The January window if used correctly can be brilliant, it may not be the best time to get players in to affect the current season, but if used to talk to players to show your summer plans, or even better to sign for the next season it can be a great opportunity. Chelsea did this with Robben and Cech, and you would think others have done the same and may explain why some teams get their business done early in the summer…Pagan

27th December 2017 at 7:30 am #10064The battle for the top 4 will be what sustains interest in the PL post Christmas with the title already all but done and dusted bar a complete City collapse which seems incredibly unlikely.
From 2nd to 5th the points difference is a mere 6 points and one of the 4 teams chasing a top 4 spot is going to be disappointed and it could get even more competitive should Arsenal find a little bit of form given that they are only 4 points off of Liverpool in 4th place.
Any of the 4 or 5 club’s chasing a top 4 spot that can pull of a crucial signing or two in the January window will considerably improves their chances of finishing in the top 4 and as difficult as the January window has always been to sign the best players some great players have moved in the January window Vidic, Evra, Matic and Suarez come to mind for instance not forgetting Fernando Torres of course! ?

27th December 2017 at 7:37 am #10065I loved this tweet from Sam Wallace at the end of the Chelsea Brighton game.
“Eden Hazard comes off at Stamford Bridge having been the game’s best left winger, best right winger, best playmaker & best centre-forward”.

27th December 2017 at 9:05 am #10067Morning All.Just watched MOTD.Does it come as any surprise that Booby Madley
was in charge of the Bournemouth 3-3 West Ham?.Another 93rd minute calamity from him.
Why did he overule the linesman ? Plus why were they talking for a good 5 minutes.Fair play to David Moyes for keeping his council at the time.

27th December 2017 at 9:24 am #10069PPT Madley is such an incompetent ref. Has to be the worst in the PL by some distance. The FA do nothing about poor ref decisions? Aside from actually backing some up with the ridiculous dive panel.
The game is deparately in need of video technology, for goals, pens, and cards. Imo. I also would like sin bins.

27th December 2017 at 10:10 am #10080From a referee’s point of view, he has to be certain that the player is offside, not onside, as the offence is offside. The linesman was correct to signal for the offence, but I think that was more luck than judgement.
What the conversation was is anyone’s guess, but it was probably be around whether the forward touched the ball, again the ref needs to be certain. I would personally like to see the conversations between the officials recorded and for contentious decisions released after the game so it can be seen how they came to be given.
The problem with video technology with offside is the linesman will tend to let anything but the most blatant offences go as it can then be reviewed if it leads to a goal….Pagan

27th December 2017 at 10:15 am #10085Oh and Madley has reffed us a few times and each time he is a pure joke. It’s almost as though he has to be completely controversial for no reason at all
I can’t remember the game he refed a fewcyears ago at Etihad which was ridiculous

27th December 2017 at 11:18 am #10093Hate this ref with a passion, he’s such a joke and always ALWAYS gets the big calls wrong.
Again though I don’t think the FA quite realise how much they have lost the football public because refs are unaccountable which means they mess up and simply shrug their shoulders, say oops and carry on. For a multi billion dollar industry that’s simply unacceptable and has to stop. Why o why can’t they explain their decisions or even say, shiiiiit I got that wrong, we would all feel a tad better

27th December 2017 at 12:13 pm #10096Goat, has refereeing got worse or is every decision overanalysed, the ref sees everything once from an angle no one else has. I’ve reffed and my lad refs now, if something happens in a game and I’m there I ask one question “what did you see?” based on his answer he makes the correct decision.
As I’ve said from my point of view, that’s all that needs to happen, get the ref to just say what he saw, or even better get him to do this at the time and record it, you’d then get a real time view of the logic behind his thought process that can be reviewed after the game.

27th December 2017 at 1:35 pm #10102Nothing has changed Pagan, nothing, apart from refs nowadays seem more in the limelight and they love it. Growing up and playing and watching refs just seemed to be there but not there, now they are damn well there. In the past refs would talk to the players slmost explain themselves, that worked, that was good. Now they seem to HAVE to be the centre of all attention be that good or bad and some refs, Madley, Moss, Mason, Oliver, Taylor seem to love it. Someone really needs to tell them we pay to watch the players not these clowns. Again though, while they are completely protected they can do that and continue to get shit wrong and don’t care. Also 4th officials are milking it as well.
Take City v Everton, walker sent off when reviewed on MOTD they all laughed and said where is the foul? Shocking!! Not a thing happened to the ref Madley or Oliver who was 4th official who seemed to make the non-call.
A billion dollar business ran mostly by clowns for 90 minutes. Not good enough

27th December 2017 at 2:09 pm #10110Goat, a ref explaining his decisions to the players, a bit like rugby. Unfortunately in order for that to happen the players would need to listen and the accept the decision.
It happens in rugby as that’s the way the game is, in football you have to run up to the ref knowing full well your in the wrong and the eff and jeff at him.
The same pundits that sit on MOTD, BT, Sky etc. criticising refs for making mistakes are the same ones justifying players throwing themselves to the ground at the merest touch, in effect it’s alright to try and con the ref but not alright for the ref to be conned.
If you want a game where there are very few mistakes made by refs, expect a game controlled by a panel of refs sat in front of video screens with a tanoy system.
Enjoy the game with injustices both for and against you, that’s what makes it so good…Pagan

27th December 2017 at 2:10 pm #10111I think everyone needs to bear in mind that a few years back if you weren’t in the ground watching the game you couldn’t comment on a Referee’s performance because you hadn’t seen it.
Now we’re all armchair quarter backs armed with lap tops and tablets sitting at home analysing every controversial decision front ways side ways and backwards multiple times including in slo mo’s belting out messages on social decrying the Referee and telling everyone what a terrible game the Ref had whilst the poor old Referee’s have to make crucial decisions in an instance with 60,000 people breathing down your neck
If anyone thinks it’s easy go out and try it in a park game I guarantee anyone will make mistakes even on a park pitch on a Sunday afternoon in a game between two Pub teams with just a handful watching rather than 60,000 screaming their heads off.

27th December 2017 at 2:20 pm #101159, as you know, £120-150 and 3 days will get you qualified as a ref, do 5-6 games and you’ve got your money back and you’ll get a greater understanding of the laws of the game, and a rude awakening to how difficult it can be.
Reminds me of a quote I heard recently “nobody wants to help me do my homework, but plenty of people want to mark it”

27th December 2017 at 4:34 pm #10123…but we wouldn’t have a game if we didn’t have referees. Of course they make mistakes but show me anyone, in any field, that doesn’t. It’s frustrating when the decisions go against your team, but you just have to hope that they at least even out over a season or even better fall in your favour.
100% agree with Pagan. Enjoy the game, have a moan if the decision is wrong, but believe the refs are honest, and that they do their best to eradicate those mistakes. Don’t blame them, blame their employers for not finding better ones!

27th December 2017 at 6:08 pm #10137That’s were I am Jim. I’m not after killing all refs by court panel hearing etc BUT when one makes a fundamental rik and then refs the week later and then also tips back up at your ground 6 weeks later it’s not right.
Phil Dowd once gave a pen against us in a semi final against Pool when the ball hit Micah Richards knee then his arm. Rule book states no pen as it’s accidental. Dowd tried to defend himself when asked by a reporter but some years later brought out his autobiography and admitted in said book that he completely got that wrong but pressure from above forced him to keep his stance!!! He said sorry to City.
Hmmmmm
