Not that I want to agree with our new wee nomadic lamb from the circus, but I have to, really.
Not naming names, but I do recall a certain striker who used to grace the Prem had a habit of flicking the ball up to a defenders arm in the penalty box and appealing for a penalty when there wasn’t anything “on”.
Make it a straight black and white issue, then every attackers going to be aiming for the defenders plum sack as that’s were the hands will be!

7th March 2019 at 5:21 pm #35128The thing that really gets my goat about this (apart from YooUtd actually getting it, obviously, π ) was the ball was going nowhere near the goal, somewhere near row Z I reckon.
If they’re going to have this automatic decision if it hits the hand, at least have it so it has to be goal bound, no in any bloody direction. Just asking for trouble.

7th March 2019 at 5:26 pm #35129Agree with that Chucky. I’d have been pretty annoyed if that had gone against us. Out of interest though, if incorrect decisions bother you so much, where was your outrage when Spurs were given a pen after a clear offside on Saturday? Or indeed the dodgy pen you got in the Cup semi final against Chelsea?
Let’s face it, we all suffer from selective outrage when it suits ?

…and isn’t that what we all love about football currently, Ed? While not every decision made by referees is correct, the vast majority are, despite what we as fans claim. All our teams have both benefitted and suffered from incorrect decisions, but I would like to feel it evens out over a season. And frankly I would far rather suffer the odd bad decision than have my spontaneous enjoyment of football spoiled by a bunch of officials poring over some subjective incident from a little room God knows where!

7th March 2019 at 6:16 pm #35137I do find it amusing about the grief Sir Harry is getting about the peno the ref gave him due to an error due to the linesman… and yet have I seen a comment about Boomerang’s Fosbury Flop at the other end to try and cheat hs own way to a win… was it because he missed?? Or was it something else?? π
Joking aside, Spuds were lucky with that decision, granted, but I can think of a few this season where the put was on the other foot. As mentioned above, it’s swings and roundabouts, sometimes you get ’em, some times you don’t. Part of the game and should remain so…
Anyway, back to the footy…
RENNES!!! YOU HAD ONE JOB!!!

Always liked Rennes, as Silly-Willy-Nilly would say, they’re like my 87th favourite team.

7th March 2019 at 6:39 pm #35141Yeah fair points Chucky!
As for Sir Harry, I think he’s lost a lot of the “neutral” fanbase his England exploits gained him through some of his antics. Claiming that goal last season was frankly ridiculous. Then he’s getting a reputation as a bit of a diver. Not quite up to Young, Sterling or Alli’s level but he’s getting there. The “headbutt” didn’t help either. Players of his quality have everything magnified and blown up. It’s just the way it is

7th March 2019 at 7:07 pm #35148AnonymousI definitely want to see what VAR can do for the sport. I can understand how people might not want to have the sport interrupted, it’s a genuine concern. I wills ee how this plays out over time I think but what makes me look forward to it coming is is that I’m sick of horrible mistakes by the officials costing my side (and for others, the same) points.
The frustration of the officials being the focal point after a match, when it can either take the sheen off a good performance and win or of course cost your team points, is something that has left too much of a bitter taste in my mouth.
I’m open to the idea that VAR will be a mistake and over time I may change what side of the fence I sit on. I think it may be a case of it coming in and being streamlined, before people are unilaterally on one side or the other.

7th March 2019 at 7:25 pm #35150This is Micky, I’m looking at it from a completely different angle. I don’t think risk is worth the reward and there are bigger “stains” on the game. Okay, it will supposedly eleminate “mistakes” in the game, but considering the last two big VAR tests, the YooUtd peno and the “did it, didn’t it” during the Ajax game, despite VAR, neither case was conclusive. In the Ajax game, it neither proved 100% whether it was out or not (I’m leaning towards out, to be honest!) and in the YooUtd game, VAR and/or the Ref simply went by the letter of the law (which was it hit his hand) and gave the peno, without taking any consideration with regards to the “spirit” of the game. At the end of the day, I don’t think there’s anybody who suggests that was a proper penalty, only “technically” a penalty.
That’s the problem with whole VAR thing. It will turn the game away from a game and simply into a series of technicality debates. They say now it’s only for the major decisions, but how long before we start getting throw-ins and corners “sent upstairs” for review? Fouls? How far back in the passage of play should it go? (I mean, the Ajax “issue” was about 6 passes before they scored the third, how far “back” should it go?).
I think the bigger issues that need solving is the cheating and the diving going on in the game. I think that should be tackled why before this VAR system.

7th March 2019 at 7:45 pm #35154AnonymousYa absolutely It cant be expected to eliminate mistakes though. If this is peoples exceptions then they will be the most disappointed. It will massively cut down on them though. I think in time they’ll have to come to some kind of conclusion with regards to things that simply cant be resolved by reviewing them. Whether that goes to refs discretion, or an advantage to one side in any given scenario then.. ah who knows really. It’s a young technology in this sport and will definitely have teething problems. I only hope that we can get beyond that stage and still keep the spirit of the game intact.

7th March 2019 at 7:48 pm #35155AnonymousI agree that the cheating needs to get some serious focus. I have never understood why it is tolerated… and before people say it isn’t, it absolutely is.

7th March 2019 at 7:50 pm #35156My biggest “fear”, if you want to call it that, is the amount of “abuse” the system will get from the players and managers during the game.
I think it was Pool vs WBA last season in the FA Cup, the first half was an absolute joke of a game, with player and managers yelling at the ref etc…
Granted it’s got teething problems, but considering all the bullocks the players/managers come out with now during a game, VAR is not going to make that better one little bit. Only worse, much worse.
Is it worth it so maybe one important decision can be made every 5th game or something? I say no, it isn’t.

7th March 2019 at 8:02 pm #35160I think with VAR itβs also a case of βtoo many cooks spoil the brothβ. A ref makes a decision, then gets told to look again which inevitably raises doubt in his mind, and heβll then look at it in slow mo and everything looks worse in slow mo, and then he might feel pressure to change his mind because he might think he wonβt want to go against the other refs opinions/concerns. Itβs almost like refereeing by committee. Iβd sooner the refs only used it at their discretion when they wanted to check a big decision.
As the saying goes any fool can make something complicated, itβs take a genius to make it simple.
