Chelsea supporters on social media turning into a lynch mob for the board again.
Are we privy to what attempts the board made to sign players and what the responses were? Frank seemed pretty relaxed and jovial in his ‘end of transfer deadline’ press conference. Maybe it is just the supporter base that is edgy. Win the next three against Leicester, United and Spurs – all huge regarding our top 4 prospects, make top 4 and not purchasing will have been the best decision ever made. Pulisic and Loftus-Cheek coming back in, Abraham fit and Reece James on fire. Let’s take a few steps back, relax and see what eventuates.
Most of the business in January is the relegation threatened teams trying to buy their way out of trouble. What BIG names jumped ship this window?

1st February 2020 at 12:51 pm #67155Like kids in a sweet shop 67 having a tantrum when their Mum doesn’t buy them the sweets they want.?
Too much emotion and too little realism mate.
In the areas we are looking to strengthen I can’t think of one player who moved in January that would have fitted the bill for us other than perhaps Fernandes who wanted to go to United and Eriksen who Spurs wouldn’t have sold and who wanted a new challenge in Europe anyway.

1st February 2020 at 12:56 pm #67156AnonymousI only read what he said, I didn’t watch the press conference or anything else but Lampard seemed pretty annoyed that Chelsea didn’t sign anyone. He also seemed a bit defeatist about their odds of getting top 4.
I will admit that I haven’t really been paying attention to Chelsea’s potential transfers this window, as just keeping up with Liverpool in January hasn’t been easy. It was one of our busiest transfer windows in a while. 😛 .. but no seriously, I have to say that I’m surprised they haven’t signed a few quality players. It surely can’t be that the board don’t want to back Lampard? I mean, you don’t get him in under those conditions and expect him to be doing better, unless you’re utterly insane.
CL for next season is at risk though by a lack of action. Qualification alone will more than pay for the increased transfer fees that you see in this window and it seems they’ve decided to risk it. I can see this going wrong for them.

1st February 2020 at 1:01 pm #67157AnonymousLiverpool signed Suarez and Firmino in the January transfer window. We sold Coutinho during it. Good business can definitely be done here (not if yer Barca :P), between big sides.
Nine, whether or not people are letting their emotions get the better of them, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they had no cause for concern. Again, I don’t know enough to be sure of anything but my gut tells me that Chelsea should have worked hard to improve their team. I mean you lads went all the way to European Courts to win the right to do nothing. How much were the legal fees there I wonder?

1st February 2020 at 1:56 pm #67163Mak, you tell me mate in the areas we were looking to strengthen who moved in January who would have strengthened us because I can’t think of anyone.
Chelsea covet Chillwell I’m sure Chelsea enquired for him in January but either Leicester wouldn’t sell him in January or quoted a stupid price nothing you can do about that.
Cavani and or Mertens would have been good short term signings but Cavani only wanted to go to Atletico and Napoli are impossible to deal with. Chelsea were offered Salomon Rondon on Thursday but they decided to stick to the plan of only signing to improve the squad which seems sensible to me.
Clearly the intentions was to try and improve the squad in January but January is recognised as being notoriously the most difficult month to do that and a couple of positive signings going back several seasons doesn’t change that and it’s no good just buying anyone for the sake of buying it leaves you with a squad that’s too fat and which with the new rules on loans you can’t solve that problem going forwards.
“I didn’t watch the press conference or anything else but Lampard seemed pretty annoyed that Chelsea didn’t sign anyone.” Mak you’ve said things like this before when you haven’t watched what was said but in the press conference Frank was relaxed and laughing and joking albeit I’m sure he’s disappointed we couldn’t get anyone in we really wanted.
Hopefully a big big Summer.?

1st February 2020 at 2:36 pm #67167Carragher on United in the January transfer window:
“When asked on deadline day whether Man Utd fans will be happy with their transfer business, Carragher replied on Sky Sports: “No, I don’t think so.
“Manchester United need big change but it’s not easy to do that in January. The fans will understand it’s not been easy for them to bring players in.
“They would have wanted four or five players in but they’ll have to wait for the summer now.”
Ditto Jamie Ditto.?

1st February 2020 at 2:48 pm #67170Good point today not many go to Leicester and come away with anything.
The key now is to get Pulisic fit and Loftus Cheek who could be huge for us and just like a new signing.

1st February 2020 at 3:15 pm #67173Anonymous“who moved in January who would have strengthened us because I can’t think of anyone.”
Why does it have to only come down to the players that went somewhere else?
“Mak you’ve said things like this before when you haven’t watched what was said but in the press conference Frank was relaxed and laughing and joking”
What are you suggesting by saying “you’ve done this before”? That I’m trying to make something up is it?
In the press conference he talks about the signings that the other clubs around them have made, saying that Chelsea for whatever reason haven’t signed anyone. He’s said that they are underdogs for the last CL place. Do you need quotes for this?
you’ll find them here.

