“On the stroke of half-time Lionel Messi did something awful, but also quite funny, to Phil Jones. Messi had spent the previous 45 minutes picking up the ball in half-spaces and running in a series of vengeful repetitions at Jones and Chris Smalling.
This time Messi took the ball just past the centre circle. He saw the space ahead of him. He also saw Jones ahead of him. As the United man veered back into his path there was a nutmeg so gentle it was almost loving.
The Camp Nou let out a roar. Jones surged back gamely but could only watch as Messi jinked past the other way, teasing him the way you might tease a fond, lovable old family dog with a paper cone on its head and one good eye.
Messi shot at goal, looking for a first half hat-trick, but the ball hit David de Gea in the chest and squirted away. Moments later the half-time whistle blew. United were 2-0 down and already looking like a team that had, for now, reached the end of something.”made me chuckle, sorry united lads, its from the Irish Times

17th April 2019 at 10:18 am #37774Well,that was embarrassing in terms of the game.Again played with 10 mnen from the start-the emoji man was not allowed into Catalonia it seems. Was having a girly chat with a few Barca fans before, during, and after the game-they were in fact feeling sorry for United & us fans! Froze my 34DD tits off during the game, but watching Lionel Salah Mane Messi in the flesh is always worth it!

17th April 2019 at 10:47 am #37776Yeah De Gea has so much credit in the bank, it’d take an awful lot of those errors before he gets any stick and understandably so. That we have Ashley Young in our strongest side says everything you need to know about where Utd are at the moment.
There are a few players worth building around in Lindelof, Dalot, McTominay, Rashford. The rest are just not good enough. Rashford needs service, but he’s the one player who was performing both under Mourinho and later under Ole.
I think people have underestimated the enormous task facing Ole in rebuilding this side to be anywhere near competitive next season

17th April 2019 at 11:01 am #37778Be fair Eddy, it’s going to be double mega super tough for anybody to catch the two at the top of the table, with each of the “challengers” facing their own particular set of problems:
Spuds: Simply paying the sort of cash needed to make that leap as well as probably losing two of their best 11
Arsenal: Rumored not to have a lot of cash to start with to rebuild that dodgy defense…
YooUtd: Need a major overhaul, have the cash, but do they have the “prestige” anymore, especially in Europe?
Chelsea: Could be facing a ban anyway and if they don’t, very probably losing their best player anyway. On the other hand:
ManCity: One or two top draw additions makes them even stronger….
LinoPool: Sameboatmega-crusier that City are sailing in…Fully expect the gap to get even bigger next year, if I’m honest….

17th April 2019 at 11:02 am #37779And yes, the Neville’s do look like a bulldog chewing a wasp who’s just had his face slapped with a big wet kipper… and that’s their good side.

even if we do scrape up a few quid it wont be spent in defence! it rarely is and then its shocking (Mustafi)

17th April 2019 at 11:37 am #37782Man Utd are still reeling from losing both Ferguson *and* Gill at the same time all those years ago. To lose one was bad enough, but both? Itβs no wonder theyβve been rudderless ever since.

17th April 2019 at 11:44 am #37783Whenever I’ve watched Utd play recently I’ve had no idea what style of football they actually play. Are they are counter-attacking team? Long ball? Possession? Press or stand off? Utd need to establish their playing identity and work towards getting the players that fit it.
There was an incident last night when Barca were playing around at the back and the Utd forwards were pressing. The ball went back to Ter Stegen who passed it through the middle I think to Arthur who didn’t have a Utd player within 30m. It was like half the team were pressing, the others just standing off retaining shape. If you press from the front it’s bad enough giving the goalie an easy option but even worse if that option actually gives an opportunity to start an attack.
Pogba needs someone to do all the dirty work in midfield. If you stuck Kante there Pogba would be free to do what he is good at and you’d have a world class midfield. Matic and the other midfielders just are not good or mobile enough.

17th April 2019 at 2:16 pm #37784If Goalkeepers make a mistake it usually ends in a goal DDG makes very few and is still the best there currently is imo.
What a goal from Coutinho last night.
The Chelsea transfer ban rests with CAS.

If Chelsea manage to get the ban suspended I think they will be very very active in the Summer if not the Plan b will be to bring back some of the best loanees and promote the best youngsters which I think would still leave us challenging for a CL place.

17th April 2019 at 2:28 pm #37785Donβt know about De Gea. Heβs obviously still a very talented keeper. But he has made a notable series of gaffes in more recent times and on the biggest stages, be it the World Cup or Champions League. Still enough stock in the bank? For the moment, yes, but these errors are tarnishing his formidable reputation.

17th April 2019 at 3:12 pm #37791Yeah there isn’t really a keeper who hasn’t got a mistake-laden spell in him. Even Neuer has looked very shaky at different times of his career. De Gea has had some real gaffes this season but I still wouldn’t swap him.
Chucky, yeah don’t get me wrong. We’re not alone in having challenges ahead in terms of closing that gap. As you say, all of the chasing pack have their own challenges. I’m just annoyed that this dilemma we now have with Ole was totally avoidable. We now face a huge summer of rebuilding with a manager who now appears to be totally out of his depth. He may well turn out to be good enough but we had absolutely no reason to act as swiftly as we did.

17th April 2019 at 3:25 pm #37793Well, you didn’t want Poncho, did ya?? π
Spuds could be losing Wee Erik and Toby…
YooUtd could be losing Doughnut Theif and Emoji-man…
Chelsea could be losing Micky Hazard…
Goonies are losing Ramsey…Can’t see City or LinoPool losing anybody they don’t want to lose, everybody else is already playing catch-up before the transfer window even opens… it’s a two-donkey-derby next year already…
