30th January 2020 at 7:14 am #65254No defence again tonight. Utd goal came from the lack of height in the defence. Garcia is good but he too lacks height.
I agree about summer signings. I suspect they already have their targets._____________________________

30th January 2020 at 8:18 am #65326Terrible decision for Matic 2nd yellow.
Clear pen for city
I think pep is the best coach in the world but he makes some really bizarre tactical decisions at times
What was he trying to do last night? Was walker a centre back? Cancelo left full?
Two yrs ago city were absolutely smashing Liverpool in the 2nd leg cl Semi final. Ferdinano was running the midfield then at half time, pep but him at centre back and went to five at the back and Liverpool took over and won 2-1
He played 3 at the back at the nou camp with the 3 playing a huge line and literally standing on the half way line and Barca beat them 4-0
He’s get it right a hell of a lot more then he gets it wrong but I think he over thinks something’s sometimes
Just my opinion

30th January 2020 at 1:11 pm #65340You are correct, Sean. Very strange set up, tactically, by Pep last night – playing three at the back without recognised wing backs is bizarre. Sterling and Mahrez out wide, Rodri, Gundogan and KdB in the middle, Bernardo with a free role (I think) and Aguero up top; it could have back-fired.
Having said that, de Gea made 2/3 very good saves and we squandered (trying to walk the ball in) at least 3 clear-cut opportunities. In addition, United had only four attempts on our goal and while watching the game, you had the feeling that United didn’t really believe they could go through to the final.
If we’d put 2/3 of our chances away, the (fickle) press would be hailing another tactical masterstroke. Fine margins and all that….._____________________________

30th January 2020 at 1:19 pm #65341He explained it that he used 2 FB as CB to counter Utd’s fast strikers, plus Stones, Mendy, Fernandiho and Laporte were deemed a risk. Apparently he may do the same on Sunday to counter Moura and Son.
“Manchester United played with two incredibly fast strikers. You need legs to defend this position. Son and Lucas are incredibly fast for Tottenham, so there is a chance I will do it again.”

30th January 2020 at 1:28 pm #65342Defence has always been Pep’s Achilles heel it was Klopp’s too before he signed Alisson, Van Dijk and Fabinho.
City are one of the best teams in Europe going forwards but always look vulnerable defensively, defence has to be a priority for Pep this Summer if City are going to have any chance of bridging the gap with Liverpool.
I know City were missing players last night but they’ll have to play a lot better and be tactically spot on to ensure they get past Real in the CL and the CL has to be their major objective now the title is long gone.

30th January 2020 at 1:47 pm #65346Didn’t see the game last night, but I do think Pep can go over-idealistic at times at the back, if not be naive. No better example of this than the Barcelona Bayern game some years back when Pep tried to go for it against Barca and took huge liberties at the back, with it backfiring.
However, this can work conversely. At Spurs last year in the first leg of the CL, Pep went over cautious, which again, proved his ultimate undoing.
Whilst Pep remains one of the top coaches, I think what this does say is that he can get easily spooked by fear of the other side. That’s not to say he shouldn’t still adapt, but he does seem to overcompensate at times or tries to be too clever. But fear does get the better of him, which is a big reason imo why he’s yet to replicate his CL success elsewhere, though this does seem to be more of a pattern in cups than the league. It’s as though he needs to keep his league hat on in the bigger cup games and just concentrate on the best pragmatic way forward as opposed to be trying to be too clever.

30th January 2020 at 2:00 pm #65349I thought Pep’s explanation given all his defensive injuries that he was trying to counter the speed in United’s front 3 plus James made sense it just didn’t work in the end because the players looked like square pegs in round holes in defensive mode.

30th January 2020 at 2:50 pm #65365Nine…in saying that Utd offered little, the goal was from a set piece poorly defended by City and we tried to walk the ball in the net at times. If Utd are to improve they need some belief in what they are doing, no evidence of that and considering they had to chase the game they had no craft at all

30th January 2020 at 2:53 pm #65367OK, Pep has his critics and I understand why but I for one, would not swap him for anyone else and take the losses as and when because `i know we will have more wins

30th January 2020 at 3:01 pm #65373In the end we are in the final and have a good chance of our second! piece of silverware.
We have no chance in the CL as our defence is too open._____________________________

30th January 2020 at 3:07 pm #65375Adlab, realistically I don’t think you can really call the Community Shield a trophy it’s a glorified friendly played for Charity to open the season.
The tough part of course is getting to play in the Community Shield.?

2nd February 2020 at 7:39 am #67223“Pep Guardiola has fired a warning to seven of his first-team players over their long-term futures at the club. The Citizens face Tottenham Hotspur today.
Man City watching title ‘slip away’ to Liverpool due to two players
Three Tottenham stars picked out who Jose Mourinho will be excited by
Guardiola will decide on the futures of even players at the end of the current season, according to the Sunday Mirror.John Stones, Benjamin Mendy, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Joao Cancelo, Nicolas Otamendi and Angelino are the players at risk.
The seven players – who cost a total of £250million – are all under threat of being sold in the summer as Guardiola plots a rebuild of his squad.
City are already set to lose David Silva and Claudio Bravo, and could look to sell the at-risk septulet in order to fund a summer spending spree.” Express
I predicted a very interesting Summer transfer window in the PL and the above if accurate would adds substance to that.

2nd February 2020 at 4:24 pm #67255Agree Brian but I put the above up for the theme of a big City makeover in the Summer and I do think Pep will be going all out in the Summer transfer market to try and reclaim the title again. Hopefully we will see a proper title race next season.?

3rd February 2020 at 11:29 am #67411There may be a proper title race next season but I’d be pleasantly surprised if it involved City. There’s every chance that Liverpool will dominate for at least another two seasons so completing three PL titles. I think that’s a more likely (but obviously not certain) outcome than City overtaking Liverpool next year as I think the inevitable changes will take a while to come through – assuming Pep stays to rebuild. In the near term, it’s likely to be ground hog day for City in the league but there might be enough to hold onto a top 4 place and maybe win a ‘domestic’ Cup.

3rd February 2020 at 11:47 am #67414Surrey blue….you have to remember everyone was saying City would win the title for years to come, forgetting, football is a changing game and even Liverpool may find next year difficult to manage. You cannot discount other teams as well who will get stronger and make for tighter games and we may not see big leads in the table as we have experienced in last few years. Liverpool have been extraordinary this year as City were but I do not see these teams dominating as much next season but either may win it. That has been the story of the season, Liverpools relentless run of wins. City have built a club that will see regular success of some kind, e.g. Cups, league etc whatever and for that we should be pleased. The only thing I cannot stand watching a match is players not putting an effort in….that is in the past now with pep but as was shown against Spurs some have a mentality problem and that needs to be addressed. I think it will

3rd February 2020 at 12:04 pm #67415I agree with Brian, this year with all other teams having issues pool are a class a part, not sure we can say the same next year, just that they are in the best place in the summer with less tweaks needed, but these players hgave p[layed a lot of games at a high level, fatigue and injuries will hit, players will come and go and possibly the odd star may leave with clubs already sniffing around VVD, Mane and the Egyptian!
doesnt mean they will leave of course but at least one might and even of not canprove unsettling
we just have to hope that some other clubs sort their own messes out to be able to challenge themn
seems like a huge amount of players, if they got rig of all them and the older ones, thats a hell of a summer of business to do
just hope my own club can get back up there and be relevant but as much as i like areta so far his instance in keeping certain players isnt confomrting!
