So we get to the end of June and thereโs no sight of footy starting again, what do we do?
Simple get the captains of each side together, each armed with a coin, heads counts as one goal, tails nil, both toss their coins and we have a result. Not ideal but at least we get a result…..Pagan

18th March 2020 at 4:36 pm #89012Oh know!
The Eurovision song contest is cancelled
As one weighs up what is being said by the “experts” I just cant see any positive change in the next 12 weeks. So despite what UEFA et al might say there is very little chance for resumption, remembering all teams would have to be fit._____________________________

18th March 2020 at 4:41 pm #89015At the same time, you can’t practically enforce a lockdown for 12 – 18 months. We’ll just have to hope that summer will reduce cases, the NHS capacity increases and various anti-viral drugs are found to be effective. Something will have to give eventually that allows the economy to recover.

18th March 2020 at 5:15 pm #89031Wise words as ever Brian I have my doubts that we’ll see any football before next September or October if even then.
UEFA’s proclamation that all Leagues should be completed by the end of June and setting the CL and the EL Finals for the end of June is beyond optimistic.

18th March 2020 at 7:12 pm #89083Anonymous“Yes, it would be unfair on LiVARberoOolโs, but freezing the table and awarding everything as it stands would be unfair on 19 other clubsโฆ as the only certain thing is 1st spot. ”
Actually it would be unfair on all 20. It’ll be marked as a title given not won, by the bitter fans out there.
Not sure if they will get the chance to but they’ve got to try and play out the rest of the season. Now, I’ve said before that we can cancel next seasons domestic cups to get more space in there and that’s what I’d pick, or just off-set things over 2 seasons.
One way or the other, it’s got to be played.

18th March 2020 at 7:24 pm #89088AnonymousDunno Adlab, we’ll have to see if we can get a hold of this virus. It’s not looking great though, especially for the likes of the UK and USA, who have not taken a sensible approach to containment / testing.

18th March 2020 at 7:26 pm #89090AnonymousJohn Barnes is suggesting that we write off a future campaign in order to finish this one. Perhaps that’s the way.
The season will have to be completed though. One way or the other.

18th March 2020 at 8:09 pm #89108Mak…I would not be concerned about bitter fans, to me , they are not real fans. As I mentioned before, whatever the permutations being discussed they are wasting there time because this virus will get worse , make no mistake about that The date rate has shot up to day and by a large amount in Italy. Talking about what is right/wrong about football status is completely irrelevant. I am not saying, Mak, you should not have a view or anybody else, after all, I have had my say, but the Administrators should earn there money and make the hard decisions, if not, they will be too late and events will overtake them…quickly Of course there will be more losers than winners in the scenario I have mentioned, but overall, everybody looses. Liverpool should feel no loss of dignity or unworthiness , a well won campaign only beaten by a virus (and Watford!!) The virus is unbeatable at this stage and will be at least 2 years before we see any real progress

18th March 2020 at 8:26 pm #89115In Italy 475 people have died in the last 24 hours. Hospital ships are on there way to New York. There are temporary mortuarys being erected on Sports fields in London.
Football is irrelevant!
Pretty much whatever is proposed re recommencing Football won’t happen there’s not a chance of all the League’s in Europe starting by the end of June imo. And given everything does it matter.

18th March 2020 at 8:49 pm #891269, youโre right, it doesnโt matter, the country will go into lock down, how long that lasts is anyoneโs guess, coming out of it will take months as the whole infrastructure will be in disrepair, hopefully the essentials, gas, electricity, water, railways, roads, fuel will be able to cope…..Pagan

18th March 2020 at 8:56 pm #89129AnonymousAn excellent post Brian. I don’t disagree that we have social priorities that out-strip football but when these things are dealt with, football will resume, one way or the other.
It is probably going to get worse before it gets better and I don’t see football resuming by May and ya maybe June or further. We don’t really have models to work with here, so it’s a bit up in the air. I will say though, Italy was a warning shot for our countries and the response was pathetic. It seems to me that we’re only enacting measures as their usefulness is kinda surpassed. Schools stayed open for far too long, travel wasn’t restricted early enough. Isolation measures were just not implemented quickly enough.
i think the reason behind this was to preserve the economy but as a result of inaction, the damage will be 100 x what it might have been if they got very serious, immediately. We dragged our feet and will pay the price for it. The UK’s attitude towards this is the worst, in my opinion and I think Boris Johnson should be investigated, with a view to possibly putting him in prison for the rest of his life. I don’t know enough to say “he’s definitely guilty” but it doesn’t look good. To create a policy where people almost purposefully become infected is murder.
That’s the serious side of things but this is a football forum and we’re going to focus on the impact to the sport a bit more than we might prioritize it in our lives, so I think it’s fine to talk about where I want to see things go with the game, when we have finally seen the other side to this.
You’re not wrong Brian, in your position regards to fans who will say it wasnt a real win but it’ll be such a big thing. We walked this season but as you all know, that doesn’t mean a damn thing about what will come the season after. We might not win it again for another 30 years. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I know that it just must be played out and if next season has to be voided to make it happen then so be it. At least with next season, there is nobody cheated out of anything. Not a single game has been played and there is even a good chance that we might have defended this one but I just want the certainty, to keep all the noisy nonsense to a minimum.
There are discussions that this season will be voided and I will stop following the PL if that happens.

18th March 2020 at 9:11 pm #89136army enforced lockdown from Friday…….
god help us all, not just the virus risks but frankly the fallout for people, jobs, getting food, services and so so so many things, the minutae, there will be many more unseen deaths in the years to come with business failing, familys struggling to live, get food and so on, the supermarkets are empty and its only going to get worse, the cure could end up being worse than the disease

18th March 2020 at 9:37 pm #89146The PL’s view on where we go from here is due to be discussed and released tomorrow let’s hope it’s a bit more realistic than UEFA’s.
A rush to complete the season is completely unrealistic imo. And if it runs into next season as I think it will I think we have to turn the page and start again let the table/tables stands as they are Liverpool bave won the title anyway and everything else can filter down and be sorted from there.
It won’t please everyone but we’re dealing with unprecedented times.
I wouldn’t have dared tell Marlon Pack that yesterday though when we had our chat with Cardiff just 2 points off a Play Off place.?

18th March 2020 at 9:44 pm #89151Steveo, this is already becoming a huge concern about the economy and the public in the longer term. Everybody is of course for saving lives, but we have to ensure we continually review the data and act out of reason and proportion, not panic, because as you say, the longer term consequences could be even worse if we’re not careful. And how stupid to have put ourselves in so much debt in the West over the last few decades, and not just because of the financial crisis. Now we need the credit card, we have little room left.

18th March 2020 at 10:31 pm #89172AnonymousNine, in your scenario I guess Liverpool could be presented with the trophy on the opening game of the season. They would have to make sure it is at Anfield though.
I am a little worried they will do something insane and void the season. This kind of talk had died down as I think most agree it would be the worst path to take. However, it’s recently come back and Sky are talking about the possibility. If they choose this path then they devalue the competition. Teams are either competing for the PL title, or they aren’t. These definitely are exceptional circumstances but there’s no need to do something exceptionally stupid just because of it.
How realistic is playing out the season, by staggering football over the next few years? I don’t know. It’s gonna get worse. If they make sure our first game is at Anfield and hand us the trophy then, you know what, fair enough, I’d accept it. Anything short of that and Liverpool should pull out of the competition.