1st February 2020 at 3:34 pm #67174Mak, I never mentioned anything about underdogs but Chelsea were underdogs for a top 4 place at the start of the season nothings changed.
If you remember all the pre season posts both on here and the Chelsea site Chelsea posters acknowledged it was a transitional season given all the circumstances top half would have been more than acceptable top 6 an achievement so where Chelsea are now is an unexpected bonus but it will be a challenge to stay there and imo Chelsea fans shouldn’t be too disappointed given all the circumstances if we don’t quite make it.
As Glen Hoddle said today “this Chelsea side will be a hell of a side in a couple of seasons.” That’s what we’ve got to aim for.
Personally I wouldn’t have an opinion on something I hadn’t seen ie the bust up between Carragher and Keane and Frank’s press conference yesterday where he was laughing and joking but that’s just me nothing to worry about.
Always good to see you on here though buddie and a pleasure to read your views on all things Chelsea. Cheers 9’s

A lot has changed. You are currently in 4th place and had a 6 point lead on Utd.
“Personally I wouldn’t have an opinion on something I hadn’t seen ”
You are saying this as if I just randomly came up with an opinion. In court they use transcripts, which they are ok on judging people with. I read quite a few quotes from that conference and I am not interested in whether or not Frank had a laugh with the reporters, he said these things and it’s definitely valuable information in entering a discussion with. I mean, you’ve got to remember that I haven’t waded in here claiming anything besides what the text suggests.

1st February 2020 at 5:13 pm #67193“At the start of the season, among a lot of fans and a lot of pundits and commentators from outside, nobody had us in their top four and people were saying if you are in the top eight or top 10 we understand. Obviously not fighting relegation but now probably because we got ahead of the curve, expectation was that if we are to hang on to fourth, a particular result is not good.
‘I get that, expectations change, but the reality is now that we are in fourth but it is going to be a really big fight. Now we have to be up for that challenge, young or more experienced players, but the first person who is up for that challenge is me.’
Lampard confirms that as far as he is concerned, no business in the transfer window is better than bad business during it, and he wants to work towards his long-term plan rather than make a knee-jerk signing. He returns to the subject of the fans’ support.
‘When we lost against Liverpool, I have never seen a reaction to a home loss like that because the fans were saying we get it, we are young, there is a transitional feel about it, and we need that trust even more than ever for the next four months.”

1st February 2020 at 5:24 pm #67194AnonymousNine, you know my position and I know yours but when a reporter asks you such a stupid loaded question like “would you prefer to do no business instead of doing bad business?” then I really do not know what to say anymore.
The facts are that Chelsea were 6 points ahead of Utd. Chelsea didn’t improve their team and Utd did. Lampard was highlighting this whilst stating that they are underdogs, so he’s clearly not happy and he’s even said “for whatever reason” when talking about why they haven’t found someone.
I understand that he was pretty jovial, I’ve seen some of the footage of him laughing a bit, since. I still think that he’s likely masking over discomfort at a lost opportunity. Who could he sign that would improve Chelsea? I don’t know… but as good as Chelsea are in some areas (creativity mainly) they are not in the situation where they are so good that it’s impossible to see where improvements can be made.
I’m not trying to suggest that I have something conclusive but you can’t deny that this is a point of discussion and cause for conjecture. That’s all I’m trying to do here.
As for taking an interest in Chelsea, ya you lads can play some amazing football when you’re heart and minds are in it. There’s something missing, probably another striker perhaps?

1st February 2020 at 5:39 pm #67199Mak, I’ve never disputed Frank wouldn’t have been disappointed we couldn’t strengthen as I said in my first response to you “I’m sure he’s disappointed we couldn’t get anyone in we really wanted.”
Most Chelsea fans will tell you that three of the key areas that need improving are left back, creative midfield and another striker I didn’t see anyone move in January that would help us improve in those areas bar perhaps Fernandes and Eriksen who were never obtainable for Chelsea and I’m not sure where we could have turned in January to improve those areas look who United signed as a striker.
Chllwell was an obvious one and I would be surprised if we didn’t ask about him but either Leicester wouldn’t let him go understandably so or they wanted silly money.
This Summer will be a big one for Chelsea we have to add to the obvious quality we have in the team/squad to develop further. Here hoping. Cheers 9’s

1st February 2020 at 5:50 pm #67200AnonymousAgain, I don’t see what other teams transfers really have to say about what chelsea might have been able to do, besides also bid for these players. It’s an indication of availability but that’s where it ends. Anyway we’ve both made our points on it.
I’ve not read anything here that changes my mind that Chelsea should have made something happen in the market this winter. I clearly haven’t convinced you of anything either, so we can just leave it there and twiddle our thumbs for 2 weeks (argh)!! 😛

1st February 2020 at 6:06 pm #67202Frank probably wanted to strengthen the team, however he didn’t, that would lead to the conclusion that the right player wasn’t available at the right price. The only way Chelsea could make something happen was to buy a player the didn’t really want, or pay way over the odds for one they did…..Pagan
