” I don’t think morally, both Leicester and United would ‘play for a draw’ and drag out the 90 minutes. I just don’t believe there would be anti-professional or going against the Integrity of the game.”
I can’t work out exactly what you’re saying here but if you think that them playing for a draw would be unethical somehow then I can’t disagree enough. The reason teams in this situation sometimes seem to down tools is because there is risk in trying to win it. You go for that win and the other team catches you on the break, no CL next season but oh well, at least you’ve satisfied your moral duties?… Just no. If neither team NEEDS to take that risk then often they won’t and there’s a very strong argument that suggests that they shouldn’t.
It’s perfectly within their rights to not take risks and play out a dull draw, it achieves the same result as taking this extra risk. If another team wanted the chance to qualify ahead of them, they should have thought of that before this match day has come.
Of course though, mistakes will be made and the second either team takes advantage of it, the gloves are off.

22nd July 2020 at 8:30 am #132875Anonymous“Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz has reportedly agreed personal terms with Chelsea.
Sky Italy’s Angelo Mangiante reported on Monday morning that the 21-year-old wants to join the Premier League outfit and no other team is on his mind.”
Nine, have I told you how much I hate Chelsea recently?
😀 😀 😀
You lads are going to be SOME team, either next season or the season after. Hope you get this deal over the line.

22nd July 2020 at 9:26 am #132898AnonymousMak – their defence will still be shit though. that’s where they need to strengthen. most goals conceded in the top 10 and only 8 clean sheets recorded.

22nd July 2020 at 12:36 pm #133080I’m pretty certain that if Chelsea can complete the Harvetz signing they will then turn their focus to strengthening the defence seemingly there are a number of players who will strengthen the defence on Chelsea’s shopping list.
A Chelsea with a stronger defence, with the likes of Werner and Ziyech and possibly Harvetz together with what they already would be very interesting going forwards.

22nd July 2020 at 12:43 pm #133082Mak, I think the Leicester v United conspiracy theory made sense up to Spurs beating Leicester currently Leicester probably have to win the game.
Despite all my wishing and hoping I don’t think Chelsea will win at Liverpool and I think it was always destined that it would go down to the last game of the season v Wolves for Chelsea.
Squeaky bum time.?

22nd July 2020 at 12:48 pm #133085“Chelsea have reportedly submitted a €25m (£23m) offer for Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico.
The Blues are expected to bring a new left-sided full-back to Stamford Bridge this summer, with Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri expected to leave ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.”

22nd July 2020 at 2:38 pm #133107London Footballs predicted team with a return to 4/3/3???
Kepa; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger, Alonso; Kovacic, Jorginho, Mount; Willian, Giroud, Pulisic.
I think Chelsea fans have to steel themselves tonight to United winning and a potential loss to Liverpool it’s not all doom and disaster if that happens we have two games to try and get the 3 points we need to secure a top 4 place and it was always likely to go to the last game of the season.

Personally, I would keep Alonso as he has plenty to offer as a wing-back. instead, I would sell Emerson Palmieri. I would also keep Zouma and sell Christensen, and sent Tomori on loan to a PL team for him to gain the much-needed game time. that is if we can sign a centre back though! if not I would keep Tomori.
As for us going to Anfield with the hope of getting a result, I had that belief because Liverpool is not a dirty team, and they will not sit and go for the draw. Klopp will go for the win, and I assume likewise Frank will go for the win as that will assure us CL football next season.

22nd July 2020 at 11:03 pm #133293Any team who scores three goals in a single game should at least be taking a point at worst-case scenario or winning it normally. but in our case, we walk out from Anfield as losers and let down by our not for good defence and keeper. this is a warning to the club that, if we want to stay on Liverpool’s toes, we need a new keeper, two proven Centre backs and a Left back. None of our current crop of centre backs covers themselves in glory this game or in the whole season. I’m still in disbelief as to how a team who have conceded 54 goals and counting is still in the top four? that shows the good work that Frank and our attackers have done in keeping our head above water. and if we get that CL spot, which is still in our hands we need to get rid of many players including Jorginho, Christensen and co.
The bright side is both of our strikers have scored which will be good for their confidence, and our best player had a goal and an assist to his name. that is the positives. our midfield has been non-existent tonight, and it has been like that against Sheffield also. but the difference tonight was our attack was lively.
Let us hope we beat Wolves and either United or Leicester win also. or even a draw will be fine. but our defence was a cause for concern while our attack was a cause for optimism tonight. it shows the good and the bad side of this Chelsea. and thankfully we still have fate in our hands.
Congratulations to Liverpool for the title win once again. and you had been fantastic not only tonight but throughout the season.

23rd July 2020 at 5:00 am #133380So we have to get a point out of Wolves OR United beat Leicester. Wolves need to win to guarantee 6th and Europe so they are going to be a very dangerous animal (ha ha) Intriguing match coming up and I am not overly confident however would hope that United with the unknown situation at same time kick offs will go out there to win and guarantee their place and not take any risks. Leicester away is never easy.

