The flu only kills more because it’s rampant. This will definitely kill more by the time it’s done, unless the isolation measures and all the other things society is scrambling to do can have a strong affect.

21st March 2020 at 7:25 pm #90863Lewandowski and his wife make 1m EUR donation to fight the virus. I know they make a fortune and that is hardly a dent in his bank balance but it’s still a very generous thing to do.

22nd March 2020 at 9:37 am #91232A real problem is that it has reached many third world countries around the world where it will run rampant and therefore will be around for a very long time. The minute any country relaxes it’s border security rules the risk of the disease reentering your country of residence will most likely be certain due to the massive increase in carriers around the world. Let’s hope it is a once only per person infection otherwise the elderly will need to be permanently protected from infection.

22nd March 2020 at 12:16 pm #91319Lock down here in NSW coming up. Fortunately at this point in time our restaurant business can still run but take aways and home deliveries only. That is a blessing as I was thinking the worst and total close down but could change at any time. The infection and fatality numbers needs to stabilise for that to continue I would think. Our NRL (Rugby League) is resilient (or maybe stupid) and plan to continue on until the Government tells them to stop. At the moment every team is staying together in isolation and following the protocol as required, but for how long? It must be tough on them to be away from their families all the time. They no doubt interact on Face Time to ease the pain a bit.

22nd March 2020 at 5:42 pm #91386Restaurant’s over here were trying to keep going last week 67 even though less and less people were coming out and we’re looking to ramp up take away meals that all changed at midnight on Friday night and they’ve now all been rightly closed and can only offer take aways now.
Our favourite Restaurant which we were booked in to today has completely closed because they can’t generate enough take away business on it’s own to make it feasible to stay open.

22nd March 2020 at 6:16 pm #91389“The Premier Leagueβs next meeting is scheduled for 3 April but clubs will not be asked to agree to the 1 June date until there is a greater understanding of when the COVID-19 pandemic will reach its peak in the UK.
Further, no decision will be made that puts further strain on the emergency services, as some competitions necessitate the presence of ambulances and medical staff at matches – even if they are played behind closed doors.” Daily Mirror.

22nd March 2020 at 7:00 pm #91390AnonymousSean it is scary now alright. The thing is, the actual percentage of increase is not shocking. 121 new cases is no joke but thats a 14% increase. When you look at America, who the other day had apparently a 76% daily increase rate, it’s not as bad… but of course it’s pretty alarming all the same.
I still feel that Ireland could have been better than this. We had warnings from China and then Italy and I feel we’re re-acting to our own situation each step of the way, instead of acting on the warnings we had. It’s going to be more and more difficult to stop the spread , with each day. If only we put more of an effort in first day, maybe we’d be in a better place now.
We don’t have many ICU beds here in Ireland, so a much more aggressive response was required. I just feel, rightly or wrongly that we’ve totally blown our chance of getting ahead of this thing. It’s not been entirely ham-fisted and I am not just going to sit here blaming the government, some people just haven’t taken this seriously.
I think the change in attitude will come as a result of America going up in smoke. At their current rate, they’ll have millions infected in no time.

22nd March 2020 at 8:02 pm #91391Mak…certainly lessons to be learned for everybody. For the first time, for me, I do have some sympathy for our politicians…they are the ones making the decisions and this virus has caught just about everybody out. It is not just a case of throwing more money at it as well, we all have a part to play…this is being outlined repeatedly but still people ignore what is being said, I can understand a PM not wanting to impose draconian measures but if that what it takes it has to be done and those that flout should receive heavy punishment. I do have confidence in what we are doing but we are only at the start of this story and I can see total lock down approaching

22nd March 2020 at 8:32 pm #91393For me having three Govt people standing there , daily, giving up to date thinking is re assuring…..I know some part is PR but listening to most of them I feel they have a plan and they will get on with it. The big issue will always be have they acted in a timely way….nobody knows that and the Govt , at least, as set out its explanation of why they have not done things sooner. There is huge logistical effort required here and we have to let them get on with it There is no place for Political gain or ammeter economics I am impressed with the new Chancellor, certainly an improvement on the doom and gloom merchant we had before, Boris was wise to get rid of him, he knew what he did to TM

22nd March 2020 at 9:22 pm #91418As important as Brexit is it is of secondary consideration imo currently to the health of the country and the Coronavirus could have an even more meaningful impact on the economy.
My personal opinion is that if Brexit slips a bit because of Coronavirus so be it let’s focus on trying to beat the Coronavirus first.

23rd March 2020 at 3:33 am #91669For me the major concern confirmed by Mav is the re – infection which means this will go around in circles and if it doesn’t get the vulnerable the first time then there’s always 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on. The only answer right now is to develop a vaccine and fast.
