26th December 2017 at 7:48 pm #10011“When you say a club like Manchester United, do you think Milan is not as big as us?” Mourinho asked. “You think they are not as big as we are? Do you think Real Madrid are not as big as we are? You think Inter Milan is not as big as we are? There are many big clubs and you say big clubs, I know what is a big club.”
“One thing is a big club and another thing is a big football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world, so when you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, Tottenham does not have that responsibility. Tottenham is not a club with the same history as us. Arsenal doesn’t have the responsibility to win it, Chelsea doesn’t have the responsibility to win it.
“Manchester City buy the full-backs for the price of the strikers, so when you speak about big football clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club.”
Mourinho has spent Β£286.2million on seven players since he was appointed United manager, compared with the Β£360m Pep Guardiola has splurged on the City squad. When that figure was mentioned, he replied: “Is not enough, is not enough. And the price for the big clubs, the price for the big clubs is different from the other clubs, so the big, historical clubs are normally punished in the market for that history.”
“So the boys are doing what they can and they are doing fine, you say seven points from 16 or 15, something like you say, I say last two matches we had 15 chances to score and we concede three S[**t] goals and an amazing free-kick.
“So the boys do what they can, they are trying hard with the problems and injuries we have. I am not happy with the result, and against Leicester, but I am happy with my players.”

26th December 2017 at 7:59 pm #10015999, canβt see Β£80m making the difference between the two sides. Pep has put a team together playing the style of football he likes, Jose has assembled an expensive array of individuals….Pagan

26th December 2017 at 8:11 pm #10016Mourinho ultimately may end up at PSG as there are few club’s left that will fit him but winning the French League won’t appeal to him and the only challenge would be winning the Champions League.
I don’t think he will walk away from United in the medium term his ego wont let him and he will also believe that he can ultimately win the PL he’s been here before overtaking a Barca team managed by Pep that at the time was considered the best club team football had ever seen.
Personally I still wouldn’t rule it out without things were to continue to flounder and the Board turned against him.

26th December 2017 at 8:21 pm #10019Pagan, that post wasn’t necessarily my opinion it was from the Manchester Evening News and I put it up because it contained the quotes that banjo was referring to re increased transfer spending.
Though taking nothing away from what Pep and City are achieving I do think Pep inherited a much better squad of players than Mourinho which included Aguero, Sterling, Silva and De Bruyne.

26th December 2017 at 8:31 pm #10022I realised that 9, but the difference in spend (although vast in real terms) is not that much player wise. Jose is a great motivator in the short term, but heβs not a builder of teams. Pep is showing he may have that talent, but time will tell if he can maintain the harmony at a club with a squad of top players who all want to be in the starting 11…Pagan

26th December 2017 at 8:45 pm #10024Pagan, I’ve never argued that point mate but had Jose inherited Aguero,Silva, De Bruyne and Sterling as Pep did the squad Jose started with would have been significantly stronger and Pep’s considerably weaker.

26th December 2017 at 9:15 pm #10035It’s a poor excuse imo. It was often said that Fergusson could have won the league with sides he beat into second place.

26th December 2017 at 9:26 pm #10042If Mourinho spent as much time and energy concentrating on the shortcomings of his own team and less on what City are doing. His team might drop less points!
The gap might be 15 points after City’s game against Newcastle, yet three games ago it was only 7.
Is that’s the fault of City’s spending? Give it a rest, Jose! The questions I’d also like to ask the floor are
1) Has he got value for money from Pogba and Lukaku ? Nearly Β£200M
2) How many players has Jose actually improved since last season ?
Under Pep.Players he inherited have improved significantly from last season.
Otamendi.Delph.Ferna.KDB.Silva.Aguero.Sterling.ImoPlayers he’s signed.Stones (massive improvement) Walker (improved us massively)
I’d argue only Bravo has been pants of PG’s signingsLike I said on another thread I fancy he’ll be off in the summer if we win the league.
Be interesting to see if United back him in the January window ?_____________________________

26th December 2017 at 9:39 pm #10045ppt, the January window is a very difficult window to trade in and whatever United do or don’t do in the January window won’t change the destiny of the PL title this season it will take the Summer window for anyone to have any impact and even then City themselves will strengthen too.

26th December 2017 at 9:58 pm #10055Thanks Jim π
I agree nine re the January window. But imo United could drop out of the
top 4 without new impetus/signings.Right now Liverpool.Spurs and Chelsea
look like they could be back in the race for top 4 ?I know we’ve all got a fair way to go yet.But some United fans on the local
social media outlets think Jose has lost the players already?_____________________________