23rd July 2020 at 8:04 am #133421AnonymousSpanked. Dear frank, please stick with a back line for next season and don’t chop and change it. I also think you need to make a couple of signings in defence. But thank you for the season and giving us something to look forward to in September.
A delighted fan.
From where we were to where we are today, we’ve had an exceptional season that must become the new normal… and to see improvements next year

Ya, that’s putting it very mildly Nine. If Chelsea got Havertz and an improved defence over the line this summer, I’d be genuinely worried about you lads but also kinda pleased at the same time, as I want Lampard to do well. Also, an attractive attacking side like Chelsea is a good thing to have in the PL. The thing is though, you lads might be “too” good then, if you catch my drift 😛
I hope ye get a new keeper though, I think Kepa may be a bit useless? Getting Kante back to good fitness will be key also, as that back 4 needs protection.
BTW commiserations on the match last night, it’s incredibly rare that we concede 2 goals, never mind 3. We were really rocking in attack also, so it was always going to be hard to keep the score down.
I can see ye beating Wolves int he final game, as I don’t think they have anything to play for now? GL

23rd July 2020 at 8:56 am #133444AnonymousAnyone else think this is a bit like the time we needed a win against liverpool to qualify for the champions league… Jesper Grjonkear scoring the goal for us on t he final day of the season.
My waters are stiring and I think we’ll be out of the top four race until the final ten minutes of the last game of the season, then we’ll score and get the result we need.
Socially distance to the bookies… Are they open now in the UK?

23rd July 2020 at 9:07 am #133450Wolves nothing to play for? They are currently 6th a point in front of Tottenham. If 7th also gets a Europa League gig then you would be right. Having said that though Wolves are a damn good side and I’m sure they would like to finish at least 6th. Extra money for the club too.

23rd July 2020 at 11:00 am #133476Anonymous67… No easy game in the league anymore, no fans also means there are some freak results too… Wolves have absolutely excelled this season… A point will be a very good result. Three will give the squad and fans something to hold onto going forward into next season.
A very nervy end to the season. I am just delighted we’re in the mix. I thought we’d be luck to get top 8/ 10. Was hesitant about Lampard, wondered what he’d do. FA Cup final and Champions League football sets the clubs ambitions out… Been a roller coaster season… as seen with Liverpool winning the league. That wasnt supposed to happen! 🙂

23rd July 2020 at 12:37 pm #133499Anonymous67, I was under the impression that 7th does get a UEFA cup place. If I’m wrong about that then you know why I said Wolves had nothing to play for. If this is the case then it definitely complicates matters for you.
For me, I want to see both Wolves and Chelsea in the respective European competitions next season. I’m tired of the 2 horse race, the PL is not about this and it’s got to end. As for Wolves, well I guess it’s the same philosophy behind it here too. I want the big 6 to be challenged and Wolves are a pretty cool project with a great manager.
Hopefully there will be a way for both sides to get what they need. yesterday I got everything I wanted. If people remember, I called for Firmino to grab a goal and that even came true. I can’t complain about the lack of a clean sheet. Chelsea have probably got the 3rd best attack in the PL and that is on the verge of getting an absolutely massive injection of talent. So, interesting times ahead, you lads just have to win that last match.
I guess for Wolves to get 6th, I’d have to hope that Spurs lose but they are playing probably the worst team in the league ATM, so no chance of that. I will just pray that 7th does in fact get a UEFA cup palce because it’s looking bleak for Wolves if not.
Anyway dudes, thanks for your kind words after the match, it can’t have been easy knowing that it’s going down to the last day. No matter what happens, Chelsea are on the up, 100%. GL

23rd July 2020 at 12:42 pm #133502AnonymousPaxton, ya they do have to sort the defence out but I imagine that they take signings that can improve them, as they become available. I could be wrong but my guess here is that they knew full well that Liverpool were going to sign both Werner and Havertz. That these deals fell through (thank you Covid) and suddenly we had players who had made up their minds to move to the PL and they pounced.
I mean, it’s sheer brilliance. It’s not the first time that Chelsea have gone for Liverpool targets, they seem to be aware of our scouting prowess and are exploiting it and you know what… that’s the 200 IQ move.
It’s definitely going to be weird watching these 2 lads knowing that they were almost certainly on their way to Anfield at one point, that they would be wearing red, were it not for this outbreak. I am just assuming that they will score against us.

Come on Mak it’s not like Harvertz and Werner were unknown players every major Club in Europe would have been aware of them and been watching them for a long time Ziyech the same.
And it’s well documented that Harvetz original choice was Real Madrid but they’re not in a position to buy him this Summer and ironically Chelsea would be buying Harvetz with a large chunk of the Real money they paid Chelsea for Hazard.
None of the above solve the defensive problems though and I’m pretty sure that will be next on Chelsea’s Agenda.

23rd July 2020 at 2:10 pm #133522AnonymousI never said the players were unknown but there are expensive players out there with big profiles who aren’t really worth it, hence why loads of big transfers end up as failures but when it comes to them both, they were PRIME targets for Liverpool. They weren’t just 2 names in a database of 100’s that we were keeping an eye on.
I wasn’t saying the above in any negative way though, I was giving Chelsea credit for exploiting the situation. I’m not bitter about it, as we have an amazing first team. Of course we could use the strength in depth that top quality additions would add, especially since we’ll be challenging on at least 2 massive fronts next season but we’ve done it over 2 seasons with this group already, we’ll give it a good go again Im sure.
None of them will solve the defensive problems for sure but you’d be surprised what one good signing might do for ye and I’m sure you’ll have a stab at it.
