Fifa = GREED They have no understanding of the current position or they would have closed down ages ago but they are trying to protect there millions and if they can find a way they would do it but this is too big for them to handle. Take the TV companies who want money back for games not played, where are these peoples minds? they make more than enough out of us to have agreed to a complete close down in the first place. Parasites..all of them

23rd March 2020 at 6:03 pm #92076“After initially suspending play for two weeks, La Liga has now suspended its matches indefinitely as the country continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. La Liga met with the Royal Spanish Football Federation and announced in a statement on Monday that play will be postponed until the Spanish government declares it safe to be able to return to the field. There are 110 matches remaining in La Liga with numerous clubs also in European competition.
The statement read as follows:
“The Monitoring Commission established by the current RFEF-La Liga Coordination Agreement AGREES [to] the suspension of professional football competitions until the authorities of the Government of Spain and the General Administration of the State consider that they can be resumed without creating any health risk.
“Both the RFEF and La Liga wish to express our greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to the Spanish people and also share our condolences for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of soccer to the many families that are losing loved ones.”
UEFA is aiming for all domestic competitions to be completed by June 30.
As of Monday, Spain had almost 30,000 cases of the virus with the death toll approaching 2,000. Clubs in the country have also been directly impacted with five Valencia players testing positive for the virus following their trip to Italy to face Atalanta in the Champions League. Deportivo Alaves and Espanyol also have confirmed cases. The country is set to remain under a lockdown for the next two and a half weeks to combat the outbreak.
Over the weekend, former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz died at 76 after contracting the virus.”
