Makes me wonder about everything that’s gone on with Andy Burnham trying to fight for a support package with the Government for Manchester.

21st October 2020 at 6:44 pm #168822Unfortunately the Government don’t have a pot of gold to call upon they are borrowing hundreds of billions of pounds to fight Coronavirus and to support those that need support because of the Coronavirus.
I doubt this borrowing will be paid back in my Grandsons lifetimes probably not even in their offsprings lifetimes. We only finished paying for World War 2 in 2006.
The support monies provided to any areas in need because of regional lockdowns should relate to each area.
Reportedly Andy Burnham wanted Manchester be given more than ahy other area had been given but the support has to be fair to all areas and must have a relationship to those other areas.

22nd October 2020 at 9:40 am #168854There’s that saying of if you don’t ask you don’t get.
The reality is that we’ve been in over 10 years of austerity – the mess left by the previous people in power. The local communities have been destroyed and the high street is on it’s last legs. Business Rates!
People have been furloughed only to then return to no job.
From an economy point of view, it’s not healthy to return to full lockdown and close certain types of business. Plus a certain city in Leicester that have had to play catch-up.

22nd October 2020 at 12:41 pm #168855Nil, the Government has spent over Β£200 billion from April to August of this year on Covid and that continues to increase with today’s announcement.
Our national debt already runs into trillions of Β£’s what was offered to Andy Burnham was fair in relationship to what had been provided to other areas in Tier 3.

22nd October 2020 at 12:43 pm #168856Greater Manchester has a bigger population than Merseyside, Lancashire and South Yorkshire, so he is right to ask for more money, as more people will be affected with these ridiculous restrictions.

22nd October 2020 at 1:06 pm #168857Nine, sad reality mate for the Taxpayer as ultimately, it’s them who have to foot the bill. We need the economies stimulated and stable to drive trade etc. Households will struggle. It’s one certain period of time mate where the government will need to step up, but could really be vital for us in the long run.
Cheers

22nd October 2020 at 2:00 pm #168860Tugay, population was taken into account in terms of support for all 3rd Tier areas in fact the per capita allowance for each Region is almost exactly the same.
Thankfully one way or another it seems to be all settled now.
However we all need to bear in mind that we can only do what we can afford to do nobody can continuosly spend what they haven’t got even Governments.
To date from April to August the Government has spent over Β£200 billion fighting the Corona Virus all of it borrowed.

26th October 2020 at 8:04 am #169140442, every Government has had to dig far far deeper into their finances that they don’t actually have than they would have ever wanted to do due to the Pandemic and rightfully so.
On 31 December 2006, Britain made a final payment of about $83m (Β£45.5m) and thereby discharged the last of its war loans from the US. By the end of World War II Britain had amassed an immense debt of Β£21 billion, the size of the UK debt for the Corona virus will dwarf that Β£21 billion.
The cost to the country just for the period April to August is over Β£200 billion and it will continue to rise and who knows where it will end and how long it will take to pay it off it certainly won’t happen in our lifetimes nor probably in our Great great Grandchildren’s lifetimes.
The cost implications of this dreadful Pandemic and how it will effect the lives of the UK population long after it’s hopefully gone are frightening

26th October 2020 at 8:12 am #169141Anonymous9… the numbers dont matter. its just a series of digits added to a balance sheet. Its monopoly money. Everyone is borrowin more than they were before. The financial system is broken and is automated, even before covid. The virus has simply sped up the digits added column. https://www.usdebtclock.org/world-debt-clock.html

26th October 2020 at 8:20 am #169143True enough mate but ultimately they will all have to deal with it or the walls will fall in. Nobody can spend what they don’t have forever.

People need to follow the rules but I think most have given up.6 week lockdown with so many jobs lost. Very sad

26th October 2020 at 11:21 am #169148The problem is Sean no Government knows what the right answers are re the Corona virus. In Catalonia and across Spain they’re under curfew now.
The Mother and Baby scandal in Ireland is terrible I would like to think that such a thing couldn’t happen again.

26th October 2020 at 7:53 pm #169171Sean…feel much the same way but you have to remember they are POLITICIANS they are useless at anything but argue between themselves instead of working together for the common good of the people. We have also spawned power mad Lord Mayors..another costly idea hoisted on us.
